Dr. YSRHU E-News Letter Fortnightly E.Newsletter of Dr.Y.S.R.Horticultural University Dr. YSRHU e-News letter Fortnightly e.Newsletter of Dr.Y.S.R.Horticultural University Volume.IV, Issue – 5 Dr.YSRHU e.Newsletter 1st —15th March, 2018 Fortnight Focus Events Education Research Extension General Events HRS, T.Venkupalem started functioning Horticultural Research Station, T.Venkupalem started functioning on 11.03.2017 and was opened in the building of AMC, Anakapalli by Sri Chiranjiv Choudhary, Hon’ble Vice- Chancellor (FAC) & Ex-officio Secretary of Govt. of A.P, Sri.Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao, Hon’ble MP, Anakapalli, Sri Peela Govinda Satyanarayana, Hon’ble Member of Board of Management, Dr.YSRHU & MLA, Anakapalli. Dr.B.Srinivasulu, Registrar, Dr.J.Dilip Babu, Director of Research Dr. B.V.K.Bhagawan, Zonal Research Head, Coastal Zone-I and Dr.L.Naram Naidu, Zonal Research Head, Coastal Zone-II have attended the programme. Kisan Mela along with exhibition was organized on this occasion by the University, Department of Horticulture, RARS-Anakapalli, Department of Agriculture and APMIP. Officials of allied departments and about 700 farmers from various parts of Visakhapatnam district participated in the programme. Research and Extension Council Meeting Ninth Research and Extension Council Meeting was held at University Head Quarters, Venkataramannagudem on 05.03.2018. REC Members comprising of Sri.Bonam Nages- wara Rao and Sri.K.Popuri Siva Ramakrishna, Hon’ble Mem- bers of Board of Management, Dr.YSRHU, progressive farm- ers, expert members, entrepreneurs of agri based industries, nurserymen, representatives from Horticulture Department discussed about the problems and new technological inter- ventions required in various horticultural crops. International Women's Day International Womens’ day was celebrated at Administra- tive Office and constituent colleges, Research Stations and KVKs of the University on 08.03.2018. All the university officers and staff members have participated in a meeting organized at Administrative office and Md.Israth Fathima, Magistrate, Tadepalligudem was the chief guest who has spoken about role of women in the society and the law in force against the women harassment. PMR charitable trust, Tadepalligudem conducted games to the girls students. Girl students of CoH, Venkataramannagudem bagged second prize in throw ball and re- ceived certificates from Sri.P.Manikyala Rao, MLA, Tadepal- ligudem. Dr. K. Uma Jyothi, Associate Dean, CoH, VRGudem and Dr.V.Sudhavani, Asst prof. (Hort) were felicitated by Sri.P. Manikyala Rao, MLA and founder of PMR Charitable trust on the eve of International Womens’ day on 10.03.2018. Intercollegiate Sports, Games, Cultural and Literary meet for Horticultural Polytechnics Sixth Intercollegiate Sports, Games, Cultural and Literary meet for the year 2017-18 was organised from 11.03.2018 to 13.03.2018 at SSPG Horticulture Polytechnic, Madakasira. Six Horticultural Polytechnic colleges participated in this meet. SSPG Horticultural Polytechnic, Madakasira won the Over all Championship. Dr. A. Sujatha, DSA attended as the chief guest for inaugural function on 11.03.2018. Dr, M. Lakshminarayana Reddy, Dean of Horticulture and Dr. M. Ramakrishna, Associate Dean, CoH, Ananthrajupeta attended as guests of honour for the valedictory function on 13.03.2018. Education Exposure Visit Students of Final year B.Sc (Hons) Horticulture and M.Sc were taken on an exposure visit to Govt. Horticulture Nurseries, Srikalahasthi, Cold storage units located near Renigunta and Krishnapatnam port on 03.03.2018 and were exposed to technolo- gies involved in cold storage of apples, oranges, dragon fruit, kiwi, longon and plums imported from different countries. Rama Krishna, Associate Dean, College of Horticulture, Anantharajupeta, participated in an exhibition cum training programme to the farmers at Alturpadu, Periyavaram, on 03.03.2018 and T. Kampalli, Rly Koduru on 09.03.2018 organised by the final year B. Sc (Hons.) Horticulture students of College of Horticulture, Anantharajupeta under the programme of Rural Horticultural Work Experience Programme (RHWEP). Students shared their experiences, practical knowledge gained during the programme. Interaction with the farmers was organized about the important production aspects in horticultural crops. Dr.P.Subbaramamma, Asst Prof (Pl.Phy) and Associate Dean’s representative for RHWEP, participated in Rythu sadassu programme conducted at Prakasaraopalem village on 01.03.2018. Dr. M.L.N. Reddy, Dean of Horticulture, Dr. K. Uma Jyothi, Associate Dean, CoH, V.R.Gudem and Dr. E. Karuna Sree, Programme coordinator, KVK, V.R.Gudem visited the exhibition arranged by the RHWEP students. RHWEP students attached to Cashew research station, Bapatla organized Rythu Sadassu on 09.03.2018 at Bethapudi, Guntur dist. Dr.K.Seshakiran, Asst Professor convened the meeting and suggested the recommended practices for root rot, wilt in jasmine, crossandra and major diseases of brinjal, chilli, bhendi. Dr. M.L.N. Reddy, Dean of Horticulture attended as chief guest along with Sri K.Uma Maheswara Rao. Scientist (Hort) & Head. A Rythusadassu was organized by RHWEP students allotted to KVK, Venkataramannagudem at Kommugudem village on 07.03.2018. Dr.R.V.S.K Reddy, Director of Extension, Dr.K.Uma Jyothi, Associate Dean, Dr.Subbaramamma, Associate professor, CoH, Venkataramannagudem, Dr. V.Deepthi, scientist (Agri. Extn.), Sri G.Shali Raju, Scientist (Ento.), KVK, Venkataramanna- gudem. An exhibition was arranged and students exhibited dif- ferent live specimens of pest and diseases in fruits, vegetables and shared their experiences during the programme. A play was enacted by the students on the im- portance of integrated pest management in various crops. Extension Soil Survey On 10.03.2018, technical team of KVK, Vonipenta have collected soil samples from farmer’s fields at Jillala village of Duvvur mandal. The scientists explained the importance of Soil and water analysis, soil health cards and also demonstrated the soil sample collection proce- dure. Volume.IV, Issue – 5 Dr.YSRHU e.Newsletter 1st —15th March, 2018 3 A preliminary survey was conducted by Joint Inspection Team on 03.03.2018 for implementation of Agriculture, Horticulture and Irrigation facilities in the rehabilitation lands which were allotted to the tribal beneficiaries under Polavaram Irrigation Project. Dur- ing the visit, P Raja Sekhar, Scientist (SS & AC) from KVK, Pandiri- mamidi has monitored soil survey in newly allotted lands and observed physical condition of soil inorder to assess land suitability for cultivation of agri/horti crops followed by soil sample collection on grid basis in 12 villages of Etapaka mandal, Chintoor. Training Programmes HRS, Anantapuramu organized one day Farmers Training Programme on “Tamarind and other dryland fruit crops cultivation aspects” on 14.03.2018. Officers of Department of Horticulture, Project Director, APMIP, and Assistant Project Director, APMIP, Anantapuramu have participated in the programme. Dr. B. Srinivasulu, Senior Scientist & Head explained the importance of arid horticulture to the farmers. On 05.03.2018, KVK, Venkataramannagudem conducted one day awareness programme on management of spiraling whitefly in collaboration with Department of Horticulture at Kommugudem village. Sri.G.Shali Raju, Scientist (Ento.) demonstrated the method of installation of yellow sticky traps in spiraling whitefly affected orchards in addition to the co-ordination of this programme. Dr.E.Padma, Scientist (Hort.), HRS, Ambajipeta participated in a meeting at Vanapalli village organized by Department of Horticulture under ‘Replanting & Rejuvenation scheme on coconut’ and explained about the steps to be taken while replanting coconut trees on 12.03.2018. Dr.N.B.V.Chalapathi Rao, Senior Scientist (Ent.) and Dr.E.Padma, Scientist (Hort.), HRS, Ambajipeta participated in an awareness meet- ing on Rugose spiralling whitefly at Kalavalapalli village organized by Department of Horticulture and explained the management measures of the invasive pest to the farmers along with a field visit on 15.03.2018. Dr.P.Rama Devi, Scientist (Pl. Path) & Head, D. Aparna, Scientist (Hort.) and B .Swathi, Research Associate (Ento.), HRS, Venkataramanna- gudem participated as resource persons and delivered lectures on “Betelvine cultivation, post harvest management, pests and diseases” during betelvine farmers exposure visit from Telangana to KVK, Venkataramannagudem, on 08.03.2018. Dr.E.Padma, Scientist (Hort.), HRS, Ambajipeta has attended District level coordination committee meeting at ARS, Peddapuram conducted by DAATTC, Kakinada and delivered a lecture on “Rugose spiralling whitefly and cultivation of intercrops in coconut gardens” on 09.03.2018. On 14.03.2018, Dr. S. Adarsha Scientist (Ento.), Miss Sri Vidya Rani. N, Scientist (Extn.), KVK, Pandirimamidi addressed the farmers on ‘Importance of cashew cultivation’ during International Womens’ Day celebrations organised by Agri Business System International organization at Addateegala and distributed prizes to winners of various competitions conducted

Gudem, A.P., India *Corresponding author ABSTRACT The agriculture sector benefits more from mobile phones in the developing countries as it saves money, time and offers accurate advantage for farmers. The mobile phone system can be used to alert villagers about disease outbreaks and other important agricultural information. Many of the K e yw or ds farmers suffer from lack of up to date, accurate market price information because of their remote location, or simply because they don‘t know how and where to get trustworthy information. A study Advisory services, was undertaken to assess the potential and use of mobile phones by farmers. The study sample Mobile telephony, comprised of 120 farmers, selected randomly from the farmers visiting Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Respondents Periyavaram, SPSR Nellore District, A.P. The study indicates that 24.16 % farmers owned a mobile Farming for more than 3 years and 85.84 percent received information related to agriculture from farmers.
