PERMANENT MISSION OF AFGHANISTAN TO THE UNITED NATIONS

August 23, 1966

I write this letter only for your personal information to inform you that His Excellency Mohammad Hashim Maiwandwal, the Prime Minister of Afghanistan, will visit the United States sometime in the middle of the month of November of this year, on the invitation *>'"1*aaR*'*a"*'*' ^ ' .. of the President of the United States. There is a possibility of his visiting New York, his meeting with the Secretary-General, and his addressing the General Assembly of the United Nations, No definite dates have, as yet, been determined, but I thought it would be useful to inform you of the approximate date so that with your cooperation, as it has always been extended to my Mission, we shall be able to work out the definite appointments on the arrival of the Prime Minister. I am confident that you and the officers concerned in the United Nations Secretariat will keep the abovementioned possibilities in mind. I shall convey to you any definite information on the matter as soon as it is available to me.

jR. Pazhwak Mr. C.V. Narasimhan Chef de Cabinet of the Secretary-General United Nations, New York 1o I §•, New York, March 27, 196?

Dear Mr. Secretary-General,

I was extremely distressed to verify this morning that I had missed the luncheon, on Friday the 24th, in honour of His Excellency General Anastasio Somoza Debayle, President-Elect of Nicaragua, to which you had so kindly invited me . As the Brazilian Mission closed for Good Friday, I spent the day working alone in my office. In my secretary's absence, I was not reminded of my commitments for the day and, con- sequently, I regret to say, I failed to remember my luncheon engagement for that day. I wish to present to you my sincerest apologies for my absence from the luncheon and for the inconvenience caused thereby. \) Very truly yours,

Geraldo de Carvalho Silos Deputy Permanent Representative of Brazil^to the United Nations Charge dTAffaires a. i.

The President of the Security Council told me that "though he had a previous en- gagement he would make a special effort to accept the SG's invitation". Same for M.Seydoux. Mr.Goldberg, who had accepted, declined this afternoon, giving no reason and asking that we extend an invitation to the sixth and last Ambassador on his delegation. He met for 2 hours with the President this a.m. Lord Garden declined, saying he will "be o- out of town and made no attempt to have any one else invited in his place. The worst comes from the least expected! The Permanent Representative of ...Nicaragua He excused himself at noon to-day saying he had been called by President Johnson.Though he would be the Dean of the diplomatic Corps of the UN if there were such a thing,he seldom puts in an appearance at any UN event affair or even working meeting of the HPT. I cannot imagine how one can be so discourteou: to the SG receiving one's own President, Ife^

Dear Mr. Secretary General,

I hasten, on my return to Geneva, to express my appreciation and that of my colleagues for the luncheon on January 25th. We appreciated your hospitality and also found your comments useful to us as we try to find the way for the Churches to support your efforts for a peaceful settlement in South East Asia. I shall try to keep in touch with you in these next weeks as to any developments in our plans or programme.

Again, thank you for receiving us. Sincerely yours,

U Thant Secretary General The United Nations New York, New York 10017 Dear Mr. Secretary General: I want to express again my appreciation for the opportunity of sharing in the luncheon with you, Dr. Blake, and Dr. Fagley. Many of us are certain that the question of the pre- suppositions and basic objectives of United States foreign policy in Vietnam and Southeast Asia should increasingly occupy the attention of this country. I was encouraged by your interest in these matters, as indeed so many of us in the churches are inspired by your leadership in the struggle for peace. Truly,

UNITED KINGDOM MISSION TO THE UNITED NATIONS 845 THIRD AVENUE v NEW YORK.N.Y.

17 January, 1967.

I write to thank you most sincerely for the kind thought in asking me to your farewell lunch for Roger Jackling. As you may imagine we are very sad to see them both go, but in spite of this I enjoyed yesterday (as I always do when you kindly think of me for a lunch on the 38th floor). With very many thanks,

(C.P. Hope)
