It’s only slightly larger than the Napa Valley in California, but it’s been producing wines that were winning international acclaim long before Thomas Jefferson became obsessed with them. What makes Burgundy’s wines so fascinating? Why have there been countless books written and films made about the region? Maybe it’s the history, the fact that the Romans first planted vineyards here two millenea ago, storing their wine in the very cellars we take you inside during the course of the film. Maybe it’s the centuries of painstaking work that the monks invested in trial and error. Hundreds of years of experiments led to them ultimately choos- ing the grape varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which proved to be best-suited for the region’s fickle weather and the best vehicles to express Burgundy’s unique and complex terroir. And then these same monks spent more centuries dividing the region up into a patchwork of named vineyards, each little square producing a distinct flavor profile from the block just next to it from the same varieties. For us, the most fascinating aspect of Burgundy is that it is a place where humble farmers of relatively modest means can make wines that turn the heads of tycoons and aficionados, and how very beauti- ful...and fragile... the culture of these vignerons has become.
