Augustus II the Strong’s Porcelain Collection at the Japanisches Palais zu Dresden: A Visual Demonstration of Power and Splendor Zifeng Zhao Department of Art History & Communication Studies McGill University, Montreal September 2018 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts © Zifeng Zhao 2018 i Abstract In this thesis, I examine Augustus II the Strong’s porcelain collection in the Japanisches Palais, an 18th-century Dresden palace that housed porcelains collected from China and Japan together with works made in his own Meissen manufactory. I argue that the ruler intended to create a social and ceremonial space in the chinoiserie style palace, where he used a systematic arrangement of the porcelains to demonstrate his kingly power as the new ruler of Saxony and Poland. I claim that such arrangement, through which porcelains were organized according to their colors and styles, provided Augustus II’s guests with a designated ceremonial experience that played a significant role in the demonstration of the King’s political and financial prowess. By applying Gérard de Lairesse’s color theory and Samuel Wittwer’s theory of “the phenomenon of sheen” to my analysis of the arrangement, I examine the ceremonial functions of such experience. In doing so, I explore the three unique features of porcelain’s materiality—two- layeredness, translucency and sheen. To conclude, I argue that the secrecy of the technology of porcelain’s production was the key factor that enabled Augustus II’s demonstration of power. Cet article a été rédigé dans le cadre d’une thèse de doctorat visant à analyser l’invention, les migrations et remaniements des légendes de fondation et des légendes étiologiques – c’est-à-dire des légendes explicatives – depuis leur première mise par écrit au Moyen Âge ou à l’époque moderne jusqu’aux opérations de collecte du XIXe siècle. -

Visit to Stanford University Martin Pasi and I met in Palo Alto, California, on 12 March 1999 to visit organist-scholar Robert Bates, then university organist at Stanford University, and to examine the famous dual-temperament organ by C. B. Fisk from 1984 (Fisk Opus 85) in the university’s Memorial Church. Professor Bates proved to be an invaluable resource throughout our project, having both first-hand experience in playing, explaining and composing for the dual-temperament organ at Stanford and a thorough knowledge of the historical, mathematical and musical dimensions of keyboard temperaments. His early questions and suggestions were important guides to honing an initially amorphous concept. A first-hand encounter with Fisk Opus 85 likewise gave concrete testimony that such a concept could be coherently realized. The assurance we experienced at Stanford had followed momentary panic resulting from a telephone conversation between Martin Pasi and Robert Bates on 8 March 1999.43 Bates had suggested that a dual-temperament scheme in a context such as ours would need to go further in distinguishing between the two temperaments than does Fisk Opus 85 with its fifth-comma meantone and unique Vogel-Fisk well-tempered tunings, resulting from five extra notes per octave. ABOLISHABOLISH COMMEMORATIONCOMMEMORATION CRITIQUEA CRITIQUE TO THE OF DISCOURSE RELATING TO THE BOMBING OF DRESDEN IN 1945 Philipp Klein Frauenkirchen Mania The Frauenkirche, ‘Dresden Cathedral’ And The Reconstruction At the very moment when Germany cast off the last sanction imposed as a result of losing the Second World War, a campaign began in Dresden to rebuild the Frauenkirche [Church of Our Lady]. Germany was on top of the pile again and that was something that had to be underlined. Forty-five years after the end of the war the Frauenkirche, a well-known and visible symbol of German defeat, was to be restored to its prewar state. The idea speaks for itself: no-one wanted to talk about National Socialism and it was best to suppress memories of it. The result is a perfect example of an ‘urban coming to terms with the past’.1 The Frauenkirche was consecrated in 1743 after seventeen years of building according to George Bähr’s concept and plans. It was regarded as a bourgeois building since it was mainly financed by donations from Dresdner middle class. The court was also not averse to the project and lent its support in the form of infusions of cash and planning know-how.2 Despite some mistaken assumptions about the statics – the side walls did not take up the weight of the dome as expected – the sandstone building held and for the next two hundred years it dominated Dresden’s cityscape. That was not to change until the attack by the British and American air forces on the 13 and 14 February 1945.
