Griswold1, and William R. Bowlin1,3 ABSTRACT.—We studied the mating system and flower visitors of 2 threatened species of Sclerocactus (Cactaceae) in the Uintah Basin of eastern Utah—an area undergoing rapid energy development. We found that both S. wetlandicus and S. brevispinus are predominantly outcrossed and are essentially self-incompatible. A third presumptive taxon (unde- scribed; here called S. wetlandicus-var1) is fully self-compatible but cannot produce seeds unless the flowers are visited by pollinators. -

Review your county list of threatened and endangered species and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Conservation Data Center (CDC) GIS T&E database to see if any of these species have been identified in your area of work. Additional information on these listed species can be found on the USDI FWS web site under “endangered species”. Consideration of these species during the planning process and determination of potential impacts related to scheduled work will help in the conservation of these rare plants. NOON ! “Intergrated Pest Management” HEALTHY GARDEN – HEALTHY HOME Representatives from the Healthy Garden – Healthy Home program, including several UC Master Gardeners and the UCCE San Diego County IPM Program Representative, Scott Parker, will facilitate a workshop on Integrated Pest Management (IPM). IPM, a scientifically based approach for pest management, incorporates cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical Aphid options as part of an overall pest management program. The primary focus of an IPM program is to utilize a non-toxic or least toxic approach in addressing pest control concerns. During this workshop, Ants, a very common home and garden pest in San Diego County, will be used to demonstrate the proper implementation of an IPM approach. However, additional topic related to cactus and succulents such as Aphids, Aloe Mite, Mealy Bugs, Agave Weevil, and Damping Off Disease will be discussed. Ladybug on the job! Aloe Mite (Yuck!) FLORA DEL BAJÍO Y DE REGIONES ADYACENTES Fascículo complementario XXVII agosto de 2011 LA DIVERSIDAD VEGETAL DEL ESTADO DE GUANAJUATO, MÉXICO Por Sergio Zamudio* Instituto de Ecología, A.C. Centro Regional del Bajío Pátzcuaro, Michoacán y Raquel Galván Villanueva Departamento de Botánica Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas Instituto Politécnico Nacional México, D.F. RESUMEN Se hace una revisión de la riqueza de plantas vasculares que habitan en el estado de Guanajuato, México, tomando como referencia la base de datos del herbario IEB y la literatura especializada existente. Se registran 182 familias, 904 géneros y 2774 especies, incluyendo 41 variedades y 10 subespecies, por lo que la riqueza florística de Guanajuato se considera moderadamente alta, comparada con la de otros estados de México. Las Angiospermas o plantas con flores son las más abundantes en el estado y están representadas por 161 familias, 860 géneros y 2631 especies; le siguen las Pteridofitas con 17 familias, 38 géneros y 125 espe- cies y finalmente las Gimnospermas con 4 familias, 6 géneros y 18 especies. Se proporciona la lista de especies ordenada alfabéticamente por familias. * Trabajo realizado con apoyo económico del Instituto de Ecología, A.C. (cuenta 20006), del Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología y de la Comisión Nacional para el Conocimiento y Uso de la Biodiversidad. 1 Dentro de las Angiospermas, las familias mejor representadas son Composi- tae con 119 géneros y 465 especies, Gramineae con 83 géneros y 250 especies y Leguminosae con 58 géneros y 188 especies. Entre los géneros más diversos destacan Euphorbia (45 spp.), Solanum (43 spp.), Salvia (42 spp.), Mammillaria (35 spp.), Muhlenbergia (34 spp.) y Eupatorium (33 spp.). -

Unpublished maps and report for a SKEP project supported by CEPF grant no 1064410304. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Stakeholders in the southern karoo region of the SKEP project identified the need for a more detailed vegetation map of the Little Karoo region. CEPF funded the project team to map the vegetation of the Little Karoo region (ca. 20 000 km ²) at a scale of 1:50 000. The main outputs required were to classify, map and describe the vegetation in such a way that end-users could use the digital maps at four different tiers. Results of this study were also to be presented to stakeholders in the region to solicit their opinion about the dissemination of the products of this project and to suggest how this project should be developed further. In this document we explain how a six-tier vegetation classification system was developed, tested and improved in the field and the vegetation was mapped. Some A3-sized examples of the vegetation maps are provided, with the full datasets available in digital (ARCVIEW) format. A total of 56 habitat types, that comprises 369 vegetation units, were identified and mapped in the Little Karoo region.
