Fortnight Focus  Events  Education  Research  Extension  General Events Seventh Inter collegiate sports, games, cultural and literary meet Seventh Inter collegiate sports, games, cultural and literary meet for the year 2017-18 was conducted at College of Horticulture, Venkataramannagudem from 17th to 20th December 2017. Sri.Chiranjiv Choudhary, IFS, Vice-chancellor graced the occasion as the chief guest. Dr. A. Sujatha, Dean of Student Affairs and Dr. M. Lakashmi Narayana Reddy, Dean of Horticulture along with uni- versity officers attended the function as guests of honour. Dr. K. Uma Jyothi, Associate Dean, College of Horticulture, Venkataramannagudem presided over the function. Students from four constituent colleges as well as private colleges affiliated to Dr.YSRHU have participated in the meet. Hon’ble Vice-chancellor distributed prizes to all the winners. Ms. Karuna Priya, CoH, Anantapuramu secured Dr.M.B.Nageswara Rao University Gold Medal in classical dance. Mr. P. Vamsi, CoH, Chinalataripi secured Dr.M.B.Nageswara Rao University Gold Medal in Mono action. Championship in games was bagged by the students of CoH, Venkataramannagudem where as the championship in athletics was bagged by the students of CoH, Anantharajupeta. Over all championship for sports and games was bagged by the students of CoH, Venkataramannagudem.

Sri.Chiranjiv Choudhary, IFS, Ex-officio Secretary to the Government of A.P & Vice-Chancellor (FAC) monitored the schemes implemented by Dept. of Horticulture and visited guava, coconut, oil palm, cocoa, papaya fields and poly houses in West Godavari district on 21.12.2017. In this visit Dr.R.V.S.K.Redddy Director of Extension, along with Scientists of KVK, Venkataramannagudem and Department officials interacted with the farmers and given technical suggestions.

Education

Ms. Rajyasree Choudhary, great grandniece of Late Sri Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose visited College of Horticulture, Venkataramannagudem and addressed the students on 28.12.2017.

NSS Activities

NSS Volunteers of College of Horticulture, Anantharajupeta participated in ‘Clean and green’ programme on 30-12-2017. In this programme the college campus was cleaned and avenue planting was taken up.

Research Banana skipper damage was reported at HRS, Anantharajupeta. The incidence was higher in variety bontha were as it was moderate in Grand Naine variety. Damage can be identified by observing the deserted leaf rolls on the plant and excreta which resembles papaya seed. After rearing in the laboratory the adult was noticed as Erionota torus.

Scientists of Horticultural Research Station, Ambajipeta released the parasitoids of Rugose spiraling whitefly in affected gardens of Kalavalapalli village, West Godavari dist on 18.12.2017. The consignment of parasitoids of Rugose spiraling whitefly were obtained from TNAU, Tamilnadu.

Extension

Training Programmes Technical team of KVK, Periyavaram along with Dr. M. Kavita, Sr.Scientist (Pl. Path.) & Head participated in two days training programme on 22.12.2017 and 23.12.2017 at CRS, Petluru organized in collaboration with ATMA. As a part of training, farmers were trained on control for root rot and canker in acid lime and also maintenance of old acid lime orchards. HRS, Venkataramannagudem organized one day farmers training programme on “Transfer of Technology in Betelvine” at Chintalapudi, Ponnur Mandal on 30.12.2017. Sri. Chiranjiv Choudhary, IFS, Vice- Chancellor was the chief guest. The inaugural session was presided over by Dr. J. Dilip Babu, Director of Research which was followed by technical sessions on betelvine by the scientists.

Twenty trainees of Friends of coconut trees (FoCT) training organized by Noveeal Coconut Producer Company ltd, Amalapuram visited HRS, Ambajipeta on 28.12.2017. Scientists of HRS, Ambajipeta imparted training on scientific management aspects, quality seedlings production and plant protection measures in coconut.

Dr.N.B.V.Chalapathi Rao, Senior Scientist (Ento.), HRS, Ambajipeta participated as a resource person in one day training programme on “Mango and Cashew nut” and delivered a lecture on “Insect pest management in mango and cashew nut” organized by the Department of Horticulture at Tuni on 30.12.2017.

Dr.K.Ravindra Kumar, Scientist (Hort.), HRS, Kovvur attended one day farmers training programme on “Nursery registration and awareness meeting and Nursery Act-2010” as resource person at Kadiyapulanka on 23.12.2017 organized by Department of Horticulture and explained the importance of maintenance of mother plants, source of root stock, production of disease free planting material and maintenance of records.

Sri.M.Ravindra Babu, Scientist (Hort.), HRS, Venkataramannagudem participated in training pro- gramme to farmers as resource person on “Cultivation practices in vegetable crops” at RHTI, Gopan- napalem, West Godavari district organized by Department of Horticultureon 28.12.2017.

Vocational Training Programme

KVK, Pandirimamidi Conducted a training programme on ‘Beekeeping’ to 25 members of sponsored by ITDA, Rampachoda- varam to 25 members to Bodlanka and GM valasa villages of Maredumilli mandalFrom 18.12.2017 to 23.12.2017. On 22.12.2017 Dr. S. Adarsha, Scientist (Ento.) conducted an exposure visit to Beekeeping Unit at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, V. R. Gudem and State bee keeping Extension Centre (SEBC), Vijayarai.

Thirty days vocational training programme on ‘Cashew Grafting Techniques’ for 50no. tribal youth was conducted by KVK, Pandirimamidi. Participants were trained on cashew root stock production, preparation of scion material, precuring, method of grafting and aftercare. Sri A.S. Dinesh kumar, P.O., ITDA, Rampachodavaram and Dr. R.V.S.K. Reddy, Director of Extension attended the valedictory session and addressed the trainees. Sri.K.C.Bhanu Murthy, Scientist (Hort.) coordinated the training programme.

Cluster Front Line Demonstration

Sri A.S.Dinesh Kumar, IAS, Project officer, ITDA Rampachodavaram along with Dr. R.V.S.K.Reddy, Director of Extension distributed inputs on 28.12.2017 to 10 tribal farmers of Borugubanda village of Rampachodavaram mandal Sponsored by ICAR-ATARI, Hyderabad under NMOOP – CFLD-Oilseeds. On 27.12.2017, Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist, (Pl. Path.) and Dr. V. Yugandhar, Research Associate (Hort.) have organized Front Line Demonstration on “Management of viral diseases in Chillies” at Sunkulagaripalli village. The scientists addressed the farmers about the control of sucking pest complex by placing yellow sticky traps in chillies field @ 10-12 cards/ acre.

Distribution of Beekeeping units to trained Tribal Youth

KVK, Pandirimamidi conducted four capacity building vocational training programmes (6 days duration) under RKVY with the support from ITDA, Rampachodavaram under SCS to TSP & MIDH 2017-18. Sri A.S. Dinesh Kumar, IAS, Project officer, ITDA Rampa- chodavaram distributed fifteen beekeeping units to the benefici- aries from seven villages of Rampachodavaram division in pres- ence of Dr. R.V.S.K.Reddy, Director of Extension on 28.12.2017. Dr.E.Karuna Sree, Senior scientist & Head along with Scientist (Ento.), KVK, Venkataramannagudem participated in grounding of 200 bee hives to 20 trainees under Mini Honey Mission Programme in collaboration with State Bee Keeping Extension Centre, KVIC, Vijayarai on 29.12.2017 and discussed with the Director, KVIC about extending the Apiary demonstrations to the trainees of KVK.

Interaction with Farmers

On 28.12.2017, Smt. R. Suneetha Research Associate (Home Science) and Dr. V. Nagarjuna, Research Associate (SS & AC) have visited Neelamapuram village of Duvvur mandal. The scientists interacted with farmers and explained about KVK activities and services and also highlighted the importance of Soil and Water analysis and fertil- izer application based on soil status. Praveen (A.O.) and Sharmila (A.E.O) also participated in the interaction.

Awareness programme on Malnutrition

On 30.12.2017, technical team of KVK, Vonipenta organized pretest session to the students of 8th, 9th and 10th class in MJP AP BC Welfare Residential school, Vonipenta. 30 samples and 30 control group on macro and micro nutrients (Vitamins, minerals), deficiencies and general things related to nutrition and health concepts.

Soil Survey On 15.12.2017, Sri.P. Raja Sekhar, Scientist (SS&AC), KVK, Pandirima- midi has monitored soil survey for land to land programme of river prone low lands of Devipatnam and Indukurpeta villages under ITDA, Rampachodavaram along with rehabilitation and resettlement team. Visited newly allotted lands for tribal farmers and observed physical condition of soil in order to assess land suitability for cultivation of agri/horti crops and collected soil samples on grid basis for soil fertility index. Diagnostic Visits

Dr.R.Nagaraju, Senior Scientist (Hort.) & Head, HRS, Anantharajupeta along with Assistant Director of Horticulture –II, Kadapa, Horticulture Officer, Pulivendula and Sri.Y.Chandra Sekhar, Research associate (Pl. Path) conducted diagnostic field survey in Velamvaripalli, ulivendula mandal, Y.S.R. Kadapa dist. on 19.12.2017 to ascertain reasons for poor yields and early shooting in tissue culture banana var. Grand Naine.

Technical team of KVK, Periyavaram conducted diagnostic field visit on 23.12.2017 in Gajulapalle village and observed the infestation of Spodop- tera litura in chilli and recommended to spray chloropyriphos @ 2.5 ml/l or novaluron @ 1.5 ml/l of water.

Technical team of KVK, Periyavaram conducted diagnostic field visit on 20.12.2017 in Kuppayapalem village and observed the infestation of partial stem parasite (Loranthus) in citrus crop and recommended to remove the infected parts and spray blitox @ 2gm/l of water.

Technical team of KVK, Periyavaram visited old acid lime orchard at Soma- sanigunta village of Mandal on 16.12.2017 and suggested the farmer to go for spray of plant growth regulators like 2,4-D@ 10ppm and spray of 1% potassium nitrate to control fruit and flower drop in acid lime.

Dr. L.Ranjith Kumar, Scientist (Ento.), KVK, Periyavaram visited brinjal field at Gajulapalli village of Venkatagiri mandal on 16.12.2017 and observed shoot and fruit borer infestation and suggested the farmer for installation of pheromone traps @ 4-5/acre along with application of chloran- traniliprole 18.5% SC @ 0.3 ml/l or spinosad 45 sc @ 0.3ml/l as alternate sub- sequent sprays @ 15 days interval.

Dr. L.Ranjith Kumar, Scientist (Ento.), KVK, Periyavaram visited chilli field infested with thrips at Maratapalli village of Venkatagiri mandal on 16.12.2017 and suggested the farmer to spray fipronil 5% SC @ 1ml/l or acetamaprid 20 SP @ 1g/l @ 15 days interval.

Technical team of KVK, Periyavaram visited chilli field at Mannegunta village of Venkatagiri mandal on 16.12.2017 and suggested them about the easy planter equipment for efficient and fast planting of chilli under plastic mulch and also informed them about new varieties of chili and Colacasia.

On 14.12.17 and 16.12.17 Dr. S. Adarsha Scientist (Ento.) and P. Raja sekhar Scientist (SS&AC), KVK, Pandirimamidi demonstrated management of T- mosquito by spraying neem oil @ 5ml/l and to control micronutrient deficiencies micronutrient mix @ 5 g/l at new flush stage at Pandirimamidi Village of Rampachodavaram mandal and Pedagiddada village of Maredumilli mandal.

Dr. M. Tagore Naik Scientist (Hort.) visited Amla growing forest area at Narayanapuram and ob- served the termites, stem borers, bark eating caterpillars and galls and given the suitable remedial management practices.

Sri.G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist, (Pl. Path.) along with technical team of KVK, Periyavaram visited cabbage field on 19.12.2017 for diagnosis of pests and diseases at Uppuguntupalli village of Mydukur mandal. The scientists identified leaf eating caterpillar and suggested suitable reme- dial measures like spraying of chlorpyriphos @ 2.5 ml/l of water.

Sri.G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist, (Pl. Path.) along with technical team of KVK, Periyavaram visited banana field on 20.12.2017 for diagnosis of pests and diseases at Gililla village of Duvvur mandal. The scientist ad- dressed bunch management practices in banana like covering bunch with boot leaf/flag leaf, bunch covers, bunch feeding and application of micro nutrients.

Sri.G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist, (Pl. Path.) and Dr. V. Yugandhar, Research Associate (Hort.) have visited Chilli field on 27.12.2017 for diagnosis of pests and diseases at Sunkulagaripalli village of Mydukurmandal. The scientist identified cercospora leaf spot and recommended Carben- dazim@ 1g/l water and [email protected] g/l water.

Dr.V.Deepthi, Scientist (Agril Extn.), KVK, Venkataramannagudem con- ducted diagnostic field visit in tomato on 22.12.2017 and observed early blight and recommended to spray propiconazole@ 1ml/l of water.

Dr.N.B.V.Chalapathi Rao, Senior Scientist (Ento.), HRS, Ambajipeta carried out field diagnostic visit to cocoa gardens along with Horticulture officer at Ainavalli village East Godavari district on 26.12.2017.

Dr.N.B.V.Chalapathi Rao, Senior Scientist (Ento.), HRS, Ambajipeta carried out field diagnostic visit to Kadiyapulanka and Pottilanka villages of East Godavari district for spiraling rugose whitefly affected coconut garden and suggested its control measures to the farmers on 29.12.2017. Dr.R.Nagaraju, Sr.Scientist (Hort) & Head, HRS, Anantharajupeta along with Smt.T.Naglakshmi, Scientist (Pl.Path), Dr.Y.Sharat Kumar Reddy, Scientist (Pl.Phy) and Sri. Y. Chandrasekhar, Scientist (Pl. Path), HRS, Anantharajupeta visited papaya field in Tungavaripalli, Rly.Kodur mandal on 28.12.2017 and noticed severe slug damage on freshly planted papaya seedlings of 40 days old and suggested suitable control measures.

General Visitors

Dr. N. Balaji, Hon’ble member, Board of Management, Dr.YSRHU visited HRS, Ambajipeta and interacted with scientists regarding ongoing research activities and also visited the experimental plots, bio control lab on 23.12.2017.

Exposure Visits

Students of 3rd year B.Sc (Agri) of S.V. Agricultural College, Tirupati, visited College of Horticulture and HRS, Anantharajupeta along with teaching staff on 23.12.2017. Scientists of HRS explained about research activities and ongoing research projects of the station and pest and disease management. Dr. M. Ramakrishna, Associate Dean explained about the protected structures and propagation of fruit plants at commercial nursery.

Agricultural College, Mahanandi, ANGRAU students visited HRS, Mahanandi on 29.12.2017 as a part of educational tour. During their visit Dr.M. Tagore Naik, Scientist (Hort.) explained them about the research station activities.

Thirty farmers from Tadepalligudem of West Godavari district visited HRS, Ambajipeta on 29.12.2017 as part of exposure visit and were briefed about the production and protection technologies of coconut, cocoa and high density cropping systems by the scientists concerned for getting sus- tained yields and income.

Dr. M. Kavitha, Officer –In charge, KVK, Periyavaram visited mushroom production unit in Naidupet on 18.12.2017 and identified the fungal con- taminated beds in the cultivation room.

Students of A.P.T.W.R.Junior College, Rampachodavaram visited KVK, Pandirimamidi on 23.12.2017. Scientists of KVK imparted basic knowl- edge about soil, its importance in relation to plant growth, beekeeping and nursery management respectively. Sri Ravi, APO, ITDA, Rampacho- davaram and 65 students attended the program.

Human Resource Development

Smt. D. Aparna, Scientist (Hort.) attended 21 days training programme on” Exploitation and conser- vation of plant genetic resources in major, minor and underexploited fruits” at College of Horticul- ture, Musuru, Yelachally, Karnataka from 4th to 24th December, 2017. Dr. K.Sesha Kiran, Asst Prof (Pl. Path.), CoH, Venkataramannagudem at- tended 21 days training programme on “ Next Generation Sequencing and its applications in crop sciences” from 1st to 21st December, 2017 held at National Research Centre for plant biotechnology, New Delhi.

Meetings Dr. P.Manjari, Scientist (Veterinary Science), KVK, Periyavaram at- tended and presented paper in XXVI Annual conference of SAPI and National Symposium on “Physiological innovations to forecast the Im- pact of Climate change and to evolve Strategies for Sustainable Live- stock Production-SAPICON-2017” conducted by Karnataka Veterinary Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar from 22nd-23rd De- cember, 2017. Dr. K.T. Venkataramana and Dr. L. Mukunda lakshmi, attended “World Orange Festival” organized by ICAR - Central Citrus Research Institute (CCRI) at Nagpur from 16th to 18th December, 2017 and Dr. K.T. Venkataramana delivered a lecture on " Sweet orange industry of South specially An- dhra Pradesh" on 18.12.2017.

Dr. B. V. K. Bhagawan, Principal Scientist (Hort.) & Head and Dr. A. Snehalatha Rani, Scientist (Pl. Path.), HRS, Kovvur participated in the Quinquennial Review Team meeting of AICRP on Banana organized at National Research Centre for Banana on 19th and 20th of December, 2017 and presented the work pertaining to HRS, Kovvur.

Dr. A. Snehalatha Rani, Scientist (Pl. Path.), HRS, Kovvur participated in the ICAR – Bioversity Inter- national Collaborative project on “ Management and mitigation of the spread of Tropical Race 4 of Fusarium wilt in banana” jointly organized by Bioversity International and ICAR-NRCB at UHS, Ben- galuru on 28.12.2017.

Dr.P.Rama Devi, (Pl.Path) & Head, HRS, V.R.Gudem attended workshop on “Cultivation Practices of Medicinal Plants and Marketing Strategies” at P.M.R.C. Building, ITDA, Rampachodavaram on 18.12.2017 organized by A.P. Medicinal & Aromatic Plants Board, Vijayawada.

Dr.E.Karunasree Senior Scientist & Head, KVK, Venkataramannagudem participated in the inaugural function of three days entrepreneurship development training programme on 21.12.2017 at ITDA, K. Ramachandrapuram from 19th to 21st December, 2017 and delivered a lecture on “Enterprises related to Agriculture and Horticulture Sec- tors” . Radio Programmes
