“Sapta Janma Kritam Papam Makari Hantu Saptami” Saptami that occurs in Makara masam destroys one’s papa (sins) accumulated over seven lives. Magha Shudda saptami is known as Ratha Saptami and it destroys papa, ill health and sadness. Also it is on this day the Chariot (Ratha) with Seven (Sapta) horses of Surya Bhagavan turns towards North and also the Rathotsavams begin at temples. Surya Bhagavan not only provides light and heat to the world but also Vital force (Prana) and Energy (Shakti) to all the living beings (Jeevas). He removes everyday laziness from living beings and brings Conscious activity (Chaitanya) into them. Arghyam (Sacred offering of water) and Surya Namaskaram in the mornings cures diseases and bestow good health. Taking bath during early hours on Rathasapt ami day is very auspicious. Ksheeranna Prasadam is prepared on this day in the open air outside the homes and offered to Lord Suryanarayana. In our temple Navagraha Abhishekam and Aruna Prasna Parayanam is done to Surya Bhagavan, the Chief of all Grahas (Graharaj) on the Ratha Saptami day.
