THE SUSTAINABLE ANGLE APRIL 2015 SUSTAINABLE TEXTILES: TRADE SHOW DIRECTORY APRIL 2015

INTRODUCTION

The Sustainable Angle is a not for profit organisation which initiates and supports projects which contribute to minimizing the environmental impact of industry and society, and that help make it easier for companies to make informed decisions when it comes to sustainability. Our core project is the annual Future Fabrics Expo, showcasing individually researched fabrics with a reduced environmental impact for companies of all sizes and market levels.

As part of our research process, for several years we have been visiting international textiles trade fairs, scouring the aisles for companies that are committed to reducing their environmental impact, and seeking out commercially available sustainable material innovations, from yarns to fabrics to finishing processes.

Whilst the major fairs are increasingly acknowledging sustainability through labelling schemes or small sustainability areas, we are still seeing a lack of clear information provision, mill representatives who do not have the full details of their company’s actions towards sustainability, and the absence of a clear language for sustainability.

Acknowledging the challenges this raises for buyers and designers around the world, we strive to remove the guesswork and to get you the full sustainability details you might not find at an average fair. Using globally recognised certifications, and our environmental sustainability criteria, we can visually highlight the benefits of each fabric as well as providing researched explanations regarding the cultivation, production and processing of fibres and fabrics.

Added to that, we source our fabrics from all over the world, and have showcased thousands of fabrics from hundreds of mills based in almost 30 countries on 6 continents. Many of these mills and fabrics we discover are showcased in the annual Future Fabrics Expo, and several of those are included on www.futurefabricsvirtualexpo.com.

However, we wanted to start sharing more of our discoveries with you, as soon as we make them. That led us to collating this trade show directory of some of our favourite discoveries, which we hope you will find helpful.

SUSTAINABLE TEXTILES: TRADE SHOW DIRECTORY APRIL 2015

ABOUT THE DIRECTORY

This directory contains summarised profiles of almost 40 diverse international mills and suppliers that have developed and marketed materials and finishes with a reduced environmental impact.

Products range from certified organic and recycled for fashion and performance, to closed loop processed cellulosics, beautiful natural materials integrating banana fibres and colour grown cotton, and more sustainable finishing processes which reduce water use and eliminate the use of harmful chemicals, to name only a few.

Each mill is provided with a brief overview of its sustainable products, product ranges, initiatives, best practice policies and/or certifications, with a focus on environmentally and socially sustainable attributes.

As many mills produce diverse fabrics and cater for a range of product categories, all entries are listed alphabetically per mill, and include country, contact details, and which trade show they were found at.

NOTES:

We recommend that you contact companies directly to discuss specific product needs in more detail, and to verify all certifications, lead times and prices.

Please note that the mills and fabrics included in this report will not all automatically be included in the Future Fabrics Expo, or on www.futurefabricsvirtualexpo.com.

You can visit www.thesustainableangle.org/future-fabrics for more information about the Future Fabrics Expo, and our environmental sustainability criteria.
