Dr. YSRHU E-News Letter Fortnightly E.Newsletter of Dr.Y.S.R.Horticultural University Dr. YSRHU e-News letter Fortnightly e.Newsletter of Dr.Y.S.R.Horticultural University Volume.III, Issue – 24 Dr.YSRHU e.Newsletter 15th —31st December, 2017 Fortnight Focus Events Education Research Extension General Events Seventh Inter collegiate sports, games, cultural and literary meet Seventh Inter collegiate sports, games, cultural and literary meet for the year 2017-18 was conducted at College of Horticulture, Venkataramannagudem from 17th to 20th December 2017. Sri.Chiranjiv Choudhary, IFS, Vice-chancellor graced the occasion as the chief guest. Dr. A. Sujatha, Dean of Student Affairs and Dr. M. Lakashmi Narayana Reddy, Dean of Horticulture along with uni- versity officers attended the function as guests of honour. Dr. K. Uma Jyothi, Associate Dean, College of Horticulture, Venkataramannagudem presided over the function. Students from four constituent colleges as well as private colleges affiliated to Dr.YSRHU have participated in the meet. Hon’ble Vice-chancellor distributed prizes to all the winners. Ms. Karuna Priya, CoH, Anantapuramu secured Dr.M.B.Nageswara Rao University Gold Medal in classical dance. Mr. P. Vamsi, CoH, Chinalataripi secured Dr.M.B.Nageswara Rao University Gold Medal in Mono action. Championship in games was bagged by the students of CoH, Venkataramannagudem where as the championship in athletics was bagged by the students of CoH, Anantharajupeta. Over all championship for sports and games was bagged by the students of CoH, Venkataramannagudem. Sri.Chiranjiv Choudhary, IFS, Ex-officio Secretary to the Government of A.P & Vice-Chancellor (FAC) monitored the schemes implemented by Dept. of Horticulture and visited guava, coconut, oil palm, cocoa, papaya fields and poly houses in West Godavari district on 21.12.2017. In this visit Dr.R.V.S.K.Redddy Director of Extension, along with Scientists of KVK, Venkataramannagudem and Department officials interacted with the farmers and given technical suggestions. Education Ms. Rajyasree Choudhary, great grandniece of Late Sri Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose visited College of Horticulture, Venkataramannagudem and addressed the students on 28.12.2017. NSS Activities NSS Volunteers of College of Horticulture, Anantharajupeta participated in ‘Clean and green’ programme on 30-12-2017. In this programme the college campus was cleaned and avenue planting was taken up. Research Banana skipper damage was reported at HRS, Anantharajupeta. The incidence was higher in variety bontha were as it was moderate in Grand Naine variety. Damage can be identified by observing the deserted leaf rolls on the plant and excreta which resembles papaya seed. After rearing in the laboratory the adult was noticed as Erionota torus. Scientists of Horticultural Research Station, Ambajipeta released the parasitoids of Rugose spiraling whitefly in affected gardens of Kalavalapalli village, West Godavari dist on 18.12.2017. The consignment of parasitoids of Rugose spiraling whitefly were obtained from TNAU, Tamilnadu. Extension Training Programmes Technical team of KVK, Periyavaram along with Dr. M. Kavita, Sr.Scientist (Pl. Path.) & Head participated in two days training programme on 22.12.2017 and 23.12.2017 at CRS, Petluru organized in collaboration with ATMA. As a part of training, farmers were trained on control for root rot and canker in acid lime and also maintenance of old acid lime orchards. Volume.III, Issue – 24 Dr.YSRHU e.Newsletter 15th —31st December, 2017 2 HRS, Venkataramannagudem organized one day farmers training programme on “Transfer of Technology in Betelvine” at Chintalapudi, Ponnur Mandal on 30.12.2017. Sri. Chiranjiv Choudhary, IFS, Vice- Chancellor was the chief guest. The inaugural session was presided over by Dr. J. Dilip Babu, Director of Research which was followed by technical sessions on betelvine by the scientists. Twenty trainees of Friends of coconut trees (FoCT) training organized by Noveeal Coconut Producer Company ltd, Amalapuram visited HRS, Ambajipeta on 28.12.2017. Scientists of HRS, Ambajipeta imparted training on scientific management aspects, quality seedlings production and plant protection measures in coconut. Dr.N.B.V.Chalapathi Rao, Senior Scientist (Ento.), HRS, Ambajipeta participated as a resource person in one day training programme on “Mango and Cashew nut” and delivered a lecture on “Insect pest management in mango and cashew nut” organized by the Department of Horticulture at Tuni on 30.12.2017. Dr.K.Ravindra Kumar, Scientist (Hort.), HRS, Kovvur attended one day farmers training programme on “Nursery registration and awareness meeting and Nursery Act-2010” as resource person at Kadiyapulanka on 23.12.2017 organized by Department of Horticulture and explained the importance of maintenance of mother plants, source of root stock, production of disease free planting material and maintenance of records. Sri.M.Ravindra Babu, Scientist (Hort.), HRS, Venkataramannagudem participated in training pro- gramme to farmers as resource person on “Cultivation practices in vegetable crops” at RHTI, Gopan- napalem, West Godavari district organized by Department of Horticultureon 28.12.2017. Vocational Training Programme KVK, Pandirimamidi Conducted a training programme on ‘Beekeeping’ to 25 members of sponsored by ITDA, Rampachoda- varam to 25 members to Bodlanka and GM valasa villages of Maredumilli mandalFrom 18.12.2017 to 23.12.2017. On 22.12.2017 Dr. S. Adarsha, Scientist (Ento.) conducted an exposure visit to Beekeeping Unit at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, V. R. Gudem and State bee keeping Extension Centre (SEBC), Vijayarai. Thirty days vocational training programme on ‘Cashew Grafting Techniques’ for 50no. tribal youth was conducted by KVK, Pandirimamidi. Participants were trained on cashew root stock production, preparation of scion material, precuring, method of grafting and aftercare. Sri A.S. Dinesh kumar, P.O., ITDA, Rampachodavaram and Dr. R.V.S.K. Reddy, Director of Extension attended the valedictory session and addressed the trainees. Sri.K.C.Bhanu Murthy, Scientist (Hort.) coordinated the training programme. Volume.III, Issue – 24 Dr.YSRHU e.Newsletter 15th —31st December, 2017 3 Cluster Front Line Demonstration Sri A.S.Dinesh Kumar, IAS, Project officer, ITDA Rampachodavaram along with Dr. R.V.S.K.Reddy, Director of Extension distributed inputs on 28.12.2017 to 10 tribal farmers of Borugubanda village of Rampachodavaram mandal Sponsored by ICAR-ATARI, Hyderabad under NMOOP – CFLD-Oilseeds. On 27.12.2017, Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist, (Pl. Path.) and Dr. V. Yugandhar, Research Associate (Hort.) have organized Front Line Demonstration on “Management of viral diseases in Chillies” at Sunkulagaripalli village. The scientists addressed the farmers about the control of sucking pest complex by placing yellow sticky traps in chillies field @ 10-12 cards/ acre. Distribution of Beekeeping units to trained Tribal Youth KVK, Pandirimamidi conducted four capacity building vocational training programmes (6 days duration) under RKVY with the support from ITDA, Rampachodavaram under SCS to TSP & MIDH 2017-18. Sri A.S. Dinesh Kumar, IAS, Project officer, ITDA Rampa- chodavaram distributed fifteen beekeeping units to the benefici- aries from seven villages of Rampachodavaram division in pres- ence of Dr. R.V.S.K.Reddy, Director of Extension on 28.12.2017. Dr.E.Karuna Sree, Senior scientist & Head along with Scientist (Ento.), KVK, Venkataramannagudem participated in grounding of 200 bee hives to 20 trainees under Mini Honey Mission Programme in collaboration with State Bee Keeping Extension Centre, KVIC, Vijayarai on 29.12.2017 and discussed with the Director, KVIC about extending the Apiary demonstrations to the trainees of KVK. Interaction with Farmers On 28.12.2017, Smt. R. Suneetha Research Associate (Home Science) and Dr. V. Nagarjuna, Research Associate (SS & AC) have visited Neelamapuram village of Duvvur mandal. The scientists interacted with farmers and explained about KVK activities and services and also highlighted the importance of Soil and Water analysis and fertil- izer application based on soil status. Praveen (A.O.) and Sharmila (A.E.O) also participated in the interaction. Awareness programme on Malnutrition On 30.12.2017, technical team of KVK, Vonipenta organized pretest session to the students of 8th, 9th and 10th class in MJP AP BC Welfare Residential school, Vonipenta. 30 samples and 30 control group on macro and micro nutrients (Vitamins, minerals), deficiencies and general things related to nutrition and health concepts. Raja Sekhar, Scientist (SS&AC), KVK, Pandirima- midi has monitored soil survey for land to land programme of river prone low lands of Devipatnam and Indukurpeta villages under ITDA, Rampachodavaram along with rehabilitation and resettlement team. Visited newly allotted lands for tribal farmers and observed physical condition of soil in order to assess land suitability for cultivation of agri/horti crops and collected soil samples on grid basis for soil fertility index. Diagnostic Visits Dr.R.Nagaraju, Senior Scientist (Hort.) & Head, HRS, Anantharajupeta along with Assistant Director of Horticulture –II, Kadapa, Horticulture Officer, Pulivendula and Sri.Y.Chandra Sekhar, Research associate (Pl. Path) conducted diagnostic field survey in Velamvaripalli, ulivendula mandal, Y.S.R. Kadapa dist. on 19.12.2017 to ascertain reasons for poor yields and early shooting in tissue culture banana var. Gudem, A.P., India *Corresponding author ABSTRACT The agriculture sector benefits more from mobile phones in the developing countries as it saves money, time and offers accurate advantage for farmers. The mobile phone system can be used to alert villagers about disease outbreaks and other important agricultural information. Many of the K e yw or ds farmers suffer from lack of up to date, accurate market price information because of their remote location, or simply because they don‘t know how and where to get trustworthy information. A study Advisory services, was undertaken to assess the potential and use of mobile phones by farmers. The study sample Mobile telephony, comprised of 120 farmers, selected randomly from the farmers visiting Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Respondents Periyavaram, SPSR Nellore District, A.P. The study indicates that 24.16 % farmers owned a mobile Farming for more than 3 years and 85.84 percent received information related to agriculture from farmers.
