From the

Pastor’s Desk ARE YOU THE ONE . . .?

Many times in our lives we come across people whom we are called upon to pick up at airports, train or bus terminals. We start looking for them. When we figure it out that the one we are looking for is the one coming in our direction we start moving in the direction of that person. When we come to the person we are looking for, to make sure we ask “Are you the one I am supposed to pick up”? And once it is confirmed we feel happy to know that we have picked up the right person. Our task is completed and we feel good about it.

Something similar was to take place in the life of St. John the Baptist, the forerunner of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. John the Baptist’s role was to prepare the way for the Lord. He went about doing everything need- ed for the required process, so much so, that he did not spare even King Herald from living an immoral life. And the outcome of it was, he was arrested and put in prison. How would he know then, that his job is completed and that the Messiah has come since he was held in prison? To be certain he sent his disciples to Jesus with this question, “Are you the one who is to come or should we look for another?”

What urgency he had, so too dedication and determination in fulfilling the task assigned to him. While even in prison his concern about the things he has been hearing or being reported to him, does it apply to the coming of the Messiah? His doubts are cleared when Jesus makes it very evident to the disciples of John the Baptist of the role that he has been carrying out which meant that the Messiah is already in their midst.

If our Lord and Messiah is in our midst, then are you still looking for someone else? Who else do we need to look for other than the one on whom our whole life depends? John the Baptist although being in prison could not meet with Jesus, so made use of his disciples. Do we need to be looking for someone else? If so, who could that be? Or what else could that be? Wealth, passion for worldly things, fame, pleasure…. No. We are looking for the one who is already in our midst. It is to him that our hearts belong.

We wait patiently preparing ourselves so that we can welcome the one who is waiting to come into our hearts and make his dwelling within us. “Our hearts cannot rest until it rests in thee,” says St. Augustine of Hippo. Have you found the one you are looking for? Well, you could be shopping around for many things that you will need this Christmas.

Be focused on the one thing needed as John the Baptist did and be prepared to receive him without much distraction. Have a blessed Advent week.

FY 2017 INCOME SUMMARY 7/1/16 - 11/30/16 Actual Budget Difference Actual Last Yr. Difference November 40,318 41,000 (682) 40,318 49,747 (9,429)

Year to Date 202,693 201,000 1,693 202,693 207,709 (5,016)

We are slightly ahead of budget, but sƟll behind last year. Thank You for your conƟnued support of our church. Would you consider just $1 more per week? That $1 weekly from all registered families will help St. Isaac Jogues complete some of the projects that are currently on-hold. $1 X 800 families X 52 weeks = $41,600! A lile extra could make a BIG difference!

AWAY IN A MANGER…

The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay…It is an Advent custom to pad the manger with good deeds so that the Christ Child has a soft place at Christ- mas. Beginning next weekend, the First Sunday of Advent, you will find bags of hay at the doors of the church. When you ar- rive, place some hay, based on your good works, and place it in the basket. During the Presentation of the Gifts the hay baskets from each of the three doors will also be brought forward. After Mass it will be placed in a larger basket which will accumulate the hay (good deeds) each of the four weeks. When the manger is put up, all the hay will be placed inside so to be ready on Christmas for the statue of the Christ Child. How will you share the spirit this Advent in word and in deed?

THE GIVING TREE

We give thanks to God for this wonderful opportunity to bring Christmas joy, music and cheer to the residents of our neighboring nursing homes. We especially need people to help us deliver small balloons to the residents who are not able to leave their rooms. All you need is the Christmas spirit!

Here is an excerpt from a thank you note that we have received from the Glenbridge Nursing Home:

“To the Parishioners at St. Isaac Jogues Parish, A simple act of kindness has a beauty all its own. Thank you for your kindness and the beautiful Christmas gift.”

Please make a Giving Tree contribution of whatever amount you can and return it in the collection plate. We appreciate all donations. Envelopes are available at the church entrances. Make your checks out to St. Isaac Jogues.

Thank you for your compassion this Christmas season!

JESSE TREE HOME MATERIALS

The Jesse tree continues to fill as we add more ornaments to help us remember the story of our salvation. This week light your Ad- vent Wreath (three candles) or a single candle and reflect on each day’s symbol, read the Scripture passage, and pray the prayer or carry out the action. Decide how you will share what you learned or discovered from your prayer time with others. Thank you to Beverly Smith & Fr. Luczak for the materials.

Dec. 11 – Gideon; Judges 6:11-16, 7:1-8, 15-22; The jar and torch remind us that Gideon was an unlikely hero when God used him to defeat the Midianites. Jesus was not the hero the Jews were expecting in the coming Messiah. Think of someone who has made an impact on/ influenced your faith although you did not think of them as doing so at that time. If they are still alive, perhaps write them a note of thanks; otherwise, offer a prayer of gratitude.

Dec. 12 – Ruth; Ruth 4:13-17; Ruth was a foreign widow who believed in the one true God. Boaz met Ruth when she gleaned grain from his fields. He later married Ruth saving her from a life of poverty. Jesus later came to save us. Ruth is listed in the genealogy of Matthew’s gospel. O God, you exclude no one from your love. Help us, who are in- spired by the story of Ruth’s conversion, to welcome and cherish all who are new or returning to the Faith. Amen.

Dec. 13 – Samuel; II Samuel 7:16, Isaiah 9:6-7, Ezekiel 37:24-25; When God’s people asked for a king, Samuel anointed Saul first and then David. The crown reminds us of God’s promise to David that his rule would never end. The promise is fulfilled in David’s descendent, Jesus, who reigns forever. Join us to visit the local nursing homes to- night at 6:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. Talk with a family member or friend who no longer practices their Catholic faith and find out why. Share how Jesus has been faithful to you.

Dec. 14 – David; I Samuel 16:1, 10-13; David was a shepherd whom God made a king. The staff reminds us that our forever king, Jesus, calls himself the Good Shepherd who brings us back to himself. David is a great-grandfather of Jesus. O God of David, your choose unlikely people to show your power and mercy. David, a young shepherd, was a singer of songs rather than a doer of deeds. Your power in him made the boy a hero, and the hero a king. Even when he sinned, your mercy established David’s line forever. Help us to see people as you see them. Amen.

Dec. 15 – Jonah; Jonah 1:1-17; Jonah spent three days and three nights in the belly of a big fish. Jesus described how long he would be in the tomb using this familiar story. O Lord, when your people grew corrupt and selfish, Jonah cried out for repentance and brought sinners hope. Teach us to see what is wrong, but to look beyond it…to see alter- natives for good. Amen. Join us for the Simbang Gabi Mass at 7 p.m. as Christmas draws near!

Dec. 16 – Isaiah; Isaiah 6:1-10; Isaiah saw God in all his glory and described tongs with a hot coal touching his lips to s how that he was forgiven. Isaiah asked God to use him but most rejected his message. The tongs remind us that Jesus’ message is about forgiveness but many reject his message as well. O Lord, a true prophet allows you to speak through personal gifts and needs. A great prophet makes your Word live! Isaiah’s vision of the Messiah is that of a triumphant king and suffering servant. Help us to show that you are with us in the way we accept life’s joys and sor- rows. Allow our lives to speak for you. Amen.

Dec. 17 – Mary; Isaiah 7:14; The lily represents purity. It had been prophesied that the savior would be born of a virgin and that God would be with us. Mary was the virgin who gave birth to Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us. She was also a descendent of David and Abraham. Come celebrate the Lord’s mercy and peace at the Advent Reconciliation Service at 11 a.m. Lord, you chose Mary, and Mary chose you. In that there is an echo of Israel’s covenant – an Ancient Word and a New Song. Help us to be like Mary, for like a well-tuned instrument her life resonated with the Spirit and pro- claimed your greatness! Amen.
