Events New Research Station Hon'ble Chief Minister, Sri Y.S.Jagan Mohan Reddy garu along with Sri K.Kannababu garu, Hon'ble Minister, Ag- riculture & Cooperation, Govt. of A.P has laid the foun- dation stone for the new Banana Research Station under Dr. YSRHU at Venkatampalli village in Pulivendula man- dal, YSR district on 08.07.2019 in the august presence of Sri. Chiranjiv Choudhary, IFS, Vice-Chancellor, Commis- sioner of Horticulture & Ex-officio Secretary to Govt of A.P and university officers. An exhibition with live specimens of different varieties and latest tech- nologies of Dr.YSRHU was arranged on the eve of 1st Rytudinotsavam at Jamma- lamadugu, YSR district.

Third Convocation of Dr.YSRHU The 3rd Convocation of Dr.Y.S.R Horticultural University was held on 01.07.2019 at University Head Quarters, Venkataramannagudem. Sri Chiranjiv Choudhary, IFS, Vice- Chancellor, Commissioner of Horticulture & Ex-officio Secretary to Govt. of A.P gave a report on the progress made in the university with regard to Education, Research and Extension. Dr.H.P.Singh, Former Deputy Director Gen- eral (Horticulture), ICAR attended the function as chief guest and delivered his message in the presence of Sri Chiranjiv Choudhary, IFS, Vice-Chancellor, Commissioner of Horticulture & Ex-officio Secretary to Govt. of A.P, Members of the Board of Management, Academic Council and University officers. In this convocation 286 nos. B.Sc (Hons.) Horticulture, 83 nos. M.Sc (Horticulture) and 6 nos. Ph.D students were awarded with degrees.

Y.S.R. Rytudinotsavam KVK, Venkataramannagudem organised ‘YSR Rytudinot- savam’ in collaboration with Department of Agriculture on the eve of birth anniversary of Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhar Reddy, former Chief minister of Andhra Pradesh on 08.07.2019. Sri. Kottu Satya Narayana garu, Hon’ble MLA, constituency attended as chief guest and addressed the farmers. University officers participated in this program gave an account on the progress made after the establishment of the university. The chief guest along with University officers and farmers visited exhibition and the scientists explained about the new technologies, varieties developed to the farming community. About 800 farmers along with officers of line departments have participated in the programme.

On 08.07.2019, KVK, Pandirimamidi participated and arranged an exhibition in ‘YSR Rytudinotsavam’ program conducted in collaboration with Department of Agriculture, Rampachodavaram division. Smt. N. Dhanalakshmi garu, Hon’ble MLA, Rampachodavaram constituency participated as chief guest. Officers from Department of Horticulture & Agriculture and 325 farmers participated in the programme.

On 08.07.2019, Smt. Pamula Pushpasreevani garu, Deputy Chief Minister & Hon’ble Minister of Tribal Welfare, Govt. of A.P, Dr. V. Vinod Kumar, IAS, Project Officer, ITDA, Parvathipuram participated as chief guests in ‘Rytudinotsavam’ programme at CoH, Parvathipuram and released a poster on ‘Insurance of Agricultural and Horticultural crops’ organized in collaboration with Department of Agriculture, Vizianagaram Dist.

Board of Faculty Meetings 16th Board of Faculty of UG Studies meeting was conducted on 05.07.2019 at University Campus, Venkataramannagudem un- der the chairmanship of Dr.M. Lakshminarayana Reddy, Dean of Horticulture. Expert members Dr.V.B.Patel, Principal Scien- tist, Division of Fruits & Horticultural Technology, ICAR, IARI, New Delhi, Dr.V.Lakshmanan, Professor & Head, HC&RI, Na- valur, Kuttapattu, Trichy, Tamil Nadu and other members of UG Faculty Board gave their valuable inputs. 16th Board of Faculty of PG Studies meeting was conducted on 05.07.2019 at University Campus, Venkataramannagudem under the chairmanship of Dr.D.Srihari, Dean of PG Studies. Expert member Dr.A.Manohar Rao, Professor & University Head, Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture, PJTSAU, Hyderabad and other members of PG Faculty board gave their valuable inputs. Academic Council Meeting 23rd Academic Council Meeting was conducted on 15.07.2019 at University Campus, Venkataramannagudem under the chairmanship of Sri Chiranjiv Choudhary, IFS, Vice-Chancellor, Dr.YSRHU & Ex-Officio Secretary to Gov- ernment of A.P. Dr.B.Srinivasulu, Registrar & Member Sec- retary, Expert member, Dr.B.Satyanarayana Reddy, Retd. Director of Education, UHS, Bagalkot, Director of Research, UAHS, Shivamogga and Dr.S.K.Sarkar, Professor & Head (Fruits) & Former Registrar, BCKV, Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Mohanpur Dist. Nadia, West Bengal and other members of Academic Council gave their valuable inputs. Education Exposure Visits An exposure visit to 2nd B.Sc (Hons.) Horticulture students of CoH, Venkataramannagudem was conducted to Kadiyam nurseries to identify and to know utilization of different ornamentals in garden- ing as a part of course no.FCLS 2.3.2 Ornamental Horticulture on 10.07.2019. A Field trip was conducted to 2nd year B.Sc.(Hons.) Horticulture students of CoH, Venkataramannagudem to Koyyalagudem vil- lage as a part of Educational tour on 04.07.2019. The farmer is growing lemon grass and palmarosa in about 30 acres and hav- ing steam distillation unit for extraction of essential oil. Dr.E. Padma, Associate Professor and Dr.Ranjith, Teaching Associate coordinated the programme. Research

Inflorescence in datepalm was artificially pollinated in variety SONA-101 at HRS, Venkataramannagudem. The fruits are trans- formed from ‘Khalal’ stage to “Rutab” stage. Most of the fruits at “Rutab” stage are dropped before reaching the “Tamar” stage. The TSS in the range of 32-37 0Brix at “Rutab’’ stage was ob- served. Extension Training Programmes

On 11.07.2019, KVK, Venkataramannagudem conducted one day training programme with the support of Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) to FPO vegetable farm- ers on “Improved cultivation practices, IPM modules in vegetables” at M. Nagulapalli. Dr. R.V.S.K. Reddy, Director of Extension attended as chief guest and discussed about the problems in vegetable cultivation with farmers. Dr. E. Ka- runa Sree, Principal Scientist & Head, KVK, Venkataramannagudem, Dr. K. Venkata Subbaiah, Scien- tist (Hort.) and Sri. G. Shali raju, Scientist (Ento.) attended as resource persons and organisers. The scientists explained about improved cultivation practices and IPM practices in vegetables.

On 09.07.2019, KVK, Pandirimamidi has provided Rubber Tapping and Processing Inputs to “Girijana Rubber Raithu Sankshema Sangham” consisting of 73 tribal farmers formed by Rubber Board of at Pandirimamidi Kota village of Maredumilli mandal under Tribal Sub-Plan-2018. Smt. N.Dhanalaxmi, MLA, Rampachodavaram has inaugurated the programme as chief guest and Dr.R.V.S.K.Reddy, Director of Extension addressed the rubber growing farmers regarding importance and scope of rubber plan- tations in suitable areas of Maredumilli mandal and to utilize the distributed inputs such as Jebong, Spouts, Cups, Alluminium utensils, rubber rollers and smoke chamber effectively during tapping season i.e. July to January in order to get profitable yields. Dr. B.V.K.Bhagavan, Principal Scientist (Hort.) & Head, Dr. K. Mamatha, Sr.Scientist (Hort.), Dr. R. Naga Lakshmi, Scientist (Hort.), Dr. K. RavindraKumar, Scientist (Hort.) Dr. Ch. Kishore kumar, Scientist (Pl. Path.), HRS, participated in an awareness programme on “Turmeric and Ginger culti- vation” at HRS, Kovvur on 02.7.2019 organized by Depart- ment of Horticulture. Horticultural officers and Assistant Di- rector of Horticulture, other department officials and farmers from Guntur and West Godavari dis- tricts participated in the programme. A general awareness about poly house management, cultiva- tion of crops and nematode management was created successfully among all the participants. Scientists, HRS, Anantharajupeta conducted a training pro- gramme on “INM and IPM in Mango Cultivation” under AICRP- on Fruits project at KR Kandriga village in Kodur division on 11.07.2019. Dr. R. Nagaraju, Principal Scientist (Hort) & Head, Dr. T. Naga lakshmi Scientist, (Pl. Path.) and Dr. Y.S.Sharat Kumar Reddy, Scientist (Pl. Physiology) and Renuka Prasad, Horticultural Officer, Kodur Division participated in the training programme and delivered lectures on Pruning methods, INM and IPM and Calendar of operations in mango.

On 04.07.2019, KVK Venkataramannagudem conducted a training program on “Scientific management practices in sheep and goat rearing” to the sheep and goat rearers at Doramamidi village, But- taigudem mandal under ARYA project. Dr.T.Vijaya Nirmala, Scien- tist (Veterinary Science) and Dr.A.Devivaraprasad Reddy, Scien- tist (Fishery Science) coordinated the programme.

On 09.07.2019, KVK, Venkataramannagudem initiated training pro- gram on “Poultry farm and Hatchery management” to Veterinary Assistants of Veterinary Polytechnic College, SVVU, Venkataraman- nagudem from 09.07.2019 to 25.07.2019. Dr.T.Vijaya Nirmala, Sci- entist (Veterinary Science) coordinated the programme.

Dr.N.B.V.Chalapathi Rao, Principal Scientist (Ento.), HRS, Amba- jipeta participated in Rythu Sadassu organized by Department of Horticulture at Rajahmundry and explained about the pest and disease management in coconut on 08.07.2019.

MRS, Nuzvid conducted a farmers training programme on ‘Pruning and fertilizer application’ on 02.07.2019. Dr. R. Rajyalakshmi, Sr.Scientist (Hort.) & Head, Dr. B.K.M. Lakshmi, Sr.Scientist (Pl. Path.), Dr. G. Sravanthi, Scientist (Ento.), coordinated the programme. HEO and MPEO’s participated in the programme.

Dr.G.Ramanandam, Principal Scientist, (Hort.) and Dr.N.B.V.Chalapathi Rao, Principal Scientist (Ento.), HRS, Ambajipeta participated in All India Coconut Farmers meeting at Bandarulanka organized by Baratiya Kisan Sangh, Ambajipeta and briefed about the production technologies of coconut to farmers on 09.07.2019.

Dr. M.Raja Naik, Associate Professor (Hort.), CoH, Anantharajupeta attended a training program as a resource person for the input deal- ers under DAESI program on “Advanced production technology of marigold, chrysanthemum and crossandra” at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Tirupati on Sunday i.e. 14.07.2019.

On 04.07.2019, KVK, Vonipenta conducted an off campus training programme on “Integrated crop management in Turmeric” at Set- tivari Palli village of Mydukur mandal. Scientists explained about nursery management, Seed treatment, varieties, Raised bed sys- tem of cultivation, fertilizer and water management, pest and dis- ease management and other cultural practices to be followed for getting good quality and higher rhizome yields in turmeric. Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path.) & Head and Dr. V. Yugandhar, Research Associate (Hort.) coordinated the programme.

On 05.07.2019. Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path.) & Head, KVK, Vonipenta has attended a training programme as resource per- son organized by APMIP, Kadapa at Sunkulagari palli village of My- dukur mandal. Explained about the importance of drip irrigation and its management, fertigation schedules to be followed in differ- ent horticultural crops along with pests and disease management.

On 15.07.2019, Smt.R.Suneetha, Research Associate, (Home science) and Sri E Ravi Goud, Research Associate (Extension), KVK, Vonipenta conducted off campus training programme on ‘Nutri-garden imple- mentation’ at Pappanapalli village of Mydukur mandal. Scientist ex- plained about different designs of nutri-gardens and its uses and also explained about food adulteration, through snake and ladder visual aid.

Front Line Demonstrations

KVK, Periyavaram has distributed black gram seed of TBG-104 bought from RARS Tirupati as a part of Cluster Front Line Demonstra- tion on Pulses to Petluru farmers on 12.07.2019. Ms. S.M.Sailaja, Re- search Associate (Hort.) coordinated the programme.

KVK, Venkataramannagudem initiated CFLD on red gram variety ‘LRG-52’ in Srinivasapuram village of mandal on 15.07.2019 and explained the package of practices and pest and disease management aspects in redgram. collected soil samples from identified farmers fields. Dr.V.Deepthi, scientist (Agricultural Exten- sion) coordinated the programme.

On 01.07.2019, KVK, Pandirimamidi provided new paddy variety seed MTU-1153 (Chandra) and MTU-1156 (Tarangini) to 16 tribal farmers of I.Polavaram, Bandapalli, Borugubanda, Sokulagudem and Tungamadugula villages of Rampachodavaram division and Kunduluru village of Chintur division to conduct Front Line Demon- strations under Tribal Sub Plan-2019-20. P. Raja Sekhar, Scientist (SS&AC) coordinated the programme. Method Demonstrations

On 05.07.2019, Scientists of KVK, Pandirimamidi conducted method demonstration on use of rhizobium in pulses at Kunduluru village of V.R.Puram mandal. Scientists explained about impor- tance, use of rhizobium and method of application and provided critical inputs like Redgram seed -3kg, Rhizobium -1 kg to 20 beneficiaries under Demonstration of Redgram Var. LRG 52 (CFLD Pulses 2019-20). Dr.S.Adarsha, Scientist (Ento.) and Sri P.Raja Sekhar, Scientist (SS&AC) coordi- nated the programme.

Soil Sampling

On 05.07.2019 P. Raja Sekhar, Scientist (SS & AC) and Dr. Adarsha (Ento.), KVK, Pandirimamidi visited adopted village Kunduluru for soil sampling in identified beneficiary farmer’s fields prior to imple- mentation of on-farm trials and front line demonstrations on paddy and pulses. Scientists have conducted demonstration on method of composite soil sampling and location specific soil sample collection in field crops based on area and topography and also rain water conservation measures in farm ponds and extension of catchment based on topography and direction of water flow was explained to the tribal farmers in the village.

Diagnostic Visits

Dr. T. Naga Lakshmi Scientist (Pl. Path.) and Dr. Y. Sharat Kumar Reddy, Sci- entist (Pl. Physiology), HRS, Anantharajupeta conducted field visit in Oba- napalli village in Guava and papaya fields on 05.07.2019. In two year old guava (Taiwan Pink) orchard sudden wilting of plants was observed due to severe infestation of root knot nematode . In papaya field, severe deformity due to Leaf curl was observed and moderate (25-%) incidence of papaya ring spot virus was recorded.

On 01.07.2019, Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path.) & Head and Dr.V. Yugandhar, Research Associate (Hort.), KVK, Vonipenta visited mango and guava fields at Nagasanipalli village of Khajipeta mandal and Tuvvapalli village of Mydukur mandal respectively. The scien- tists indentified diseases and gave suggestions for remedies.

Dr.A.Devivaraprasad Reddy, Scientist (Fishery Science), and Dr. T. Vijaya Nirmala, Scientist (Veterinary Science), KVK, Venkataraman- nagudem visited the fish farm during the partial harvesting at Thelikicherla and observed the growth performance of Jayanthi rohu and Amur common carp under the NFDB pilot scale study on 15.07.2019.

On 07.11.2017, P. Raja Sekhar, Scientist (SS&AC) and Dr. S. Adar- sha, Scientist (Ento.), KVK, Pandirimamidi visited Osmanabadi goats and Rajashree poultry birds which were provided to tribal farmers of I.Polavaram and Kunduluru villages under TSP to di- agnose the growth performance. Scientists recorded the data re- garding birth rate and multiplication of goat, body weight and suggested mineral feed supplements, sanitation measures to be followed in rainy season, deworming and vaccination to be done in goat and poultry for the good health.

Ms. S.M.Sailaja, Research Associate (Hort.) and Dr. M.Kavitha, officer-Incharge, KVK, Periyavaram conducted diagnostic visit to bitter gourd fields at Chavali village of Mandal on 11.07.2019 and suggested for installation of sticky traps for the control of sucking pests to control viral diseases and also sug- gested to spray dimethoate @ 2ml/l water.

Mr. D. Vinod Naik, Research Associate ( Agril. Extension), KVK, Peri- yavaram visited groundnut fields in Yathaluru village on 12.07.2019 and noticed incidence of stem rot disease and recommended seed treatment with Trichoderma viride @ 4g/kg seed and soil application @2.5 kg/ha multiplied in FYM.

04.07.2019, Dr.B.Govinda Rajulu, Principal Scientist (Pl. Path.). CRS, Petlur and Department of Horticulture officials visited acid lime orchards in Jangareddygudem, mandals of West Godavari dt. and diagnosed bacterial canker, root rots and diplodia gummosis and suggested IDM schedule for the manage- ment of diseases.

D. Rakshith Roshan, Research Associate (Ento.) and B. Srilakshmi Ramani, SRF, (Ento.), HRS, Ambajipeta carried out field diagnostic visit to previously rugose spiralling whitefly affected coconut gar- dens in Pulltikurru village of Ambajipeta mandal on 15.07.2019. No new colonies of RSW were observed and very few pupae were recorded (5 pupae per 10 leaflets). The farmers are advised to con- tinuously monitor the pest stage and look for active adult popula- tion if any by installing yellow sticky trap.

On 10.07.2019, Sri G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist & Head (Pl. Path), KVK, Vonipenta visited pomegranate orchards for diagnosis of pests and dis- eases at Pappana Palli village of Mydukur mandal. Observed flower drop and suggested to spray Boran @ 0.2% twice at 5 days interval.

Dr. P. Rama Devi, Senior Scientist, (Pl. Path.) & Head, HRS, Venkataramannagudem presented a pro- ject on “Standardization of liquid formulation and mass multiplication of promising Entomopatho- gen Isaria fumosorosea (NBAIR, Pfu 5) against Rugose Spiraling Whitefly, Aleurodicus rugiopercula- tus Martin in Andhra Pradesh before 54th Project Approval Committee (PAC) meeting of Technology Mission on Coconut (TMOC) on 04.07.2019 at National Institute of Agricultural Extension Manage- ment, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. Dr. B.V.K. Bhagavan, Principal Scientist (Hort.) & Head, Dr. K. Mamatha, Scientist (Hort.), Dr. R. Naga Lakshmi, Scientist (Hort.), Dr. K. Ravindra Kumar, Scientist (Hort.) Dr. Ch. HRS, Kovvur attended the Diploma in Agricultural Extension Services for Input Dealers (DAESI) programme at Horticultural Research Station, Kovvur, West Godavari on 11.07.2019.Dr. R. Naga Lakshmi, Scientist (Hort.) and Dr. Ch. Kishore kumar explained about the cultivation aspects and plant protection management in Horticultural crops.

Dr.K. Seshakiran, Asst. Professor (Pl. Path.), CoH, Venkataramanna- gudem participated in the "Interactive meeting of Summer Research Fellows & Mentors with Science Academies" at Indian National Sci- ence Academy, New Delhi on 08.07.2019.

Er. P.C.Vengaiah, Scientist(FST), Horticultural Research Station, Pandirimamidi attended three days training on "Patent application drafting and filing procedure" from 8th -10th July, 2019 at Ni-MSME campus, Hyderabad.

Visits Dr. H.P. Singh, Ex. DDG (Horticulture), ICAR & Chairman, Confed- eration of Horticulture Association along with Dr.J.Dilip Babu, Director of Research visited Horticultural Research Station, Am- bajipeta and interacted with the scientists on ongoing research activities and also visited Entomology and Pathology laboratories and suggested to concentrate on Biological management of pests and diseases, Production of hybrid seedlings at farmers field with the intervention of Horticulture Research station on 02.07.2019.

On 12.07.2019, Third year B.Sc (Ag) students (73 nos.), College of Agriculture, Rajamahendravaram visited the KVK, Pandirimamidi. Dr. D. Manohara Prasad, Principal Scientist & Head explained about the activities of KVK, Pandirimamidi and HRS, Pandirimamidi to the students. The students were enlightened about on farm demo units like Cashew grafting, vermi-composting and Beekeeping. Sri. Er. P.C. Vengaiah Scientist (FST) explained about palmyrah processing. Dr. S.Adarsha Scientist (Ento.), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Pandirimamidi coordinated the visit.

Awards Dr.L.Mukunda Lakshmi, Sr. Scientist (Hort.), CRS, Tirupati received ‘Best Research Scientist Award’ and Dr.V.Sudha Vani, Associate Profes- sor (Hort.) received ‘Best Teacher Award’ and Gold medals for academic excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate studies were conferred to the top performers during 3rd convocation of the university on 01.07.2019.

Ms. K.Lakshmikala and Ms.M.Tripura received “Anne Shikhamani Memorial Gold Medals” for securing highest OGPA at UG level for 2013 and 2014 respectively and Ms.M.Lakshmi Naga Nandhini received “Dr.T.B.Dasharadhi Gold Medal” for securing highest OGPA at PG level for 2015 during 3rd convocation of the university on 01.07.2019.
