The situation of Chinese hypogean fishes is of course remarkable. There are so many species, most described only recently, and much of that literature as yet unknown to those of us who cannot read the Chinese language. Those fishes clearly deserve as much attention as this publication can bring to them. We also invited as many Chinese colleagues as possible as external reviewers of manuscripts, to include their evaluations, opinions and perspectives. It is as important to have reviewers and editors, as it is to have authors. So is the answer, China? There is perhaps an inevitable sense of paternalism that those of us with a scientific history of a few hundred years, and a peculiar western European linguist heritage should in any sense “discover” China or Chinese science. Of course we only discover it for ourselves, and those who share our particular circumstances. The monumental series by Joseph Needham (e.g., Bray 1986) docu- ments much of that history. This most recent contact will benefit us all, and the expanded opportunities we can realize will enrich our science and our societies. Other western scientists have reported on fishes in China, a notable example being John Treadwell Nichols (1943). However, their tone has often been one of “discovery” of the fishes and not much about the fish biologists or their science. Western science “discovered” Chinese fishes only in the Linnaean sense. Among them, there are a great number of endemic and precious group, and a lot of monotypic genera and species. Recently, owing to the synthetic effects of the natural and human-beings, many of these fishes gradually became endangered. The preliminary statistic result indicates that 92 species are endangered fishes and account for 10% of the total freshwater fishes in China. For the purpose of protection of the biodiversity of fishes, it is necessary to analyse these causes which have led the fishes to become endangered. This report could be used as a scientific reference for researching and saving the endemic precious freshwater fishes in China. Reference genomes are essential for studying population genetics, domestic farming, and genetic resource protection. However, currently, no reference genome is available for Trachidermus fasciatus, and this has greatly hindered the research on this species. In this study, we integrated nanopore long-read sequencing, Illumina short-read sequencing, and Hi-C methods to thoroughly assemble the Trachidermus fasciatus genome.

(2006): “Puntius snyderi is a freshwater cyprinid fish discovered by Oshima when he collected the freshwater fishes in Taiwan in 1915-1917. It was mainly distributed in northern and central Taiwan [Oshima 1919] […].” From Chang et al. (2009): “A similar inference was also proposed for Puntius snyderi and P. semifasciolatus in which P. snyderi is a species endemic to Taiwan and P. semifasciolatus is distributed in both China and Taiwan (Chang et al. 2006). These 2 species were proposed to have differentiated in China. After P. snyderi and P. semifasciolatus dispersed to Taiwan, P. snyderi became extinct in China (Chang et al. 2006).” 1 Chen et al. There are marked differences in the coloration of either juveniles or adults, and in sexual dimorphism, between A. h. hemispinus and A. h. cinctus. Multivariate analysis of morphometric data too, shows the two taxa to be distinguishable from each other. Differences in body coloration and morphometric characters coincide with those of the mouthpart structure and the coiling pattern of the intestine in A. h. hemispinus and A. h. cinctus. Morphological distinction, coupled with different habitat and food preferences, supports the taxonomic elevation of the two hitherto subspecific populations of A. hemispinus to species. Reçu le 19 novembre 1993 Received 19 November, 1993 Accepté le 24 octobre 1994 Accepted 24 October, 1994 RÉSUMÉ Le modèle d'évolution caryologique des Cyprinidés, selon lequel le nombre polyploïde 2n=100 doit être considéré comme plésiomorphe pour la famille, en opposition à la théorie orthodoxe, semble se vérifier par la publication récente de nouvelles données concernant les nombres chromosomiques de Cyprininés d'Afrique et d'Asie du sud. L'hypothèse d'un ancêtre de type Cyprininé, appartenant probablement à une lignée proche des Barbinés, ainsi que l'existence d'une polyploïdie fonctionnant comme un «système-ouvert» est suggérée sur la base de caractères caryoévolutifs. L'importance de ce phénomène dans le processus évolutif de quelques lignées justifie un appel à l'inclusion future de l'information caryologique dans les travaux de systématique évolutive. En effet, les progrès actuels en cytogénétique moléculaire, en rendant possible la reconnaissance d'homologies chromosomiques interspécifiques, permettront probablement de clarifier les relations phylogénétiques au sein même des Cypriniformes. Beadle Award honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions T to the community of genetics researchers and who exemplify the qualities of its namesake as a respected academic, administrator, and public servant. The 2015 recipient is John Postlethwait. He has made groundbreaking contributions in developing the zebrafish as a molecular genetic model and in understanding the evolution of new gene functions in vertebrates. He built the first zebrafish genetic map and showed that its genome, along with that of distantly related teleost fish, had been duplicated. Postlethwait played an integral role in the zebrafish genome-sequencing project and elucidated the genomic organization of several fish species. Postlethwait is also honored for his active involvement with the zebrafish community, advocacy for zebrafish as a model system, and commitment to driving the field forward. Genetics blossomed as a science spurred by wise selections important genetic variants that can shed light on the mech- of compliant organisms.
