Many times in our lives we come across people whom we are called upon to pick up at airports, train or bus terminals. We start looking for them. When we figure it out that the one we are looking for is the one coming in our direction we start moving in the direction of that person. When we come to the person we are looking for, to make sure we ask “Are you the one I am supposed to pick up”? And once it is confirmed we feel happy to know that we have picked up the right person. Our task is completed and we feel good about it. Something similar was to take place in the life of St. John the Baptist, the forerunner of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. John the Baptist’s role was to prepare the way for the Lord. He went about doing everything need- ed for the required process, so much so, that he did not spare even King Herald from living an immoral life. And the outcome of it was, he was arrested and put in prison. How would he know then, that his job is completed and that the Messiah has come since he was held in prison? To be certain he sent his disciples to Jesus with this question, “Are you the one who is to come or should we look for another?” What urgency he had, so too dedication and determination in fulfilling the task assigned to him. While even in prison his concern about the things he has been hearing or being reported to him, does it apply to the coming of the Messiah? His doubts are cleared when Jesus makes it very evident to the disciples of John the Baptist of the role that he has been carrying out which meant that the Messiah is already in their midst. If our Lord and Messiah is in our midst, then are you still looking for someone else? Who else do we need to look for other than the one on whom our whole life depends? John the Baptist although being in prison could not meet with Jesus, so made use of his disciples. Do we need to be looking for someone else? If so, who could that be? Or what else could that be? Wealth, passion for worldly things, fame, pleasure…. No. We are looking for the one who is already in our midst. It is to him that our hearts belong. We wait patiently preparing ourselves so that we can welcome the one who is waiting to come into our hearts and make his dwelling within us. “Our hearts cannot rest until it rests in thee,” says St. Augustine of Hippo. Have you found the one you are looking for? Well, you could be shopping around for many things that you will need this Christmas. Be focused on the one thing needed as John the Baptist did and be prepared to receive him without much distraction. Have a blessed Advent week. -Fr. AWAY IN A MANGER… The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay…It is an Advent custom to pad the manger with good deeds so that the Christ Child has a soft place at Christ- mas. Beginning next weekend, the First Sunday of Advent, you will find bags of hay at the doors of the church. When you ar- rive, place some hay, based on your good works, and place it in the basket. During the Presentation of the Gifts the hay baskets from each of the three doors will also be brought forward. After Mass it will be placed in a larger basket which will accumulate the hay (good deeds) each of the four weeks. When the manger is put up, all the hay will be placed inside so to be ready on Christmas for the statue of the Christ Child. How will you share the spirit this Advent in word and in deed?
