Photo by Grand Lubell President's Message Dear Members, Mary and I have travelled most of life’s path as Toledo Club members so we can, vaguely, remember staggering out of squash parties and a few years later struggling into the Club toting cribs and supplies for babysitting. As in all great traditions, we move along and others follow, enjoying the Club for the many activities available at each stage of life. With this perspective, I am delighted by the rejuvenation of the Junior/Intermediate Committee with a new chairman, Nick Stack. I have attended several of their meetings and events and feel energized to share in their passion for the Club and their interest in deepening their ties. One example was an event that Nick and board member Rebecca Shope created called “Trunk and Treat.” This was a Halloween party where parents filled their trunks with treats, parked in our lot, and then had a safe and sane Trick or Treat. Later, family food and drinks were served in the Club with more than 60 people in attendance. The young group is following up with more events centered on the holiday charm of the Club, Santa and more than 40 trees sparkling in every room. Like last year, there will be a family New Year’s Eve party with a DJ and ball drop at 8 PM. At the same time, the Tavern Committee is shaking things up with successful events of a more adult flavor... such as Martinis with names that can’t be printed here. It goes without saying that this cadre of young people comprises the future of the Club. I hope you share my enthusiasm for the future as you see them enjoy the Club, spurring memories of our younger days. With the energy of youth comes change. The Membership Committee, the board, and the Junior/ Intermediate Committee (they say they want a new name) are exploring dress codes at area country clubs and other city clubs to create a simple and consistent code that allows members and guests to be comfortable and to feel appropriately attired. This research may result in an update to the house rules which we will publish when complete. For now and the future, my belief – which is shared by everyone I have spoken with – is that we need to respect the Club and its traditions. Nonetheless, to expand utilization of areas like the Tavern, we need to be in step with contemporary expectations. I welcome your comments. We are entering the most active and festive part of the year at the Club. Each member will enjoy the spectacle of the Club all decked out for the holidays. From Sunday brunch to midnight on New Year’s Eve, there is a party and celebration for all. Since this season is so busy, it is a good time to remind you that reservations are very important for your convenience as well as efficiency at the Club. Please call and let us know you are coming so we can ensure a wonderful experience for you, your family and your guests. I wish you the of the season and hope to see you at our Club. DECEMBER 2014 3 A DICKENS OF A TIME: PUTTING THE CLUB BACK INTO SANTA’S Remember last year when I took the blame CHRISTMAS. for spilling the beans on Santa’s private Christmas Day party at the Club? And how Santa was heard to say that he wished he’d never set foot in the Club? And planned to move his private party to the Sylvania Country Club? “I wish I’d never come to The Toledo Club!” he was heard to rage. All I can tell you is DO NOT EVER find yourself on Santa’s naughty list (something I successfully avoided as a child). On the first day of 2014, Mr. Nick sent to me a stocking full of coal. On the second day of 2014, Mr. Nick sent to me a stocking full of coal. On the third day of 2014, Mr. Nick sent to me…… you get the idea…… By the end of January, after successfully converting our home furnace to run on coal, I realized something had to be done to rectify this bituminous situation.

DECEMBER 2014 7 Centennial CELEBRATION Countdown to Centennial Celebration

By Tom Klein, member Centennial Committee

The eagerly awaited Centennial Celebration June 19 – 20, 2015, will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the construction of the building that is The Toledo Club’s home – and all that has been done to maintain its beauty and secure its future. In this month’s countdown to The Toledo Club’s Centennial Celebration, Topics writer Tom Klein reminds us that those improvements were made possible by the generosity and support of the club’s members. As one donor said, “That’s what we do.”

8 DECEMBER 2014

1915 Countdown to Centennial Celebration 2015

As the 100th anniversary of The Toledo Club’s opening of the 14th Street building approaches – June 2015 – it seems timely to report on the financial side of efforts to maintain its beauty and function. At the annual members’ meeting in Fall 2012, then President Joseph Zerbey announced a capital campaign to improve the club’s finances, to preserve or improve the building, equipment, and furnishings, and the establishment of a charitable tax deductible foundation (The Toledo Club Historical Foundation Fund) with the Toledo Community Foundation. The Toledo Community Foundation receives, holds and disburses donor-designated funds to support preservation projects at the Club. Through June 2014, the Club has received $116,970 in donations into this fund and has supported projects such as replacing windows with aesthetically appropriate, but energy efficient ones, renovating floors, and other interior projects. In addition, hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of in-kind and voluntary donor support have been provided for other capital projects outside of Foundation eligible guidelines. They include kitchen equipment, pool improvements, lighting controls, computer system upgrades, furniture re-upholstery, paintings restoration, etc. Support for this past summer’s HVAC project alone amounted to $580,000 and our member-supported program of mortgage paydown will reduce our indebted- ness by $500,000. As you can see, the Foundation donations, outright club donations, the mortgage pay down and HVAC projects will exceed $1,250,000 and we are still on target to meet the goals established for our centennial year. THANK YOU to all who have so generously supported our Club! As you can imagine, member support for maintenance and renewal of our beautiful Club is an ongoing challenge. As you plan your holiday giving for 2014, please consider a gift to the Toledo Community Foundation, designated for The Toledo Club Historical Foundation Fund. These capital donations are considered tax deductible charitable contributions. Member involvement and support make this the outstanding club that it is today.

I know I mentioned it last night in passing, but I wanted to make sure and put my thoughts in writing: Over the past two days, I hosted two events at the Toledo Club: The Board Fair on Thursday, October 23, and last night’s Leading for Toledo’s Future. Both events were simply flawless. Starting with the initial planning and scheduling meetings with Nancy to the professionalism of the staff on the night of each event, it was all we could have wanted and much, much more. Guests at both events, members of the planning committee and everyone in between piled compliment after compliment on the Club and staff.

I also have special appreciation for Nancy’s ability to address my last minute requests and menu changes with ease. She is really an asset on your team.

On behalf of the committees for both the Board Fair and Leading for Toledo’s Future, please pass along our thanks and appreciation to the entire Toledo Club team for their help in the success of these two events.

As always, Santa proved better than his word. He’d “I will honor The Toledo Club in the Past, become as good a friend, as good a master, and as good the Present, and the Future,” he said. a member, as The Toledo Club had ever known. And it has “I will not shut out the lessons that you always been said of him that he knew how to keep The have taught me.” Toledo Club well, if any one alive possessed the knowledge. He stumbled to his feet and staggered out the door into R the hallway, nearly running into Charlotte on her way out the door. He grabbed the startled woman by the arms and vigorously shook her. “Please,” Mr. Nick begged, “What’s today, my fine lady?” Surprised, Charlotte could only get out, “Today? Why, Christmas Day, of course.” before heading on out the door. Christmas Day? Santa could hardly believe it. He clapped his hands together. He hurried out into the lobby which was empty except for Roger who smiled and shook his hand. “Welcome back!”, he smiled. The sounds of someone singing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” filtered out from the Red Room. Santa followed the sound and found Jim Gottron plinking away on the piano. Mrs. Nick stood there smiling in her finest red Christmas frock, holding two glasses of Absolut Vodka with Rose’s lime juice and bleu cheese olives. Santa could only stand there smiling, happy and contented. He barely noticed Dennis passing through the room, pulling a jacket on and heading for the door.
