The project looks at specific conflicts in history beginning with the Iraq War of 2003 in order to present that by this point in history the Israel lobby had already gained ground in American politics. The project then goes back in history to directly contrast this moment of strength by observing the American Jewish community during the Holocaust, the creation of the Jewish state in 1948, the Suez Crisis of 1956, the Six- Day war in 1967, and finally the Yom Kippur war of 1973. The project does not look at the specific causes of the conflicts, but it looks at the role played by the Israel lobby during these events. Because this thesis is very historical, it includes several primary sources as well as interviews in order to support its argument. This thesis is significant because it explores an under discussed subject; the Israel Lobby is constantly observed as the entity that exists today, but scholars overlook its history and the way in which it was able to become this powerful entity. It is necessary to look at the lobby’s history because it enables other lobbies to learn from its experience; in the case of this project, the lobby I am most concerned with is the Arab lobby. Therefore, the Arab lobby can learn from the steps that the Israel lobby has been through in order to build a coalition that has a weighted voice in the American political scene.     Journal of Social Justice, Vol. 9, 2019 (© 2019) ISSN: 2164-7100 Looking Left at Antisemitism Spencer Sunshine* The question of antisemitism inside of the Left—referred to as “left antisemitism”—is a stubborn and persistent problem. And while the Right exaggerates both its depth and scope, the Left has repeatedly refused to face the issue. It is entangled in scandals about antisemitism at an increasing rate. On the Western Left, some antisemitism manifests in the form of conspiracy theories, but there is also a hegemonic refusal to acknowledge antisemitism’s existence and presence. This, in turn, is part of a larger refusal to deal with Jewish issues in general, or to engage with the Jewish community as a real entity. Debates around left antisemitism have risen in tandem with the spread of anti-Zionism inside of the Left, especially since the Second Intifada. Anti-Zionism is not, by itself, antisemitism. One can call for the Right of Return, as well as dissolving Israel as a Jewish state, without being antisemitic. But there is a Venn diagram between anti- Zionism and antisemitism, and the overlap is both significant and has many shades of grey to it. One of the main reasons the Left can’t acknowledge problems with antisemitism is that Jews persistently trouble categories, and the Left would have to rethink many things—including how it approaches anti- imperialism, nationalism of the oppressed, anti-Zionism, identity politics, populism, conspiracy theories, and critiques of finance capital—if it was to truly struggle with the question. The Left understands that white supremacy isn’t just the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis, but that it is part of the fabric of society, and there is no shortcut to unstitching it.

  • The 2013 Top Ten Anti-Israel Groups in the U.S
    THE 2013 TOP TEN ANTI-ISRAEL GROUPS IN THE U.S. Hundreds of anti-Israel groups operate in the United States today. Indeed, the domestic anti-Israel movement has grown significantly since the second intifada in 2000 and, more recently, since the 2008-9 Gaza War. Student-led organizations with dozens of chapters have been established, antiwar organizations fueled by U.S.-led wars abroad have devoted significant time and resources to anti-Israel efforts and Jewish anti-Zionist groups have made an indelible mark on the anti-Israel movement more broadly. The groups that comprise today’s anti-Israel movement lob any and every accusation against Israel – including charges of Nazi-like crimes, apartheid policies, ethnic cleansing, war crimes and genocide – in an effort to liken Israel to the world’s true past and present evils. These accusations are rarely, if ever, balanced with acknowledgement of Israel’s repeated efforts to make peace with the Palestinians, as well as the Palestinians’ shortcomings on security issues and intransigence on the negotiation front. Ten of these groups in particular represent the “worst of the worst.” Their leaders speak regularly on college campuses, endeavoring to convince the leaders of tomorrow that Israel is the worst violator of international human rights and should be treated as a pariah. Their materials are disseminated widely at anti-Israel conferences and other events. And, they successfully garner support by promoting their work on social media, publishing op-eds in local and national newspapers and appearing on television and radio stations. In October 2010, ADL published a report called “The Top Ten Anti-Israel Groups in the U.S.,” which sought to contextualize the anti-Israel movement in the wake of the 2008-9 Gaza War and identify some of the major players in the movement.

Jackson Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, MA 02139 [email protected] May 19, 2021 (last modified May 24, 2021) ABSTRACT In this study, I prove a history of bias against Palestine in a newspaper of international importance — the New York Times — during the First and Second Palestinian Intifadas. Using state-of-the-art natural language processing toolkits as well as a regression model with over 90% accuracy based on a carefully-validated word bank, I analyze over 33,000 NYT articles for (1) their use of active/passive voice and (2) the objectivity, tone, and violent sentiment of the language used. I follow up my quantitative analysis with a qualitative validation step, analyzing biased articles in each period. In conjunction with historical context, I show that anti-Palestinian bias persisted disproportionately in the New York Times during both periods and, in fact, worsened from the First Intifada to the Second. Finally, I connect my findings to current events in Palestine and challenge readers to be critical of the sources they reference. 1 Introduction In this study, I will identify bias against Palestine in a newspaper of international importance – the New York Times – as a case study in the scope of a larger problem of anti-Palestinian bias in American news coverage. I will center my analysis on two important periods in the modern history of the Palestinian struggle – the First and Second Intifadas – both marked by periods of rapid change and an increase in global conversation about Israel and Palestine.

The focus is a history of the conflict itself by presenting it first through the lens of the U.S. using multi-mass media news sources before then presenting media based in the Middle East. By doing so an individual can note the inconsistency and categorical syllogism which occurs. It’s important to note, it is difficulto t change the fundamental opinions individuals have of this conflict or others, but education on media manipulation can allow audiences the ability to speculate and consider the information being provided through a more sophisticated lens. First, by examining the history of the conflict through world knowledge. Then comparing that history to the current media portrayal by considering content, connotation, and biases. This will be separated via region in order to analyze the way in which mass media is manipulated by the means it’s consumed such as Google.
