With more than 1,500 years of cultivation, it is hard to argue against the Musique et Vin festival by holding an auction for special bottles donated by winemakers this belief. However, to The Wine Forum, Burgundy is more than just pure, scholarly wine. To us, whom we will be visiting and splitting the proceeds equally between these two worthy causes. Burgundy represents all that we as a group stand for—that is, that fine wine is not a right, but a And what a tour we have lined up! We commence with a Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru tasting privilege. Speaking with the region’s very top winemakers, they resolutely believe they are merely the current custodians of cherished plots, and that their role is to make the best wines possible at the Château du Clos de Vougeot on the final night of the 2014 Musique et Vin Festival. Domaine Roulot
DOMAINE ROULOT Country: France Region: Burgundy Appellation(s): Bourgogne Aligoté, Bourgogne, Monthelie, Auxey Duresses, Meursault Producer: Jean-Marc Roulot Founded: ca 1930 Annual Production: N/A Farming: Organic (since 2000) Website: N/A Guy Roulot, a legendary producer of some of the finest Meursaults, if not some of the world’s finest white wines, took his family’s small production domaine to stardom. Guy’s marriage to Geneviève Coche and his own hard work added more prime parcels to the family’s holdings, which he vinified and bottled separately – a novelty for a domaine which had been distilling, rather than vinifying, their grapes just a generation before. As a result, Domaine Roulot has become the master of the lieu- dit, not to mention the five premier cru parcels they farm in Meursault and Monthelie. Guy’s sudden death in 1982 left the family in transition, as his son, Jean-Marc was in Paris pursuing a career in acting. A series of three winemakers aided in the changeover until 1989, when Jean-Marc was at last ready to take on the direction of the estate. Since then, Jean-Marc’s progress has brought even more notice to a domaine that had already enjoyed such a great reputation. The wines of Domaine Roulot are now among the most sought after wines in all of Burgundy. Jean-Marc has been successful in fine-tuning the domaine’s particular, stand-out style. While Domaine Roulot had once pioneered the single-vineyard bottlings of Meursault, they were now influencing other domaines to follow suit, thereby raising the stakes in this exalted appellation. -
156Th HOSPICES DE BEAUNE WINE AUCTION 20Th
156th HOSPICES DE BEAUNE WINE AUCTION 20 th NOVEMBER 2016 Under the Presidency of Madame Virginie Ledoyen, Madame Khatia Buniatishvili, Madame Valérie Bonneton, Monsieur Claude Lelouche and Monsieur Eddy Mitchell For the benefits of the Foundation Cœur et Recherches and Foundation l’ARC As this press release is being prepared, The Hospices Civils de Beaune are going through a period of great sadness brought about by the sudden disappearance of their director, Mr Antoine JACQUET. Mr JACQUET dedicated 28 years of his professional life to this atypical establishment where he was capable of both managing the evolution and modernisation of the hospital and also its historical and viticultural heritage. The wine domain, the historic museum and the hospital activities have always been in great interaction. Successive earnings from the wine auctions have allowed the Hospices Civils de Beaune to offer themselves modern equipment adapted to each stage of their historical development. The latest work in progress, where Antoine JACQUET was at pains to ensure that all went well, is the restructuring and enlargement of the Hospital Centre. Work on this began in 2014. While the festivities linked to the Wine Auction on 20th November 2016 will be unchanged, everyone present will spare a thought for the man who presided over the destiny of this institution of which he was so proud. Bernadette AUNE 2 THE 2016 BURGUNDY VINTAGE 2016 An Amazing Turnaround Jasper Morris, Master of Wine and Christie’s Wine consultant, offers his first impressions about the 2016 vintage, with Ludivine Griveau, régisseur of the Hospices de Beaune domain. -
France Few Regions Can Claim the Fame and Admiration That Burgundy BURGUNDY Has Enjoyed Since the Second Century
France Few regions can claim the fame and admiration that Burgundy BURGUNDY has enjoyed since the second century. Comprised of the Chablis, Côte d’Or, Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais and Beaujolais regions, Burgundy occupies a long and narrow stretch of vineyards in eastern France. The critical effect of terroir in Burgundy is expressed in its complex classification system. • Vineyards are divided into separate appellations along terroir France boundaries; the full range of classification levels from broadest to the most distinguished follows: District (e.g. Beaujolais or Chablis), Village (e.g. Pommard), Premier Cru (e.g. Pommard les Rugiens) and Grands Cru (e.g. Clos Vougeot). • As a result of Burgundy’s rules of inheritance, vineyard ownership is quite fragmented, with multiple owners for most crus. The Clos de Vougeot vineyard, for example, is split between 80 different owners. • Though soils vary, clay and limestone predominate in the Côte d’Or and granite is common in Beaujolais. “En Côte D'or, Établie Au Coeur Du Village De Saint-Aubin, Notre Famille

MEURSAULT CHARMES 1ER CRU BAHEZRE DE LANLAY THE CHARM OF THE TRUE GREAT MEURSAULT. MINERAL AND INTENSE. TASTING Fine pale colour. The bouquet immediately demonstrates the concentration of this cuvée. Predominantly white fruit in style, with some pears in the mix, this displays the full rounded weight of a classic Meursault Charmes, relieved by a correct balancing acidity. The fragrance of balanced yet ripe chardonnay from a great terroir persist beautifully at the finish. FOOD MATCHING veal steack with wild mushrooms, fillet of sole in white butter sauce, old sheep’s milk cheese.
