An Incipitarium of Funeral Orations and a Smattering of Other Panegyrical Literature from the Italian Renaissance (Ca An Incipitarium of Funeral Orations and a Smattering of Other Panegyrical Literature from the Italian Renaissance (ca. 1350-1550) BY JOHN M. MCMANAMON, S.J. CONTENTS 1. Orations with Incipits 2. Orations needing an Incipit 1 Introduction The Incipitarium below primarily derives from a reading of Paul Oskar Kristeller’s Iter Italicum for manuscripts and the various printed catalogues for incunabula and early printed editions. I began collecting this data years ago for a book on Italian Renaissance funeral oratory, and I wish to use the internet to share the data with scholars and all interested persons, especially those who may be considering critical editions of a given oration. Years ago, in a review of my Funeral Oratory, Dr. Hermann Goldbrunner suggested that its appendix would have been more valuable, had I supplied the incipits for the orations. He was quite justified in that observation, and I would like now to supply the incipits that I have determined and the manuscripts that conserve each oration. My hope is that the posting of this list will encourage other scholars to contribute relevant data. If any scholar would like to send me information, I will update the listing regularly and acknowledge all contributions therein. I have focused my energies on determining the incipit of each oration and the manuscripts conserving the oration. Other data are supplied less systematically (dates of birth and death for author and subject, bibliography on an oration). For example, given the organization of Kristeller’s massive catalogue by library and fondo, I have not included the Iter references because they are easily located in the printed or CD editions of his work. I have tried to include cross-references to the splendid volumes edited by Ludwig Bertalot and Ursula Jaitner-Hahner, Initia humanistica Latina. In a final checking of the data, I have used the Google search engine. Nonetheless, I am sure that mistakes remain, and I apologize for those. Each entry has eight categories: (1) author (generally with variant forms of the name); (2) subject (with variant forms); (3) title; (4) place of delivery; (5) date of delivery; (6) manuscripts (alphabetically by library and fondo); (7) printed editions; (8) cataloguing and bibliography. This listing intersects with other excellent work by scholars. For the earlier funeral sermons and orations, one should consult Rudolf Schneyer’s Repertorium and David D’Avray’s fine scholarship. For the later period and areas outside of Italy, one should consult the exhaustive work of Rudolf Lenz and his team of scholars who have catalogued and studied Leichenpredigten. There are an ever growing number of bibliographical works on more specialized topics published in print or on-line, exemplified by the superb register of Constance sermons edited by Chris Nighman and Philip Stump. • Augustine and the Art of Ruling in the Carolingian Imperial Period
Augustine and the Art of Ruling in the Carolingian Imperial Period This volume is an investigation of how Augustine was received in the Carolingian period, and the elements of his thought which had an impact on Carolingian ideas of ‘state’, rulership and ethics. It focuses on Alcuin of York and Hincmar of Rheims, authors and political advisers to Charlemagne and to Charles the Bald, respectively. It examines how they used Augustinian political thought and ethics, as manifested in the De civitate Dei, to give more weight to their advice. A comparative approach sheds light on the differences between Charlemagne’s reign and that of his grandson. It scrutinizes Alcuin’s and Hincmar’s discussions of empire, rulership and the moral conduct of political agents during which both drew on the De civitate Dei, although each came away with a different understanding. By means of a philological–historical approach, the book offers a deeper reading and treats the Latin texts as political discourses defined by content and language. Sophia Moesch is currently an SNSF-funded postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford, working on a project entitled ‘Developing Principles of Good Govern- ance: Latin and Greek Political Advice during the Carolingian and Macedonian Reforms’. She completed her PhD in History at King’s College London. Burton’s words invoke the gallery of maps Pope Alexander VII assembled in Castel Gandolfo outside Rome in 1665 and animate Sutton Nicholls’s ink-and-wash drawing of Samuel Pepys’s library in London in 1693 (Fig. 1).2 There, in a room lined with bookcases and portraits, a map stands out, mounted on canvas and sus- pended from two cords; it is Giovanni Battista Falda’s view of Rome, published in 1676.

ASSAULTS ON THE FAITH: IMAGINING JEWS AND CREATING CHRISTIANS IN THE LATE MIDDLE AGES By BROOKE FALK A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Art History Written under the direction of Dr. Laura Weigert And approved by New Brunswick, New Jersey January, 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Assaults on the Faith: Imagining Jews and Creating Christians in the Late Middle Ages By BROOKE FALK Dissertation Director: Laura Weigert My dissertation examines manuscripts and early printed books of the “Fortress of Faith” (Fortalitium fidei) as influential works in late medieval constructions of Jewish and Christian identity. I argue that the “Fortress of Faith” moves beyond traditional polemics in its comprehensive use of popular argumentative approaches, particularly in its use of images, which appealed to a variety of late medieval audiences. I suggest a revised stemma, giving preference to the influence of woodcuts over miniatures. Through both types of images, Christians were armed with mental pictures of themselves as knights guarding a Christian fortress. The first two chapters study surviving manuscripts and incunabula of the text with regard to their material execution, visual imagery, verbal content, and regional production and dissemination. The presentation of the text evolved with its shifting audience from the time it was composed around 1460 by a Castilian Franciscan friar to the time it was translated into French and illuminated around 1480 and also while it was printed numerous times between 1471 and 1525.

  • Equestrian Monument to Bartolomeo Colleoni, 19Th Century
anticSwiss 30/09/2021 08:14:52 http://www.anticswiss.com Equestrian monument to Bartolomeo Colleoni, 19th century FOR SALE ANTIQUE DEALER Period: 19° secolo - 1800 Ars Antiqua srl Milano Style: Altri stili +39 02 29529057 393664680856 Height:28cm Material:Bronzo Price:1200€ DETAILED DESCRIPTION: 19th century Equestrian monument to Bartolomeo Colleoni Dark patina bronze with marble base, cm alt 28 The work in question is a reproduction of the famous equestrian monument executed by Andrea del Verrocchio for Campo San Zanipolo in Venice between 1480 and 1488. It represents the leader Bartolomeo Colleoni (1395 / 1400-1475), one of the most enterprising captains of fortune of the Republic of Venice of the fifteenth century. He plays the classic bold and daring leader, full of charm and pride. He was at the service of the Serenissima and of Filippo Maria Visconti. The equestrian statue theme has been particularly prevalent in Western sculpture since Greek art. From the Roman imperial age this subject took on a heroic but also propaganda function that will characterize it until the twentieth century. More or less famous leaders were portrayed in this capacity; famous are the examples of Marcus Aurelius, Napoleon and Garibaldi, numerous are the works of this kind that adorn the main Italian and foreign squares. The realization of an equestrian monument, by one of the greatest artists of the fifteenth century, for the leader Bartolomeo Colleoni, who died a few years earlier, was decreed by the Republic of Venice in 1479. The following year the execution was entrusted to the Florentine Andrea Verrocchio (Florence, 1437 - Venice, 1488), however he disappeared before the work was finished.
