The status of the endangered freshwater fishes in China and The analysis of the endangered causes HE Shunping, CIIEN Yiyu Institute of Hydrobiology, CAS, Wuhan, ITubei Province, 430072 Abstract More than 800 species of freshwater fishes are precious biological resources in inland water system of China. Among them, there are a great number of endemic and precious group, and a lot of monotypic genera and species. Recently, owing to the synthetic effects of the natural and human-beings, many of these fishes gradually became endangered. The preliminary statistic result indicates that 92 species are endangered fishes and account for 10% of the total freshwater fishes in China. For the purpose of protection of the biodiversity of fishes, it is necessary to analyse these causes which have led the fishes to become endangered. This report could be used as a scientific reference for researching and saving the endemic precious freshwater fishes in China. Key words Endangered freshwater fishes, Endangered causes, China In the process of the evolution of living things, along with the origin of life, the extinction of life also existed. In the long_ life history, the speciation and the extinction of living things often keep a relative balance. As time goes on, especially after by the impact of human beings activity of production and life, the pattern of the biodiversity were changed or damaged, more or less. At last, in the modern society, human beings activity not only accelerate the progress of society and the development of economy, but also, as a special species, become the source of disturbing_ to other species. -

(2006): “Puntius snyderi is a freshwater cyprinid fish discovered by Oshima when he collected the freshwater fishes in Taiwan in 1915-1917. It was mainly distributed in northern and central Taiwan [Oshima 1919] […].” From Chang et al. (2009): “A similar inference was also proposed for Puntius snyderi and P. semifasciolatus in which P. snyderi is a species endemic to Taiwan and P. semifasciolatus is distributed in both China and Taiwan (Chang et al. 2006). These 2 species were proposed to have differentiated in China. After P. snyderi and P. semifasciolatus dispersed to Taiwan, P. snyderi became extinct in China (Chang et al. 2006).” 1 Chen et al. (2013) list Puntius snyderi as previously present on Kinmen Island, Taiwan but that it is currently locally extinct there. Status in the United States No records of Puntius snyderi in the wild or in trade in the United States were found. There are marked differences in the coloration of either juveniles or adults, and in sexual dimorphism, between A. h. hemispinus and A. h. cinctus. Multivariate analysis of morphometric data too, shows the two taxa to be distinguishable from each other. Differences in body coloration and morphometric characters coincide with those of the mouthpart structure and the coiling pattern of the intestine in A. h. hemispinus and A. h. cinctus. Morphological distinction, coupled with different habitat and food preferences, supports the taxonomic elevation of the two hitherto subspecific populations of A. hemispinus to species. Armbruster1 Abstract Background: Cypriniformes (minnows, carps, loaches, and suckers) is the largest group of freshwater fishes in the world (~4300 described species). Despite much attention, previous attempts to elucidate relationships using molecular and morphological characters have been incongruent. In this study we present the first phylogenomic analysis using anchored hybrid enrichment for 172 taxa to represent the order (plus three out-group taxa), which is the largest dataset for the order to date (219 loci, 315,288 bp, average locus length of 1011 bp). Results: Concatenation analysis establishes a robust tree with 97 % of nodes at 100 % bootstrap support. Species tree analysis was highly congruent with the concatenation analysis with only two major differences: monophyly of Cobitoidei and placement of Danionidae. Conclusions: Most major clades obtained in prior molecular studies were validated as monophyletic, and we provide robust resolution for the relationships among these clades for the first time. These relationships can be used as a framework for addressing a variety of evolutionary questions (e.g. phylogeography, polyploidization, diversification, trait evolution, comparative genomics) for which Cypriniformes is ideally suited. Relationships among these lineages and the enigmatic taxa Rhodeus were not well-resolved. Tests of mono- phyly of subfamilies and previously proposed relationships were examined by constraining cytochrome b sequences data to fit previous hypotheses. The analysis of constrained trees indicated that sequence data were not consistent with most previously proposed relationships. Inconsistency was largely attributable to Asian taxa, such as Xenocypris and Xenocyprioides. Improved understanding of historical and taxonomic relationships in Cyprinidae will require further morphological and molecular studies on Asian cyprinids and taxa representative of the diversity found in Africa. 2002 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles. On the basis of counts of branched rays in the dorsal fin and number of scales in the lateral line, the shape of the mouth opening and of the dorsal fin, three species are regarded as valid in this group: Cyprinion macrostomus HECKEL, C. kais HECKEL, and C. tenuiradius HECKEL. Zusammenfassung Syntypenserien und anderes Material von fünf Arten der Cyprinion macrostomus-Gruppe sind untersucht worden. Auf der Basis der Anzahl der Gabelstrahlen in der Dorsalflosse und der Zahl der Schuppen in der Seitenlinie sowie der Maulform und Ausbildung der Dorsalflosse werden drei Arten in dieser Gruppe aner- kannt: Cyprinion macrostomus HECKEL, C. kais HECKEL und C. tenuiradius HECKEL. Für jede dieser Arten wird ein Lectotypus festgelegt. THE KARYOLOGY AND TAXONOMY OF THE SOUTHERN AFRICAN YELLOWFISH (PISCES: CYPRINIDAE) THESIS Submitted in Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE of Rhodes University by LAWRENCE KEITH OELLERMANN December, 1988 ABSTRACT The southern African yellowfish (Barbus aeneus, ~ capensls, .!L. kimberleyensis, .!L. natalensis and ~ polylepis) are very similar, which limits the utility of traditional taxonomic methods. For this reason yellowfish similarities were explored using multivariate analysis and karyology. Meristic, morphometric and Truss (body shape) data were examined using multiple discriminant, principal component and cluster analyses. The morphological study disclosed that although the species were very similar two distinct groups occurred; .!L. aeneus-~ kimberleyensis and ~ capensis-~ polylepis-~ natalensis. Karyology showed that the yellowfish were hexaploid, ~ aeneus and IL... kimberleyensis having 148 chromosomes while the other three species had 150 chromosomes. Because the karyotypes of the species were variable the fundamental number for each species was taken as the median value for ten spreads. Median fundamental numbers were ~ aeneus ; 196, .!L. natalensis ; 200, ~ kimberleyensis ; 204, ~ polylepis ; 206 and ~ capensis ; 208. The lower chromosome number and higher fundamental number was considered the more apomorphic state for these species. Silver-staining of nucleoli showed that the yellowfish are probably undergoing the process of diploidization. Southern African Barbus and closely related species used for outgroup comparisons showed three levels of ploidy. The diploid species karyotyped were ~ anoplus (2N;48), IL... argenteus (2N;52), ~ trimaculatus (2N;42- 48), Labeo capensis (2N;48) and k umbratus (2N;48); the tetraploid species were B . serra (2N;102), ~ trevelyani (2N;±96), Pseudobarbus ~ (2N;96) and ~ burgi (2N;96); and the hexaploid species were ~ marequensis (2N;130-150) and Varicorhinus nelspruitensis (2N;130-148). -

BACKGROUND The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) assists the government of India through the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPC) since 1990. NHPC is responsible for the construction and management of the Uri Hydropower Project in Kashmir. The National Board of Fisheries has an assignment to prepare and conduct a programme for aquatic Environmental Impact Assessment (ElA) of the Uri Hydropower Project in Kashmir, India. The overall objective is to make a final analysis of the impact on the aquatic fauna and to evaluate the impacts of the Uri Project on the aquatic ecosystem, with particular reference to fish and bottom fauna. The immediate objectives are to implement fish and bottom fauna surveys and fish collection and classification investigations, before and after the construction of the Uri hydropower plant. The studies started in 1990 and are expected to be concluded in 1998. Within the Board, the Institute of Freshwater Research (IFR) and SWEDMAR, the Board's international consultancy group, are responsible for the coordination, planning, implementation and administration of the programme.
