Embraer 18Q3.indd 10-11 8/5/18 9:17 PM EMBRAER AND BOEING EMBRAER AND BOEING SOARING INTO A STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

On July 5, Embraer and Boeing signed a Memorandum of HURRICANE Understanding to establish a strategic partnership that positions both companies to accelerate their growth in global aerospace markets. The strategic partnership will bring together more than 150 years of combined leadership in aerospace and leverage the two SEASON companies’ highly complementary commercial product lines. The partnership is a natural evolution in the 20-year history of collaboration between Boeing and Embraer. This is exciting for Embraer, and it is especially good news for our Executive Jets business unit. While Embraer will continue to own 100% of the business jet entity, the added financial strength bolsters sales potential, production efficiency, operational excellence, investments in new programs and exports, creating jobs, income and sustainability. This will serve to add even more value to customers, shareholders and employees. This strategic partnership is an exciting moment in the histo- ry of Embraer: our future is now even brighter. Boeing and Em- braer will benefit from a broader scale, resources and footprint, including global supply chain, sales and marketing, and services network, which will enable us to capture benefits from best-in- class efficiencies across the organizations. Boeing and the new commercial joint venture would be positioned to offer a comprehensive, highly complementary commercial airplane portfolio that ranges from 70 seats to more than 450 seats and freighters, offering best-in-class products and services to better serve the global customer base. Completion of the deal still requires time – estimated between 12 and 18 months – and a considerable amount of effort from the working groups. Until then, business will continue as usual. Our services and support to our customers will remain at its market-leading high standards. And we will maintain our focus on continuously elevating our customers’ experience and pro- viding them with the utmost value. As more public information becomes available we will certainly keep you informed. Embraer 18Q3.indd 22-23 8/5/18 9:17 PM MEET THE MEMBER

What airplane(s) do you currently fly and how many hours do you have? I fly a 2010 Phenom 300 S/N 018; I believe it was the 4th or 5th airplane delivered into the US when I bought it new, and I have close to 1,700 hours in it.

What are your favorite vacation spots? I love going to Charleston, SC and Turks and Caicos.

MEET THE MEMBER What are your procedures for getting around foreign coun- tries? It depends where; not all countries are the same. Flying to the GUILHERME SCHMIDT Caribbean is very easy and it does not demand a whole lot more planning than flying domestically. Just call the FBO to check ramp fees, transportation arrangement and fuel and file APIS and calling US customs to advise them. Flying to Europe is fairly straightfor- ward too. I always take another pilot when going to Europe or other longer overseas trips. But Europe in the winter demands more plan- ning on the crossing, to make sure weather alternates are viable, no wet footprint on the flight plan, and slots coordinating in Europe. Flying to South America is the most complicated, as overflight approvals are required, and there can be a fairly bureaucratic entry process. A handler is necessary. I have also flown the Phenom to Asia and it was easier than expected. I use Air Journey when I need help on trip coordination and they do an outstanding job. Interna- tional flying is easier than most people think if you take the time to do proper planning. It is very rewarding and fun, and make one appreciate the wonderful ATC system and freedom of flying we have in the US.

Favorite flying experience? There are too many to list. After 30 years of flying you accumu- late a bunch of favorites flights.

What drew you to flying? Hard to say, I always liked airplanes so it just seemed natural.

What is your career background? My background is in the Financial Markets, I am a bond and currency trader. How many total hours do you currently have? About 4,700 hours.

What is the first plane you ever flew? An Embraer Cherokee. That is correct! In the 70s, Embraer used to assemble airplanes in Brazil under the Piper License.

What is the first plane you ever owned? Socata Trinidad TB-20, from that I moved to a TBM-850 and to the Phenom 300.

Do you have any recommendations for pilots out there? The airlines have the best safety record. Our job is to minimize the risk of our flights to our passengers, so if we can emulate the decision making process to that of the airline industry, we will be safer. Identify where the accidents vulnerability points are in your operations, and be most vigilant about them. C

The FANS structure entails upgrades to air communication, surveillance, and navigation systems. Currently, communica- tion on intercontinental flights involves voice transmission on HF (high frequency) radios. Flight crews have to make position By GABRIEL JOHNSON reports because surveillance radar control is non-existent on oceanic routes, and Inertial Navigation System (INS) provides positional information for navigation. While the current way of doing things works, most pilots will readily admit that it is not without flaws. For instance, the voice quality of HF radio com- munication is often poor, leading to garbled transmissions that have to be repeated. Position reports depend on the pilot’s un- failing transmitting reports at every compulsory reporting way- point, and this is not without human error. Navigation by INS is also replete with drawbacks such as drift (limitation associated with imperfections within gyro bearings and mass imbalances, which can cause error rates of 0.6nm/hr.) and scheduler loop (a reaction to gravity that increases sensed linear accelerations). However, with FANS, voice communication is replaced by CP- DLC (Controller/Pilot Data Link Communication), which is digital communication that enables the pilot and ATC to communicate n 2014, the IATA (International Air Transport directly using predefined text messages for clearances, requests, FANS and routine messages. cient route changes, satellite communication, more direct-rout- ing (resulting in fuel savings), and reduced user charges for using FANS infrastructure. Strict compliance with state requirements is a must when using this exemption. • Corporate Transactions. In a number of states there are exemptions for bulk sales of property as part of the sale of an on-going trade or business, statutory mergers, div- idends to shareholders, tax-free contributions of property to partnerships or corporations, and other similar trans- actions. In some cases, it may be possible to structure transactions pursuant to these exemptions and thereby effectively limit the applicability of sales/use taxes. The sales and use tax law applicable to aircraft is exceed- ingly complex, and is often not uniformly clear. As the states’ tax appetites continue to grow, they appear to be increasingly aggressive, even in areas previously thought to be exempt from tax. Purchasers are therefore cautioned to carefully plan their transactions and be cognizant of potential risks. Most business aircraft are eligible for use tax exemption or reduc- tion in some form in most, but not all, states. Through proper planning, structuring, and filing, you can avoid a surprise use tax bill and use those funds to keep your business aircraft in the skies. C

Some states, such as California and Maryland, have defined testing periods after which the aircraft is deemed exempt- oth- ers do not. C
