THE HISTORY OF ARABIC SCIENCES: A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY Mohamed ABATTOUY Fez University Max Planck Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte, Berlin A first version of this bibliography was presented to the Group Frühe Neuzeit (Max Planck Institute for History of Science, Berlin) in April 1996. I revised and expanded it during a stay of research in MPIWG during the summer 1996 and in Fez (november 1996). During the Workshop Experience and Knowledge Structures in Arabic and Latin Sciences, held in the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin on December 16-17, 1996, a limited number of copies of the present Bibliography was already distributed. Finally, I express my gratitude to Paul Weinig (Berlin) for valuable advice and for proofreading. PREFACE The principal sources for the history of Arabic and Islamic sciences are of course original works written mainly in Arabic between the VIIIth and the XVIth centuries, for the most part. A great part of this scientific material is still in original manuscripts, but many texts had been edited since the XIXth century, and in many cases translated to European languages. In the case of sciences as astronomy and mechanics, instruments and mechanical devices still extant and preserved in museums throughout the world bring important informations. A total of several thousands of mathematical, astronomical, physical, alchemical, biologico-medical manuscripts survived. They are written mainly in Arabic, but some are in Persian and Turkish. The main libraries in which they are preserved are those in the Arabic World: Cairo, Damascus, Tunis, Algiers, Rabat ... as well as in private collections. Beside this material in the Arabic countries, the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, the Biblioteca del Escorial near Madrid, the British Museum and the Bodleian Library in England, the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the Süleymaniye and Topkapi Libraries in Istanbul, the National Libraries in Iran, India, Pakistan.. -

Al-Kindi, a Ninth-Century Physician, Philosopher, And
AL-KINDI, A NINTH-CENTURY PHYSICIAN, PHILOSOPHER, AND SCHOLAR by SAMI HAMARNEH FROM 9-12 December, I962, the Ministry of Guidance in Iraq celebrated the thousandth anniversary of one of the greatest intellectual figures of ninth century Baghdad, Abui Yuisuf Ya'qiib ibn Ishaq al-Kind? (Latin Alkindus).1 However, in the aftermath ofthis commendable effort, no adequate coverage of al-Kindl as a physician-philosopher ofardent scholarship has, to my knowledge, been undertaken. This paper, therefore, is intended to shed light on his intel- lectual contributions within the framework of the environment and time in which he lived. My proposals and conclusions are mainly based upon a study of al-Kindi's extant scientific and philosophical writings, and on scattered information in the literature of the period. These historical records reveal that al-Kindi was the only man in medieval Islam to be called 'the philosopher of the Arabs'.2 This honorary title was apparently conferred upon him as early as the tenth century if not during his lifetime in the ninth. He lived in the Abbasids' capital during a time of high achievement. As one of the rare intellectual geniuses of the century, he con- tributed substantially to this great literary, philosophic, and scientific activity, which included all the then known branches of human knowledge. Very little is known for certain about the personal life of al-Kind?. Several references in the literary legacy ofIslam, however, have assisted in the attempt to speculate intelligently about the man. Most historians of the period confirm the fact that al-Kindl was of pure Arab stock and a rightful descendant of Kindah (or Kindat al-Muliuk), originally a royal south-Arabian tribe3. -

Atheer Awwad Jamal Abd Al-Fattah Al-Jumaili, Descriptions of the Considered Reason by the Fundamentalists-Palarch’s Journal Of Archaeology Of Egypt/Egyptology 17(6), ISSN 1567-214x Abstract The study aimed to explain the importance of the reason on which the Islamic laws aremeasuredand how are the descriptions considered. Also, showing the importance of knowledge to the responsible person who performs the duties in Islamabout these descriptions. The descriptions were mentioned through the fundamentalists without detailing them for each section. Thus, I extrapolated the mention of these descriptions, count them, and mention the considered descriptions without the canceled because the invalid is the one that I did not mention in the subject matter, and to clarify the topic and detail its merits, I studied the subject thoroughly and extensively and it is well-known to the fundamentalists.The difference in its parts and divisions, and I showed in my research the most important issues related to the cause and its descriptions. I also presented the combined and the different and also the differentiated rulings and issues in the jurisprudential branches in applications for the various issues mentioned in my topic. Keywords: the reason, significant descriptions of the reason. Introduction: The science of Usul al-Fiqh is a genuine science.It is the refuge when editing issues, and determining evidence in most rulings. Its rules are based on the revealed truth, and many of them are handed over to the beholders. -

Britton Co-Chairperson: Dr. Gail Buttorff Date Approved: 31 May 2018 iii Abstract This dissertation aims to understand why protests lessen when they do by investigating how and why social movements demobilize. I do this by questioning the causal link between consistent state polices (concessions or repression) and social movement demobilization. My interviews with the February 20 Movement, the main organizer of mass protests in Morocco during the Arab Spring, reveals how ideological differences between leftist and Islamist participants led to the group’s eventual halt of protests. During my fieldwork, I conducted 46 semi-structured elite interviews with civil society activists, political party leaders, MPs, and independent activists throughout Morocco. My interviews demonstrate that the February 20 Movement was initially united, but that this incrementally changed following the King’s mixed-policy of concessions and repression. The King’s concessionary policies convinced society that demands were being met and therefore led to the perception that the February 20 Movement was no longer needed, while repression highlighted internal divides. -

Which Party Has More Sense, Pope Benedict XVI? By Dr. Hani Siba’i * [email protected] Director of the al-Maqreze Centre for Historical Studies The Head of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI (his real name is Joseph Ratzinger), has given a lecture entitled “The Relationship between the Mind and Violence in Islam and Christianity.” The Pope has quoted the following sentences: “A short while ago, it came to my mind a conversation, published by Professor Theodore Khory, from University of Munster, which was held between the Roman Emperor Manuel II Paleologus and a “learned Persian” Muslim on “Christianity and Islam, and the truth of both”. This meeting took place in 1391 near Ankara, during the Emperor’s stay in his winter residence. IT seems that this Emperor has recorded this conversation during the siege of Constantinople between 1394 and 1402, because his argument was more comprehensive than his Persian counterpart. Pope Benedict XVI then quoted some statement, mentioned by Professor Khory about Jihad in Islam and its relation with violence: “In the seventh dialogue, as reported by Professor Khory, the Emperor talked about the issue of Jihad, the Holy War. It is certain that the Emperor was aware that the Verse 256 of Surat al-Baqarah says: There is no compulsion in religion. It is one of the first Suras to be revealed in the Qur’an as scholars stated, and it referred to the period when Muhammad had no power and was subjected to constant threat. But it is also certain that the Emperor was aware of what happened, in the subsequent period, in the Qur’an about the Holy War.” So we can deduce that the Qur’an states There is no compulsion in religion 1 when the Prophet was weak in Makkah, that is when he was using Taqiyyah (concealment of one’s belief to escape persecution), according to Professor Khory, the Emperor and Pope Benedict XVI. -
