156Th HOSPICES DE BEAUNE WINE AUCTION 20Th
156th HOSPICES DE BEAUNE WINE AUCTION 20 th NOVEMBER 2016 Under the Presidency of Madame Virginie Ledoyen, Madame Khatia Buniatishvili, Madame Valérie Bonneton, Monsieur Claude Lelouche and Monsieur Eddy Mitchell For the benefits of the Foundation Cœur et Recherches and Foundation l’ARC As this press release is being prepared, The Hospices Civils de Beaune are going through a period of great sadness brought about by the sudden disappearance of their director, Mr Antoine JACQUET. Mr JACQUET dedicated 28 years of his professional life to this atypical establishment where he was capable of both managing the evolution and modernisation of the hospital and also its historical and viticultural heritage. The wine domain, the historic museum and the hospital activities have always been in great interaction. Successive earnings from the wine auctions have allowed the Hospices Civils de Beaune to offer themselves modern equipment adapted to each stage of their historical development. The latest work in progress, where Antoine JACQUET was at pains to ensure that all went well, is the restructuring and enlargement of the Hospital Centre. Work on this began in 2014. While the festivities linked to the Wine Auction on 20th November 2016 will be unchanged, everyone present will spare a thought for the man who presided over the destiny of this institution of which he was so proud. Bernadette AUNE 2 THE 2016 BURGUNDY VINTAGE 2016 An Amazing Turnaround Jasper Morris, Master of Wine and Christie’s Wine consultant, offers his first impressions about the 2016 vintage, with Ludivine Griveau, régisseur of the Hospices de Beaune domain. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE Wine, Fraud and Expertise THESIS submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS in Social Ecology by Valerie King Thesis Committee: Professor Simon Cole, Chair Assistant Professor Bryan Sykes Professor George Tita 2015 © 2019 Valerie King TABLE OF CONTENTS Page ABSTRACT iv INTRODUCTION 1 I. FINE WINE AND COLLECTOR FRAUD 4 II. WINE, SUBJECTIVITY AND SCIENCE 20 III. WHO IS A WINE FRAUD EXPERT? 23 CONCLUSION 28 REFERENCES 30 ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my committee members, Professor Simon Cole, Assistant Professor Bryan Sykes and Professor George Tita. iii ABSTRACT Wine, Fraud and Expertise By Valerie King Master of Arts in Social Ecology University of California, Irvine, 2019 Professor Simon Cole, Chair While fraud has existed in various forms throughout the history of wine, the establishment of the fine and rare wine market generated increased opportunities and incentives for producing counterfeit wine. In the contemporary fine and rare wine market, wine fraud is a serious concern. The past several decades witnessed significant events of fine wine forgery, including the infamous Jefferson bottles and the more recent large-scale counterfeit operation orchestrated by Rudy Kurniawan. These events prompted and renewed market interest in wine authentication and fraud detection. Expertise in wine is characterized by the relationship between subjective and objective judgments. The development of the wine fraud expert draws attention to the emergence of expertise as an industry response to wine fraud and the relationship between expert judgment and modern science. iv INTRODUCTION In December 1985, at Christie’s of London, a single bottle of 1787 Château Lafitte Bordeaux, was auctioned for $156,000, setting a record for the most expensive bottle of wine ever sold (Wallace 2008). -

150Th Wine Sale of the Hospices De Beaune
150TH WINE SALE OF THE HOSPICES DE BEAUNE 21 NOVEMBER 2010 - The Hospices de Beaune and Christie’s are celebrating the 150th Wine Sale in China. - A new Cuvée : Santenay «Cuvée Christine Friedberg» - A famous Cuvée changes its name in honor of the King Louis XIV : « Cuvée du Roi Soleil » FROM BEAUNE TO BEIJIN China at the heart of the 150th Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction Two parts of the world each with a great history meet again: China and France, and in particular the renowned wine region Burgundy. This time, our two cultures are to meet thanks to a heritage which is becoming more and more universal: wine. At the heart of Burgundy, Beaune is the Capital City of wine, and the Hospices de Beaune Domaine stands as its incomparable and irreplaceable emblem. Since the 15th Century, Beaune and Hospices wines have been conveying the very special taste of our land. For the last 150 years, these wines have been reaching the rest of the world thanks to a charity auction. At the same time, we have been fortunate enough to have the chance to sample numerous varieties of the finest Chinese teas - something that our friends in China have for centuries been enjoying. We therefore know that you are sensitive to subtle nuances, and will appreciate the various expressions of our 'Climats', our vineyard plots. I look forward to seeing our worlds coming together more often, where we can rely on our common language, the language of wine. Alain Suguenot, President, Hospices de Beaune MP and Mayor of Beaune TO FOLLOW IN JOSEPH PÉTASSE FOOTSTEPS In 1443, Nicolas Rollin, Chancellor of the Philip le Bon, Duke of Burgundy, built a hospital for the poor in Baune at his own expense. -

N°23 February 2011 the Newsletter Hospices De Beaune Wine Auction Makes History
N°23 February 2011 The newsletter The newsletter “Bourgognes International” is the information bulletin on Burgundy wines, intended for the trade (importers, retailers, wine shops owners, etc.). Issued 5 times per year, it enables you to keep up with the latest news from the Burgundy wines sector, companies, and the Wine Board. In order to help us meet your needs as closely as possible, do not hesitate to send us your comments or suggestions, to the following address: [email protected]. Hospices de Beaune wine auction makes history On 21 November, Burgundy* celebrated the 150th Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction. The entire vineyard enjoyed the most prestigious charity auction in the world. In fitting with the occasion, the event even witnessed the most amazing bidding in its history, beating the record price paid for the special “Pièce des Présidents” wine barrel (see the section ‘Performance of Burgundy Wines in their Markets’). Everyone involved in this internationally renowned event all played their part in its success, from its president, a delighted Fabrice Luchini (famous French actor), to the Burgundy wine merchants who represent the main purchasers, to the organisers: Hospices Civils de Beaune, Christie's, and the Burgundy Wine Board (BIVB), among others. In this upbeat atmosphere, the final increase for all 2010 vintage cuvées put up for sale (643 barrels) was 12.55% for reds and 15.7% for whites. This is a positive sign for the markets, at a time when they are regaining some momentum, as well as a clear vote of confidence in the 2010 vintage, which has been suffering slightly due to comparisons with its 2009 predecessor. -
