The Jews – Teachers of the Nazis?
Jan-Erik Ebbestad Hansen (Oslo) über: The Jews – Teachers of the Nazis? Anti-Semitism in Norwegian Anthroposophy Abstract This article is an investigation, from the perspective of the history of ideas, of the view that central Norwegian anthroposophists took of Jews and Judaism from the interwar period to the period shortly after the Second World War. A central element of the investigation is the demonstration that Norwegian anthroposophists had an anti- Semitic understanding of Judaism and that they considered Judaism as the negative counterpart to Germanentum and Deutschtum. An introductory contextualizing section of this paper gives an account of Rudolf Steiner’s definition of Judaism and of the decisive influence he had on the Norwegian anthroposophists. Steiner’s view of Jews is defined as assimilationist anti-Semitism. Secondly, there will be a description of the principal characteristics of the Norwegian Germanentum and anti-Semitism in this period.1 Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel untersucht aus ideengeschichtlicher Perspektive die Sichtweise, die norwegische Anthroposophen in der Zeit zwischen den Weltkriegen bis kurz nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg auf Juden und das Judentum hatten. Ein zentraler Punkt dieser Untersuchung ist zu zeigen, dass norwegische Anthroposophen eine antisemitische Auffassung vom Judentum hatten und Judentum als negatives Gegenstück zum Germanentum oder Deutschtum verstanden. Im einführenden Abschnitt zur Kontextualisierung wird neben Rudolf Steiners Definition von Judentum der große Einfluss geschildert, den er auf die norwegischen Anthroposophen hatte. Steiners Sicht auf Juden wird als assimilationistischer Antisemitismus definiert. Zweitens werden die grundlegenden Züge des norwegischen Germanentums und Antisemitismus dieser Zeit beschrieben. “The Catholic danger” Anti-Catholicism and the formation of Scandinavian national identity 1815-1965 Anti-Catholicism is a phenomenon as old as the Protestant church. What makes it into a unique object of study, is its spread and growth during the 19th century, when it was established as a transnational frame of reference articulated all over Europe, as well as in North America. Secular liberals and conservatives, protestants and others, in both predominantly Catholic and Protestant countries all used well-established negative images of the Catholic church to position themselves politically and culturally. Tales about treacherous Jesuits and scheming popes were an important and pervasive part of European culture. The Nordic region constituted a very particular setting for such conceptions. Also here Anti- Catholic ideas and images were widespread. But why? Until the liberalisation of religious legislation in the mid-nineteenth century, it was illegal for the citizens in the Scandinavian countries to belong to other churches than the established Lutheran churches. In Finland this interdict lasted until 1922 (Werner, 2005). Thus, for a long time the Catholic minority represented a numerically insignificant group of foreign believers. If there were no Catholics, where did the conflicts come from? Whereas topics such as anti-Semitism in recent years have seen increased attention from scholars, the Scandinavian history of anti-Catholicism stands out as a neglected field of study. International research has emphasised the importance of anti-Catholicism for processes of identity formation across Europe, both within established Protestant churches and national liberal movements. The connection between anti-Catholicism and other anti-movements such as anti-Semitism, anti-feminism and anti-Communism has also been pointed to. -

The Missionary Impulse in Norwegian History
The missionary impulse in Norwegian history Roald Berg Department of Cultural Studies and Languages, University of Stavanger, Norway Abstract The paper discusses the influence of church and mission in Norwegian politics during the nineteenth century. Norway, a rather small country by European standards, was a major missionary provider in Zululand. The influence of mission in Norway is demonstrated by the fact that the missionary school in Stavanger was the second national educational institution to have its own building after the Napoleonic wars, the University of Oslo being the first one. The “missionary impulse” was also important in Parliament as many of the leading politicians were active believers – though split between liberals and conserva- tives. The power of religion in Norwegian history – both local- ly and at the national level as well as politically and socially - was so overwhelming that it has become imperative to recog- nise the “missionary impulse” as a key area of research for an understanding of 19th century Norwegian history. History and historical events are not stochastic incidents. There are reasons behind the fact that Norway, a seemingly insignificant and distant small power on the edge of the polar seas, was one of the leading missionary coun- tries in the latter half of the nineteenth century. These reasons account for the development of the transnational research project Norwegian Mission and Cultural Interaction in Madagascar and South Africa (NMCI) in the city of Stavanger on the west coast of Norway. The reasons for this project pertain to the history of Norway. In the nineteenth century Norway was a deeply religious society. -

6Amoral threattosociety? – the Jesuit danger 1814–1961 Afather and his “Jesuitism” From 1928 onwards,Heinrich Roos (1904–1977) was aJesuitfather in Copenha- gen. He was German-born, but had acquired Danishcitizenship. Ever since the Jesuits had been expelled from Bismarck’sGermanyinthe early1870s, Jesuit schools in Denmark had taught in both Germanand Danish. ManyGermans soughttoattend DanishJesuit schools, especiallyduringthe period whenthe or- der’sinstitutions werebanned in Germany.Roos taught at the school in Copen- hagen, in addition to holding aposition as philologist at the city’suniversity.¹ In February 1954,the Theological Association in Norwayapplied to the Min- istry of Justice on behalf of Roos for an exemption from the constitutional ban on Jesuits.They wanted him to visit the country to present alecture on the work and teachings of the Jesuits.² The issue of the exclusion of the Jesuits had been raised in connection with the government’sratification of the European Convention on Human Rights in 1951. Norwayhad expressed reservations about the clause on religious freedom because of the ban on Jesuits, which, at an international level, was problematic and controversial. In 1952, therefore, the government for- warded aproposal to repeal this last exclusionary provision from the Constitu- tion. It was in this context that Father Roos applied to come to Norway – but he was turned down. A Brief History of the Scandinavian Churches after the Reformation To understand properly the contemporary situation of the confessional movements in the Scandinavian churches requires an outline of the post- Reformation history of those churches. The state-church system that is still prevalent in the Nordic countries has resulted in certain distinctive characteristics that would otherwise be incomprehensible. This paper concentrates on the situation in Norway, both because it is the situation with which the author is most familiar, and because the situation is essentially similar in the other Scandinavian countries. -

This study contextualises her main anti-Catholic work, Sankt Peters himmelnøkler (St. Peter’s Keys to Heaven), looking at the debates on the Catholic church in Norway throughout the 1920s, as well as on the intertextual relationship between Steinsvik’s writings and earlier anti- Catholic works, primarily works produced in Victorian England, by nativist American writers in the 19th century and by German writers involved in the Kulturkampf. The study shows how Steinsvik conveyed internationally well-known anti-Catholic propaganda, stereotypes and conspiracy theories to a Norwegian audience. Furthermore, the study explores the debates surrounding the Norwegian constitutionary ban against the Jesuit order, a ban which was upheld by parliament in 1925, and which remained part of the Norwegian constitution until 1956. A final chapter looks at modern-day Norwegian anti-Jesuitism and conspiracy culture, and at the use of Steinsvik’s writings within this framework. 3 Innhaldsoversikt Abstract ..................................................................................................................................... -

Masteroppgave i Kulturmøte Kiellands kirke – innspill i det religiøse felt Dag Torbjørgson, mai 2014 1 2 English summary The subject of this essay is the cultural encounter between a radical literary culture and a conservative religious culture. Timeline for the essay is primarily the breakthrough of modernism in Norway and Scandinavia (1870-1890), though earlier events relevant to the subject is brought in. At the time of the modernism's breakthrough, new ways of thinking regarding science had emerged, and in 1884 Norway got a new form of state practice through the implementation of parliamentarism. In this essay the literary culture is presented through the Norwegian writer Alexander L. Kielland. In the field of Norwegian literature, this time in the literary history is often viewed as a golden age, and Norway had several great writers in the genre of realism. Alexander L. Kielland wrote a number of publications, in which he was rather critical concerning the clergy and the state church. In my efforts to analyze how the criticism of the church was received, I have applied the “theory of fields” by the french sociologist Bourdieu. According to this theory, there are well-defined social fields in society, which by some lengths are autonomic. The members of each field strive to acquire the advantages unique with that field, or the capital associated with that field. Based partly on the access to capital, the members of the field have different social positions. In this essay I have demonstrated a religious field in Norway in the nineteenth century, where the members, among other things, fought for religious capital.
