Dr.J.Dilip Babu, Director of Research co-ordinated the pro- gramme. Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor accompanied Sri Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy, Hon’ble Minis- ter for Agriculture & Horticulture, Govt. of A.P during his visit to cyclone affected areas. Gandhi Jayanthi 150th Birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated at administrative office, all the constitu- ent colleges, Research Stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras of Dr. YSRHU on 02nd October, 2018. Various competitions for students and staff members were conducted on this occasion and distrib- uted prizes to the participants who won the competitions viz., essay writing, elocution, and drawing Admn, Venkataramannagudem CoH, Venkataramannagudem KVK, Venkataramannagudem . Mahila Kisan Diwas At KVK, Venkataramannagudem Mahila Kisan Diwas program was conducted by KVK, Venkatar- mannagudem on 15.10.2018. In this programme, Sri.M. Bapi- raju, Hon’ble Chairman,Zilla Parishad, West Godavari, Sri. Ganni Veeranjanelu, Hon’ble MLA, Unguturu, Sri.V.V.Siva Rama Raju, Hon’ble, MLA, Undi, University officers, JDA, JDF, PD, ATMA, DDH and scientists of HRS and KVK, Venkataramanna- gudem and officials from Departments of Agriculture, Horti- culture, ZBNF, of Agriculture, Horticulture, ZBNF, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Sericulture and have participated. Sri. Ganni Veeranjanelu, Hon’ble MLA, Unguturu has presided over the function. Exhibition was inaugurated by the Chief Guests and Guests of Honor. The innovative and best women farmers were felicitated by the dignitaries. Kitchen garden kits were also distributed to the women farmers on this occassion. At KVK, Pandirimamidi On 15.10.2018, Mahila Kisan Diwas programme was celebrated at KVK, Pandirimamidi. In this programme Dr.R.V.S.K.Reddy, Di- rector of Extension interacted with women farmers regarding the activities of KVK which were initiated to make them self sus- tainable. Chief guest Smt. Vantala Rajeswari, MLA, addressed the farmers and advised the women farmers to move forward in ag- riculture with new ideas. The women farmers who are innova- tive in farming were felicitated by Hon’ble MLA and KVK staff. Dr.A.Srinivas, Principal Scientist & Head, Dr.S.Adarsha, Srividya Rani.N, Raja Sekhar, Bhanu Murthy Scientists of KVK, PMD, APD Velugu other dignitaries and about 125 farmers have participated. Volume.IV, Issue–19 Dr.YSRHU e-Newsletter 1st —15th October, 2018 2 At KVK, Vonipenta On 15.10.2018, Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path) and technical team of KVK, Vonipenta celebrated Mahila Kisan Diwas. The scientists emphasized the role of women in agriculture as entrepreneurs and opportunities to farm women in agriculture and allied sectors. Education NSS Activities Blood donation camp was organized by Red Cross Society, Kadapa at CoH, Anantharajupeta on 06.10.2018. In this programme 35 units of blood was donated by NSS volunteers and college staff. Dr. M. Rama Krishna, Associate Dean, NSS officers Dr. B. Tanuja Priya, Associate Professor (Hort.), Dr. K. Aruno- dayam, Asst. Professor (Pl. Path.) coordinated the programme. Freshers Day Celebrations Freshers’ Day for the 2018 admitted batch students of CoH, Venkataramannagudem and CoH, Chinalataripi was celebrated on 06.10.2018. Dr.M.Lakshmi Narayana Reddy, Dean of Horticulture, Dr.D.Srihari, Dean of PG Studies, Dr.A.Sujatha, Dean of Student Af- fairs, Dr.K.Gopal, Controller of Examinations and Dr.R.V.S.K. Reddy, Director of Extension graced the occasion and motivated the freshers by their messages. Dr. K. Uma Jyothi, Associate Dean of CoH, VRGudem congratulated the newly joined students and wished them to excel in their career. Dr. T. Padma Latha, Associate Dean in-charge of CoH, Chinalataripi attended the function and addressed the students. Daan Utsav Programme SKPP Horticultural Polytechnic, Ramachandrapuram organized Daan Utsav Programme from 02.10.2018 to 08.10.18. All the students and staff actively participated in this programme. On this occasion Sri M. Satti Raju, Principal addressed students and explained abut the programme. Daan Utsav formerly known as The Joy of Giving Week is a "festival" that aims to become a part of the Indian ethos, with the week being celebrated every year covering Gandhi Jayanti by engaging people through "acts of giving" - money, time, resources and skills back to society. Volume.IV, Issue–19 Dr.YSRHU e-Newsletter 1st —15th October, 2018 3 RHWEP Activities Dr.M.Ramakrishna, Associate Dean, CoH, Anantarajupeta visited KVK, Periyavaram on 08.10.2018 to monitor the progress of vari- ous activities of RHWEP students at Periyavaram and Vallivedu villages of Venkatagiri mandal. The visit was assisted by Dr. M. Kavitha, Officer Incharge and Ms. S.M. Sailaja, Research Associate (Hort.), KVK, Periyavaram . Students were advised to be needfully innovative while handling location specific farm related stuations. On 03.10.2018, Miss Srividya Rani.N, Scientist (Agri. Extn.) and Sri.P.Raja Sekhar, Scientist (SS&AC), KVK, Pandirima- midi had taken the RHWEP students to All India Radio, Visakhapatnam as a part of vocational training on mass me- dia services in RHWEP programme. In this programme the RHWEP students were briefed with the agricultural and al- lied programmes broadcasted through radio, how they are being recorded and the timings etc. As a part of this students shared their views on different topics related to agriculture, horticulture and allied activities which are useful to farmers and participated in group discussion on topics such as Swachta hi sewa and pollution awareness and control. On 05.10.2018, RHWEP students under the guidance of Ms. Srividya Rani.N, Scientist (Agri. Extn.), KVK, Pandirimamidi conducted Swachhta Hi Sewa activities in their villages along with school students and interacted with DWCRA, SHG members re- garding the activities taken up in the village. Information centre was also kept in the village and making the farmer aware of the pest and disease infestation in the crops along with suitable rec- ommendations. Personality Development Classes Personality Development and Motivational classes were conducted at CoH, Venkataramannagudem to all the UG and PG students from 03.10.2018 to 08.10.2018. Sri B.Siva Prasad, Corporate Trainer and Motivational Speaker motivated the students through his lectures. Guest Lectures Dr.P.Narayana Reddy, Retd. Professor (Pl. Path.), Dr.T.V.Neelakanta Sastry, Retd. Professor (Agri. Eco- nomics), Dr.G.Satyanarayana, Retd. Professor (Agril. Statis- tics) and Dr.M.Rajmannar, Retd. Professor (Pl.Path.) delivered guest lectures to the UG and PG students of CoH, Venkataramannagudem on ‘ Diseases of various horticultural crops and their management etc’, ‘Farm management and Production Economics’, ‘Design of Experi- Volume.IV, Issue–19 Dr.YSRHU e-Newsletter 1st —15th October, 2018 4 ments and ‘Various plant pathology aspects’ respectively from 3rd October, 2018 to 4th October, 2018 . Research Incidence of mealy bug was observed in Acorus calamus, a medici- nal plant at HRS, Venkataramannagudem by Dr. V.S.L.Saranya, Research Associate (Ento.) during August, 2018 and was identi- fied as Dysmicoccus brevipes (Cockerell) by Dr. Sunil Joshi, Princi- pal Scientist NBAIR, Bengaluru, who confirmed that the species has not been recorded earlier on A. calamus in India or elsewhere. The mealy bugs were pinkish orange in colour and found to be in colonies (of both nymphs and adults) infesting the rhizomes of A.calamus causing yellowing of the leaves and subsequent drying of plants. Extension Training Programmes Dr. B. Srinivasulu, Principal Scientist (Hort.) & Head, HRS, Anantapu- ramu attended a training programme as resource person on ‘Banana cultivation’ at Regional Horticultural Training Institute, Anantapuramu on 09.10.2018. Mr. D. Vinod Naik, Research Associate (Agri. Extn.), KVK, Peri- yavaram attended a training programme as resource person for MPEO’S of Venkatagiri, Sullurpeta and Naidupeta divisions was organized by Dept. of Agriculture on 12.10.2018 at Gudur and were explained about the cultivational aspects of acid lime, groundnut and paddy and also discussed about PRA tech- niques. Dr.N.B.V.Chalapathi Rao, Principal Scientist (Ento.), HRS, Ambajipeta participated in awareness meeting on rugose spiralling whitefly at Punyakshetram village of Rajanagaram mandal, East Godavari district on 11.10.2018 and demonstrated the control measures and created awareness among the farmers. Smt. B.Neeraja, Scientist (Pl. Path.), HRS, Ambajipeta participated in the meeting on ‘Replanting & Rejuvenation scheme on coconut’ organized by CDB and Department of Horticulture, Amalapuram at Gangalakurru village and interacted with the farmers and explained the importance of method of planting, pests and disease management in coconut on 10.10.2018. Gudem, A.P., India *Corresponding author ABSTRACT The agriculture sector benefits more from mobile phones in the developing countries as it saves money, time and offers accurate advantage for farmers. The mobile phone system can be used to alert villagers about disease outbreaks and other important agricultural information. Many of the K e yw or ds farmers suffer from lack of up to date, accurate market price information because of their remote location, or simply because they don‘t know how and where to get trustworthy information. A study Advisory services, was undertaken to assess the potential and use of mobile phones by farmers. The study sample Mobile telephony, comprised of 120 farmers, selected randomly from the farmers visiting Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Respondents Periyavaram, SPSR Nellore District, A.P. The study indicates that 24.16 % farmers owned a mobile Farming for more than 3 years and 85.84 percent received information related to agriculture from farmers.
