This study contextualises her main anti-Catholic work, Sankt Peters himmelnøkler (St. Peter’s Keys to Heaven), looking at the debates on the Catholic church in Norway throughout the 1920s, as well as on the intertextual relationship between Steinsvik’s writings and earlier anti- Catholic works, primarily works produced in Victorian England, by nativist American writers in the 19th century and by German writers involved in the Kulturkampf. The study shows how Steinsvik conveyed internationally well-known anti-Catholic propaganda, stereotypes and conspiracy theories to a Norwegian audience. Furthermore, the study explores the debates surrounding the Norwegian constitutionary ban against the Jesuit order, a ban which was upheld by parliament in 1925, and which remained part of the Norwegian constitution until 1956. A final chapter looks at modern-day Norwegian anti-Jesuitism and conspiracy culture, and at the use of Steinsvik’s writings within this framework. 3 Innhaldsoversikt Abstract startpunkt. For dette arbeidet var startpunktet eit intervju med Marta Steinsvik publisert i Aftenposten, som eg kom over då eg leitte etter døme på antisemittisme i norske borgarlege aviser på 1920-talet. Intervjuet hadde ei overskrift og ei innleiing som gjorde at det var lett å leggja merke til: Jøder og jesuiter. Slip ikke jesuiterordenen og den jødiske storkapital ind i landet. Det vilde være nationalt selvmord. Fru Martha Steinsvik uttaler seg i et interview om disse spørsmaal.1 Vidare i teksten heiter det at den «kjendte taler og skribent, fru Martha Steinsvik har i den senere tid behandlet spørsmaalet om jøder og jesuiter i en række foredrag hun har holdt utover landet».2 I intervjuet gjer Steinsvik det klårt at ho meiner eidslovsmennene i 1814 var «de klokeste mænd, vi har hat i dette land», fordi dei stengde grensene for både jødar og jesuittar. Steinsvik nektar for at ho er jødehatar, hevdar at ho har sympati for «dette merkelige og begavede folk», men heldt deretter fram med å formidla ei rekkje konspirasjonsteoriar om jødane. Ho meiner blant anna at dei har stått sentralt under alle revolusjonar og at dei stod bak verdskrigen frå 1914-18.3 Medan det meste av intervjuet handlar nettopp om jødane, dukkar etter kvart også jesuittane opp. Ho knyter også jesuittane saman med jødane, før ho fyrer av mot både jesuittane spesielt og katolisismen generelt: [Jeg] maa tilstaa, eg ser med sorg paa at det intense propaganda-arbeide, de driver her i landet, synes at lykkes saa godt. Forleden dag blev her i byen bare frå en enkelt loge døpt paa en gang femten protestanter, som altsaa gik over til katolicismen. Ja, for de maa nemlig døpes om igjen. Vor kristne daab er ikke god nok. Det vil sikkert før ha jesuitene ind i landet en til eksempel kvindelige prester.4 For meg var intervjuet med Martha Steinsvik eit fascinerande innblikk inn i ei anna tid, ei tid der anti-semittismen var rimeleg salonfähig i Noreg, stoverein nok til å sleppa til i eit intervjue i storavisa Aftenposten utan fnugg av kritisk vinkling. Darby Dyar, Astronomy Approved By: Christopher Condit, Geology CE Type: Departmental Honors Project Using a gridded version of maritan topography with the computer program Gridview, this project studied the depth-diameter relationship of martian impact craters. The work encompasses 361 profiles of impacts with diameters larger than 15 kilometers and is a continuation of work that was started at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, Texas under the guidance of Dr. Walter S. Keifer. Using the most ‘pristine,’ or deepest craters in the data a depth-diameter relationship was determined: d = 0.610D 0.327 , where d is the depth of the crater and D is the diameter of the crater, both in kilometers. This relationship can then be used to estimate the theoretical depth of any impact radius, and therefore can be used to estimate the pristine shape of the crater. With a depth-diameter ratio for a particular crater, the measured depth can then be compared to this theoretical value and an estimate of the amount of material within the crater, or fill, can then be calculated. The data includes 140 named impact craters, 3 basins, and 218 other impacts. The named data encompasses all named impact structures of greater than 100 kilometers in diameter.

It actively selects nutrient and drug intake, regulates the symbiosis with the intestinal microbiota and keeps the epithelium protected from the attack of pathogens. All these functions are closely connected to the chemical and structural complexity of this biological material, on which its viscoelastic and diffusive properties depend. Many models have been proposed to replicate these characteristics using glycoproteins in solution and possibly the addition of other mucus components, such as lipids and other proteins. In the field of mucus modelling, an overall view of the mucus as a material, having its own viscous, rheological and diffusive characteristics, has been undersized with Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 Unported Licence. In a controversial career, Steinsvik achieved notoriety for her theological views and contributions with regards to a woman’s role in the church. In detailing Steinsvik’s activities, largely from her personal archival sources, this thesis suggests that Marta Steinsvik, the first woman to preach in a Christian church in Norway, played a vital role in paving the way for women to enter the priesthood. This project aims to revisit the story of a woman whose contributions to the debate surrounding women in the priesthood have been too sparsely researched, and do not adequately portray the multiple ways she influenced her society. Thus, an important part of this research elucidates her contributions to the debate regarding the role of women as priests. Despite her insatiable hunger for knowledge and her attempts at diverse careers such as medicine, theology, and Egyptology, Steinsvik never completed any of these studies. This point serves to corroborate her contribution even more when considering the importance society places on product vs process. It adds more credibility to the stimulus of her contributions, and, thus, situates her in a unique position of influence.

Anti-Semitism in Norwegian Anthroposophy Abstract This article is an investigation, from the perspective of the history of ideas, of the view that central Norwegian anthroposophists took of Jews and Judaism from the interwar period to the period shortly after the Second World War. A central element of the investigation is the demonstration that Norwegian anthroposophists had an anti- Semitic understanding of Judaism and that they considered Judaism as the negative counterpart to Germanentum and Deutschtum. An introductory contextualizing section of this paper gives an account of Rudolf Steiner’s definition of Judaism and of the decisive influence he had on the Norwegian anthroposophists. Steiner’s view of Jews is defined as assimilationist anti-Semitism. Secondly, there will be a description of the principal characteristics of the Norwegian Germanentum and anti-Semitism in this period.1 Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel untersucht aus ideengeschichtlicher Perspektive die Sichtweise, die norwegische Anthroposophen in der Zeit zwischen den Weltkriegen bis kurz nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg auf Juden und das Judentum hatten. Ein zentraler Punkt dieser Untersuchung ist zu zeigen, dass norwegische Anthroposophen eine antisemitische Auffassung vom Judentum hatten und Judentum als negatives Gegenstück zum Germanentum oder Deutschtum verstanden.     “The Catholic danger” Anti-Catholicism and the formation of Scandinavian national identity 1815-1965 Anti-Catholicism is a phenomenon as old as the Protestant church. What makes it into a unique object of study, is its spread and growth during the 19th century, when it was established as a transnational frame of reference articulated all over Europe, as well as in North America. Secular liberals and conservatives, protestants and others, in both predominantly Catholic and Protestant countries all used well-established negative images of the Catholic church to position themselves politically and culturally. Tales about treacherous Jesuits and scheming popes were an important and pervasive part of European culture. The Nordic region constituted a very particular setting for such conceptions. Also here Anti- Catholic ideas and images were widespread. But why? Until the liberalisation of religious legislation in the mid-nineteenth century, it was illegal for the citizens in the Scandinavian countries to belong to other churches than the established Lutheran churches. In Finland this interdict lasted until 1922 (Werner, 2005). Thus, for a long time the Catholic minority represented a numerically insignificant group of foreign believers. If there were no Catholics, where did the conflicts come from? Whereas topics such as anti-Semitism in recent years have seen increased attention from scholars, the Scandinavian history of anti-Catholicism stands out as a neglected field of study. International research has emphasised the importance of anti-Catholicism for processes of identity formation across Europe, both within established Protestant churches and national liberal movements. The connection between anti-Catholicism and other anti-movements such as anti-Semitism, anti-feminism and anti-Communism has also been pointed to.
