Active Participation of Scientists in Titli Cyclone Affected Areas Scientists of Dr.YSRHU under the guidance of Sri Chiranjiv Choudhary, IFS, Vice-Chancellor, Dr.YSRHU & Ex-officio Sec- retary to Govt. of A.P visited various ‘Titli’ cyclone affected coconut, cashew and banana areas in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts and suggested ameliorative meas- ures and distributed technical bulletins to the farmers. Dr.J.Dilip Babu, Director of Research co-ordinated the pro- gramme. Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor accompanied Sri Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy, Hon’ble Minis- ter for Agriculture & Horticulture, Govt. of A.P during his visit to cyclone affected areas.

Gandhi Jayanthi 150th Birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated at administrative office, all the constitu- ent colleges, Research Stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras of Dr. YSRHU on 02nd October, 2018. Various competitions for students and staff members were conducted on this occasion and distrib- uted prizes to the participants who won the competitions viz., essay writing, elocution, and drawing

Mahila Kisan Diwas

At KVK, Venkataramannagudem

Mahila Kisan Diwas program was conducted by KVK, Venkatar- mannagudem on 15.10.2018. In this programme, Sri.M. Bapi- raju, Hon’ble Chairman,Zilla Parishad, West Godavari, Sri. Ganni Veeranjanelu, Hon’ble MLA, Unguturu, Sri.V.V.Siva Rama Raju, Hon’ble, MLA, Undi, University officers, JDA, JDF, PD, ATMA, DDH and scientists of HRS and KVK, Venkataramanna- gudem and officials from Departments of Agriculture, Horti- culture, ZBNF, of Agriculture, Horticulture, ZBNF, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Sericulture and have participated. Sri. Ganni Veeranjanelu, Hon’ble MLA, Unguturu has presided over the function. Exhibition was inaugurated by the Chief Guests and Guests of Honor. The innovative and best women farmers were felicitated by the dignitaries. Kitchen garden kits were also distributed to the women farmers on this occassion.

At KVK, Pandirimamidi

On 15.10.2018, Mahila Kisan Diwas programme was celebrated at KVK, Pandirimamidi. In this programme Dr.R.V.S.K.Reddy, Di- rector of Extension interacted with women farmers regarding the activities of KVK which were initiated to make them self sus- tainable. Chief guest Smt. Vantala Rajeswari, MLA, addressed the farmers and advised the women farmers to move forward in ag- riculture with new ideas. The women farmers who are innova- tive in farming were felicitated by Hon’ble MLA and KVK staff. Dr.A.Srinivas, Principal Scientist & Head, Dr.S.Adarsha, Srividya Rani.N, Raja Sekhar, Bhanu Murthy Scientists of KVK, PMD, APD Velugu other dignitaries and about 125 farmers have participated.

At KVK, Vonipenta

On 15.10.2018, Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path) and technical team of KVK, Vonipenta celebrated Mahila Kisan Diwas. The scientists emphasized the role of women in agriculture as entrepreneurs and opportunities to farm women in agriculture and allied sectors.

Education NSS Activities

Blood donation camp was organized by Red Cross Society, Kadapa at CoH, Anantharajupeta on 06.10.2018. In this programme 35 units of blood was donated by NSS volunteers and college staff. Dr. M. Rama Krishna, Associate Dean, NSS officers Dr. B. Tanuja Priya, Associate Professor (Hort.), Dr. K. Aruno- dayam, Asst. Professor (Pl. Path.) coordinated the programme.

Freshers Day Celebrations

Freshers’ Day for the 2018 admitted batch students of CoH, Venkataramannagudem and CoH, Chinalataripi was celebrated on 06.10.2018. Dr.M.Lakshmi Narayana Reddy, Dean of Horticulture, Dr.D.Srihari, Dean of PG Studies, Dr.A.Sujatha, Dean of Student Af- fairs, Dr.K.Gopal, Controller of Examinations and Dr.R.V.S.K. Reddy, Director of Extension graced the occasion and motivated the freshers by their messages. Dr. K. Uma Jyothi, Associate Dean of CoH, VRGudem congratulated the newly joined students and wished them to excel in their career. Dr. T. Padma Latha, Associate Dean in-charge of CoH, Chinalataripi attended the function and addressed the students.

Daan Utsav Programme

SKPP Horticultural Polytechnic, Ramachandrapuram organized Daan Utsav Programme from 02.10.2018 to 08.10.18. All the students and staff actively participated in this programme. On this occasion Sri M. Satti Raju, Principal addressed students and explained abut the programme. Daan Utsav formerly known as The Joy of Giving Week is a "festival" that aims to become a part of the Indian ethos, with the week being celebrated every year covering Gandhi Jayanti by engaging people through "acts of giving" - money, time, resources and skills back to society.

RHWEP Activities

Dr.M.Ramakrishna, Associate Dean, CoH, Anantarajupeta visited KVK, Periyavaram on 08.10.2018 to monitor the progress of vari- ous activities of RHWEP students at Periyavaram and Vallivedu villages of mandal. The visit was assisted by Dr. M. Kavitha, Officer Incharge and Ms. S.M. Sailaja, Research Associate (Hort.), KVK, Periyavaram . Students were advised to be needfully innovative while handling location specific farm related stuations.

On 03.10.2018, Miss Srividya Rani.N, Scientist (Agri. Extn.) and Sri.P.Raja Sekhar, Scientist (SS&AC), KVK, Pandirima- midi had taken the RHWEP students to All Radio, Visakhapatnam as a part of vocational training on mass me- dia services in RHWEP programme. In this programme the RHWEP students were briefed with the agricultural and al- lied programmes broadcasted through radio, how they are being recorded and the timings etc. As a part of this students shared their views on different topics related to agriculture, horticulture and allied activities which are useful to farmers and participated in group discussion on topics such as Swachta hi sewa and pollution awareness and control. On 05.10.2018, RHWEP students under the guidance of Ms. Srividya Rani.N, Scientist (Agri. Extn.), KVK, Pandirimamidi conducted Swachhta Hi Sewa activities in their villages along with school students and interacted with DWCRA, SHG members re- garding the activities taken up in the village. Information centre was also kept in the village and making the farmer aware of the pest and disease infestation in the crops along with suitable rec- ommendations. Personality Development Classes

Personality Development and Motivational classes were conducted at CoH, Venkataramannagudem to all the UG and PG students from 03.10.2018 to 08.10.2018. Sri B.Siva Prasad, Corporate Trainer and Motivational Speaker motivated the students through his lectures.

Guest Lectures Dr.P.Narayana Reddy, Retd. Professor (Pl. Path.), Dr.T.V.Neelakanta Sastry, Retd. Professor (Agri. Eco- nomics), Dr.G.Satyanarayana, Retd. Professor (Agril. Statis- tics) and Dr.M.Rajmannar, Retd. ments and ‘Various plant pathology aspects’ respectively from 3rd October, 2018 to 4th October, 2018 .

Research

Incidence of mealy bug was observed in Acorus calamus, a medici- nal plant at HRS, Venkataramannagudem by Dr. V.S.L.Saranya, Research Associate (Ento.) during August, 2018 and was identi- fied as Dysmicoccus brevipes (Cockerell) by Dr. Sunil Joshi, Princi- pal Scientist NBAIR, Bengaluru, who confirmed that the species has not been recorded earlier on A. calamus in India or elsewhere. The mealy bugs were pinkish orange in colour and found to be in colonies (of both nymphs and adults) infesting the rhizomes of A.calamus causing yellowing of the leaves and subsequent drying of plants.

Extension

Training Programmes

Dr. B. Srinivasulu, Principal Scientist (Hort.) & Head, HRS, Anantapu- ramu attended a training programme as resource person on ‘Banana cultivation’ at Regional Horticultural Training Institute, Anantapuramu on 09.10.2018.

Mr. D. Vinod Naik, Research Associate (Agri. Extn.), KVK, Peri- yavaram attended a training programme as resource person for MPEO’S of Venkatagiri, and divisions was organized by Dept. of Agriculture on 12.10.2018 at and were explained about the cultivational aspects of acid lime, groundnut and paddy and also discussed about PRA tech- niques.

Dr.N.B.V.Chalapathi Rao, Principal Scientist (Ento.), HRS, Ambajipeta participated in awareness meeting on rugose spiralling whitefly at Punyakshetram village of Rajanagaram mandal, East Godavari district on 11.10.2018 and demonstrated the control measures and created awareness among the farmers.

Smt. B.Neeraja, Scientist (Pl. Path.), HRS, Ambajipeta participated in the meeting on ‘Replanting & Rejuvenation scheme on coconut’ organized by CDB and Department of Horticulture, Amalapuram at Gangalakurru village and interacted with the farmers and explained the importance of method of planting, pests and disease management in coconut on 10.10.2018.

Dr. B. Srinivasulu, Principal Scientist (Hort.) & Head, HRS, Anantapu- ramu attended an awareness programme on new tuberose cultivars at KVK, Kalyandurg on 05.10.2018. Later distributed seed material of new tuberose cultivars to the farmers.

On 04.10.2018, training programme on value addition to millets to women was organized at KVK, Vonipenta. Smt. Suneetha Runjala Research Associate (Home science) explained about the impor- tance of millets in every day diets. Method demonstration on preparation of ragi cake, sajja vadalu to women was conducted. Women from Adireddipally, Mudireddipally, Mudireddipallytanda have attended. Dr. B. Srinivasulu, Principal Scientist (Hort.) & Head, HRS, Ananta- puramu attended a training programme as resource person on ‘Mango cultivation’ at Regional Horticultural Training Institute, An- antapuramu on 04.10.2018.

Dr. P. Rama Devi, Sr. Scientist (Pl. Path), HRS, Venkataramanna- gudem attended one day work shop as a resource person on “Status and Scope for Promotion of Medicinal Plants Cultivation in ” on 06.10.2018 at Narsapur, West Godavari dis- trict.

Front Line Demonstrations

Ms. S. M. Sailaja, Research Associate (Hort.), KVK, Periyavaram has se- lected beneficiary farmers for front line demonstrations on pulses and black gram seed of TBG-104 variety was distributed to the selected farmers on 10.10.2018 at KVK, Periyavaram. The seed was procured from RARS, Tirupati.

On 08.10.2018, KVK, Vonipenta initiated FLD and conducted method demonstration on weeding with 5 pronged wheel hoe in cow pea at Settivaripalli village of Mydukur mandal. And explained the benefits of weeding with wheel hoe viz., more aeration to plants roots, increased weed control efficiency and reduced drudgery etc. Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path.) and Smt. R.Suneetha, Research Associate (Home science) coordinated the programme.

Diagnostic Visits

On 01.10.2018, Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path), KVK, Vonipenta visited paddy fields for di- agnosis of pests and diseases at Madirepalli village of Duvvuru mandal and observed gallmidge inci- dence in paddy fields and recommended application of carbofuran 3G @ 10kg /acre.

On 10.10.2018, Mr. D. Vinod Naik, Research Associate (Agri. Exten- sion), KVK, Periyavaram visited cluster bean field at Kalapadu village of Venkatagiri mandal and identified that the crop was affected with mosaic and suggested to spray dimethoate or methyldematon@2ml/l or acephate @1.5gm/l for control of vectors.

On 11.10.2018, Mr. D. Vinod Naik, Research Associate (Agri. Exten- sion), KVK, Periyavaram visited palmarosa field at Busapalem village of Venkatagiri mandal. Suggested to spray diuron @ 1.5 kg ai/ha (or) oxyfluorfen @500gms ai/ha for effective weed control.

On 09.10.2018, Dr. A.Srinivas Principal scientist & Head, Dr.S. Adar- sha, Scientist (Ento.), KVK, Pandirimamidi and Sri. Nagachari, DPD, ATMA, East Godavari district observed fruit fly damage in ridge gourd and aphid infestation in cow pea fields. Recommended instal- lation of fruit fly traps @ 12 per acre for control of fruit fly and spraying of dimethoate @ 2ml/l for aphid control.

On 04.10.2018, G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path) and Dr V. Nagarjuna, Research Associate (Soil Science), KVK, Vonipenta have visited banana fields at Lingaladinne Palli village of B.Matham mandal and observed si- gatoka leaf spot in banana and recommended foliar spray of chlorothalo- nil @ 0.2% or propiconazole @0.1%.

On 04.10.2018, Dr.V. Yugandhar, Research Associate (Hort.), KVK, Vonipenta visited turmeric fields at Kanagudur village of Duvvuru mandal and observed micronutrient deficiency in turmeric fields and suggested to spray micronutrient mixture @ 5 g/l twice at 10 days interval.

On 05.10.2018, Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path), KVK, Vonipenta visited turmeric fields at Akkulayapalli village of Mydu- kur mandal and observed the incidence of turmeric leaf spot disease and recommended spraying of propiconazole @ 0.1% twice at 15days interval.

On 06.10.2018, Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path) and Dr.V. Yugand- har, Research Associate (Horticulture), KVK, Vonipenta visited turmeric fields at Mittamanupalli village of Mydukur Mandal and observed rhizome fly infestation and recommended spraying profenophos @ 0.2% or applica- tion of carbofuron 3G @ 10kg/acre.

On 08.10.2018, Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path) and Smt R. Su- neetha, Research Associate (Home Science), KVK, Vonipenta visited cowpea fields at Settivaripalli village of Mydukur Mandal and observed leaf webber infestation in cowpea and recommended spraying of monocrotophos@ 0.16% or acephate @ 1.5g/l.

On 09.10.2018, Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path) and Dr V. Yugandhar, Research Associate (Horticulture), KVK, Vonipenta visited banana fields at Somireddy Palli village of B.Matham mandal and ob- served potassium (K) deficiency in banana and recommended to spray sulphate of potash or potassium nitrate @ 5g/l.

Smt. B.Neeraja, Scientist (Pl. Path.), HRS, Ambajipeta carried out field di- agnostic visit to S.Yanam village and observed the black headed caterpil- lar damage in coconut and suggested its management practices to the farmers on 08.10.2018.

On 12.10.2018, Dr. S. Adarsha, Scientist (Ento.) & Technology agent from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Pandirimamidi visited paddy var. Chandra (MTU 1153) fields under ATMA, 2018-19. Observed rodent damage and suggested use of bromadiolone 0.005 % along with bait for management of rodents.

On 12.10.2018, Dr. S. Adarsha, Scientist (Ento.) and technology agent from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Pandirimamidi visited blackgram var. TBG-104 fields under CFLD Pulses 2018-19, demonstrated and installed pheromone and sticky traps for control of pests.

Dr.N.B.V.Chalapathi Rao, Principal Scientist (Ento.), HRS, Ambajipeta participated in field diagnostic survey in Vakkalanka village, Amba- jipeta mandal of East Godavari district and created awareness on rugose spiralling whitefly and its control measures to the farmers on 08.10.2018.

On 04.10.2018 Dr. S. Adarsha, Scientist (Ento.) and N.Srividya Rani, Scientist (Agri. Extn.), KVK, Pandirimamidi visited leafy vegetable plots and azolla unit at Vedurupakala village of Gokavaram mandal. Recommended for use of azolla as poultry feed and biofertiliser in rice fields and its method of application for effective usage of re- sources.

On 09.10.2018, Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path) and Dr V. Yugandhar, Re- search Associate (Horticulture), KVK, Vonipenta visited guava orchards at Somireddy Palli village of B.Matham mandal. The scientists observed the nema- tode infestation in guava and suggested to remove and destroy the infected plants followed by application of Carbofuran 3G @30grms/plant before planting of new grafts in the infested pits for gap filling.

On 11.10.2018, Dr. V. Nagarjuna, Research Associate (Soil Science) and Dr.V. Yugandhar, Research Associate (Horticulture), KVK, Vonipenta visited turmeric fields for diagnosis of pests and diseases at Ecopalli village of Duvvur mandal and observed leaf spot and micronutrient deficiency in turmeric fields. Suggested spraying of mancozeb @ 2.5 g/l for leaf spot disease and micronutrient mixture @ 5 gm/lit twice at 10 days interval.

On 12.10.2018, Dr.V. Yugandhar, Research Associate (Hort.) and Dr. V. Nagarjuna, Research Associate (Soil Science), KVK, Vonipenta vis- ited brinjal fields at Sunkulagari Palli village of Mydukur mandal and observed brinjal shoot and fruit borer infestation. Recommended the removal of infested shoot followed by spraying of profenophos @ 2ml/l. On 09.10.2018, Dr. A.Srinivas, Principal scientist & Head, S. Adarsha Sci- entist (Ento.), KVK, Pandirimamidi along with Sri. Nagachari, DPD, ATMA, East Godavari district visited demonstration plots sponsored by ATMA 2018-19 at Vedurupaka village of Gokavaram mandal and suggested suit- able measures for pest and disease management in rice, chillies and brin- jal crops.

Custom Hiring Centre On 15.10.2018, Custom Hiring centre was inaugurated at I.Polavaram village of Rampachodavaram mandal by Smt Vantala Ra- jeswari, MLA, Rampachodavaram constituency in the presence of Dr.R.V.S.K. Reddy, Director of Extension and distributed equipment viz., sprayers, weeders, tarpaulins etc. This helps the farmers to use sprayers, weeders on rent basis with minimum charges. The equip- ment was also provided to custom hiring centre at Bandapalli village of Rampachodavarm mandal and Kunduluru village of Chintur mandal. Biscuit unit was also provided to I.Polavaram women farmers for livelihood promotion.

Visits General Dr. J. Dilip Babu, Director of Research inspected ongoing construc- tion works and research activities of HRS, Anantapuramu on 03.10.2018. Later visited M/s. Anantha PVC Pipes Private Limited Company and M/s. Anantha Tissue Culture Laboratory, Anantapu- ramu along with Dr. B. Srinivasulu, Principal Scientist & Head, HRS, Anantapuramu. Dr. G. Ravindra Chary, Project Coordinator, AICRP on Dry Land Agri- culture visited HRS, Anantapuramu on 04.10.2018. Dr. B. Srini- vasulu, Principal Scientist (Hort.) & Head and Dr. P Deepthi, Scien- tist (Pl. Path.) explained the ongoing research activities on pome- granate.

Dr. D. Srihari, Dean of PG Studies, Dr. A. Sujatha, Dean of Student Affairs and Dr. K. Gopal, Controller of Examinations visited CoH, Anantharajupeta on 11.10.2018 to know the existing facilities and to plan the required facilities to start Ph.D program in Plant Pathology and M.Sc in Entomology. Later interacted with UG & PG students and inspected hostels.

Twenty five farmers from Madibaka village of Yerpedu mandal vis- ited CoH, Anantharajupeta as a part of Village adoption programme of RARS, Tirupati on 10.10.2018. Dr.V.VijayaBhaskar, Prof (Hort.) ex- plained about the importance of flower crops to the farmers.

Dr.E.Karuna Sree, Principal Scientist & Head, Dr.A.Devivaraprasad Reddy, Scientist (Fisheries) and Dr.T.Vijaya Nirmala, Scientist (Vet. Science), KVK, Venkatara- mannagudem visited the National Awardee KVKs in Chhattis- garh state as a part of HRD programme from 8th to 10th October, 2018. Also visited Agricultural Museum at the Directorate of Ex- tension, Indira Gandhi Krishi Viswavidyalay (IGKV), VNR Nurs- eries, Raipur, KVK, Kanker, Jagdhalpur, Dhanthewada and inter- acted with the technical staff regarding the pioneering activities of KVKs. Technologies that were assessed by the KVKs and largely adopted by the farmers i.e. integrated farming systems models, nutrition kitchen gardens in schools, rearing of Kadaknadh poultry breed, direct seeding in paddy, apiary, oyster mushroom spawn production and cultivation etc., were studied both in KVK instruc- tional farm and farmer’s fields and noted the successful interventions that can be replicated in the existing farming systems of West Godavari district.

Dr. A. Devivaraprasad Reddy, Scientist, KVK, Venkataramannagudem and Mr. K. Mohan Rao, Progressive farmer, Buttaihgudem mandal participated in Agriculture Conclave on 05.10.2018 as a part of India International Science Festival (IISF) from 5th-8th October 2018 at In- dira Gandhi Pratishthan, Lucknow.
