At the same time, the Arabs‘ loss of the 1948 War has made the boundaries of Israel become defined by the armistice lines of 1949, rather than by those envisioned by the Partition Plan (See Index for Map).1 This fact was iterated by U.N. Security Council resolution 242, which calls for a complete Israeli withdrawal from the territories it has occupied as a result of the 1967 War with its neighboring Arab states. Under those provisions, UNSC resolution 242 has also marked the future boundaries of a Palestinian state within Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Therefore, the recent application for full U.N. membership of a Palestinian state is built on the provisions of UNSC resolution 242, as well as on those of the Partition Plan, in order to enforce the call for a two-state resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.2 The Middle East Peace Process has been an attempt to resolve that conflict outside the chambers of United Nations, while using the particularity of UNSC resolution 242 as the main framework for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. Giving the United States‘ close ties to the Middle East and its status as the world‘s leading superpower; the Peace Process has been led by the U.S. since the 1991 Madrid Peace Conference ―almost to the exclusion of all other parties.‖3 As highlighted the former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N, Arthur Goldberg, in 2005, ―only the United States could act as an intermediary and…all the parties involved have to accept resolution 242.‖4 However, as scholars as diverse as John Mearsheimer, Noam Chomsky and Steven Walt observe, U.S. approach to the general Israeli-Palestinian conflict has favored Israel almost 100% of the time.5 The U.S. has vetoed more than 35 UNSC resolutions that condemn Israel; it continues to supply Israel with nearly $6 billion/year in direct and indirect military and economic aid; and it has avoided placing any political or economic pressure on Israel during the latter‘s peace negotiations with the Palestinians.6 In The Israeli Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy, Mearsheimer and Walt argue that the Israeli lobby in the U.S. is the main reason behind such U.S. bias. And in the eyes of attentive observers around the world, the influence of the lobby and its allies within the American evangelical Christian community has had the effect of undermining U.S. role as the main facilitator of the Peace Process. 1 Thus, this thesis carefully follows the progress of the Peace Process under the current and last three White House administrations, and it highlights the influence of pro-Israel U.S. interest groups on U.S. role as the main mediator between the Israelis and the Palestinians. This author points out that the end-result of the Peace Process has been to create a Palestinian administrative entity in Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank, rather than a viable and independent Palestinian state. I will try to show that the support of evangelical Christian and Jewish-American U.S. special interest groups of Israeli policies aimed at maintaining such status-quo has undermined U.S. credibility as the main facilitator of the two-state resolution. It has resulted in the Palestinian Authority‘s application for full U.N. membership of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, which has also brought the issue of Palestinian statehood back to the international community to resolve. The slogan of such Palestinian efforts has been: ―Recognize Palestine—a New Path for Peace.‖7 This thesis is meant as a contribution to resolving the puzzle regarding the actual clout of pro-Israel U.S. special interest groups by studying their influence in relation to the Middle East Peace Process. This author builds on his first hand experiences of living in Palestine and the U.S., and analytical tools he has acquired by studying the role of United Nations in the Israeli- Palestinian conflict as well as U.S. history, politics and society. This study combines a qualitative analysis of U.S. official policies toward the Peace Process from 1991-2011, with a quantitative investigation of the Peace Process-related activities of pro-Israel U.S. special interest. The quantitative data is collected from public opinion polls, the Congressional Record, government documents, the reports of the Federal Election Commission, and the monthly publications of the non-partisan Washington Report on Middle East Affairs from 1989-2011. The qualitative data is based on experts‘ and scholarly reflections about the Peace Process and the influence of special interest groups on the making of U.S. foreign policy. Special attention is given to the influence of those groups over the presidential elections of the current and last three U.S. administrations; the Peace Process-related congressional resolutions and legislations that they have helped enact through

And while the Right exaggerates both its depth and scope, the Left has repeatedly refused to face the issue. It is entangled in scandals about antisemitism at an increasing rate. On the Western Left, some antisemitism manifests in the form of conspiracy theories, but there is also a hegemonic refusal to acknowledge antisemitism’s existence and presence. This, in turn, is part of a larger refusal to deal with Jewish issues in general, or to engage with the Jewish community as a real entity. Debates around left antisemitism have risen in tandem with the spread of anti-Zionism inside of the Left, especially since the Second Intifada. Anti-Zionism is not, by itself, antisemitism. One can call for the Right of Return, as well as dissolving Israel as a Jewish state, without being antisemitic. But there is a Venn diagram between anti- Zionism and antisemitism, and the overlap is both significant and has many shades of grey to it. One of the main reasons the Left can’t acknowledge problems with antisemitism is that Jews persistently trouble categories, and the Left would have to rethink many things—including how it approaches anti- imperialism, nationalism of the oppressed, anti-Zionism, identity politics, populism, conspiracy theories, and critiques of finance capital—if it was to truly struggle with the question. The Left understands that white supremacy isn’t just the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis, but that it is part of the fabric of society, and there is no shortcut to unstitching it.

Rather, it was filled with the same nonsense and plain misstatement of fact that we so often see here by opponents of the President. Log in Mr. Obama has no more influence over the price of a commodity in international to vote trade than any other world leader does. The fact is that domestic production is UP. 12 Drilling is UP. But, because oil is traded on a world market, and there is NO mechanism to keep domestically produced oil from being sold on the international market, those facts do not matter to the price of oil. The same is true of the XL pipeline. That crude would be piped to Texas, where it would be sold on the international market to the highest bidder. Accessing that oil would not affect prices of American gasoline one iota, and anyone who understands the international nature of the oil industry knows that.

    THE UNITED STATES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES “Tough but doable” was the way Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Executive Director Howard Wolfson described the Democrats' chances of taking back the House of Representative last Friday. Wolfson had a rough week. Charlie Cook, the respected non-partisan political analyst who is listened to by political reporters, and maybe more importantly, by political PACs, wrote that the math just didn’t seem to be there for the Democrats to pick up the net of six seats they’d need to regain control of the House. During the spring and summer, Cook believed that the Democrats could overcome "the math” with their strength on domestic issues. But, despite a slight edge (48% Democrat- 46% Republican) in the “generic ballot question" (“If the election were held today for Congress, for whom would you vote?”) Democrats haven’t put the issues together in a way to produce the tide it would take to move enough races to produce a Democratic House. Last summer, not only Cook, but top Democrats believed that the Enron, WorldCom and Arthur Anderson scandals, along with the plummeting stock market, had created a climate that could sweep the Democrats back. At one point they even fantasized that all 40 or so competitive races could break their way. But, by August, guns had replaced butter as the overarching national political theme, and the Democrats lost that “mo.” A driving force behind the vote on the Iraq resolution was burning desire by the Democratic leadership to get the focus back on the economy. Indeed, the day after the vote, House Democratic Leader Dick Gephardt and Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle held a high profile economic forum as a signal that the economy was the main concern of Democrats.

    THE 2013 TOP TEN ANTI-ISRAEL GROUPS IN THE U.S. Hundreds of anti-Israel groups operate in the United States today. Indeed, the domestic anti-Israel movement has grown significantly since the second intifada in 2000 and, more recently, since the 2008-9 Gaza War. Student-led organizations with dozens of chapters have been established, antiwar organizations fueled by U.S.-led wars abroad have devoted significant time and resources to anti-Israel efforts and Jewish anti-Zionist groups have made an indelible mark on the anti-Israel movement more broadly. The groups that comprise today’s anti-Israel movement lob any and every accusation against Israel – including charges of Nazi-like crimes, apartheid policies, ethnic cleansing, war crimes and genocide – in an effort to liken Israel to the world’s true past and present evils. These accusations are rarely, if ever, balanced with acknowledgement of Israel’s repeated efforts to make peace with the Palestinians, as well as the Palestinians’ shortcomings on security issues and intransigence on the negotiation front. Ten of these groups in particular represent the “worst of the worst.” Their leaders speak regularly on college campuses, endeavoring to convince the leaders of tomorrow that Israel is the worst violator of international human rights and should be treated as a pariah. Their materials are disseminated widely at anti-Israel conferences and other events. And, they successfully garner support by promoting their work on social media, publishing op-eds in local and national newspapers and appearing on television and radio stations. In October 2010, ADL published a report called “The Top Ten Anti-Israel Groups in the U.S.,” which sought to contextualize the anti-Israel movement in the wake of the 2008-9 Gaza War and identify some of the major players in the movement.
