This confuses many a spectator at smaller scale shows. “How do you get electricity through the wood?” seems to be the most common question. On Saturday morning a full explanation is given, but by Sunday afternoon I’ve heard our operators answer with replies similar to “electroplated varnish”. Some heavy duty furniture glides allow the board to move up or down to the correct position. The size of the boards meant that operation had to be end-to-end. As we make an Autoshuttle device under our Timpdon Electronics brand, I set about converting my locomotives. This is a simple unit which allows tiny magnets at the side of the rail to control the locomotive – even slow it down and send it back along its path after a short wait. The locos were all given this facility (in addition to their normal controls) so that trains would continue to run up and down if the sole operator had to disappear from the layout for a few minutes. I didn’t want a fully scenic layout. I wanted to try and capture the

It sounds easy, but planked walkway across the rails lifts up about 10mm to uncouple the train. The Mamod points were also modified in the same way and servos added so that no hand from the sky would be needed. You’ve probably gathered by now that I like gadgets and little animated cameo scenes on a model railway.

Harlech Castle pulls the Gunpowder and Hearse wagon back to the sidings. Harlech Castle is a commercially available loco fitted with Timpdon Electronics controls. It’s an Essel production and must’ve done thousands of miles over the years, all without any wear or problems.

The taller scenic features such as trees, buildings, signal posts, etc. can all be removed and transported separately to enable the three layout boards to stack.

The big question was whether to have these working all the time or have them operator controlled. Then realisation dawned. Allow the viewing public to operate them. Large ‘omnibus’ type bell-push switches were designed and placed within easy reach of little hands. This

Chris has always been into Narrow Gauge, starting with 009 in his teens. After a brief period of trying to be grown-up, he returned to modelling in his early thirties. It was whilst attending a mixed scale narrow gauge show some twenty plus years ago, he discovered 16mm scale. He says that’s when he found his true calling. Several 16mm scale layouts later (both inside and out), with only a slight deviation into 5” ground level, he now runs the successful Timpdon Electronics and the Timpdon Models businesses.

Even though I didn’t need a removable hatch to access the boiler for servicing, I still wanted to have the option of should a conversion to live steam be contemplated at some point in the future. To do this I didn’t cut out the roof under the hatch as per the instructions but instead made the hatch to sit on the roof with locating pieces that make use of the existing lateral slots etched in the roof to guide cutting out. The locating pieces were made from two pieces of 1/16 brass shaped to roof profile and soldered to the hatch. Should the hatch be required, cutting out the roof material under the hatch between the etched slots will render it serviceable. I was fortunate in a friend offering me a failed copper shell of a boiler intended for a coal fired locomotive. I reduced the length of the boiler barrel to that more closely representing a coke burning tram boiler. For the interested reader Volume 3 of Gladwin (2007) informs us that a 5 panel Kitson tram #24 of the Birmingham and Aston system (Kitson T217), had a barrel only 4'5" long and 3’ diameter and a firebox 2'9" long. So, a black immediately started thinking about Garden-Rail.co.uk | 281 January 2018 31 CONSTRUCTION 1:19 releasing a set of nativity-themed figures for Christmas! Before painting I always advise the builder to degrease all resin components thoroughly to remove any trace of mould release agent. I have had models in the dim and distant past where this has proved very challenging, and if you don’t get it right first time, the only way forward is to bring out the ‘big gun’ Nitromors paint stripper and start all over again. This is not and never has been the case with Modeltown. In fact I did not even wash these components at all. I sprayed them straight out of the bag. The same angle was also supplied with the smithy, but it did not seem right to have such a ridge adjoining corrugated iron sheet, so I used some real leading I had in stock, which I think looks more prototypical for this building. The wooden walls of the smithy were hand-painted with Humbrol paints. I like to mask off a plank at a time, moving from left to right across the building, as I am right-handed. I used a light brush of mid- brown Humbrol 113, as I wanted to leave some black undercoat showing through, then, again, whilst still when, added the merest hint of Humbrol

You really need a light touch here and, as the technique’s name suggests, an almost dry brush. It is easier to add more paint later than take it off now! Once this was done the roof could be fitted. Before doing so, I could not help but notice the chimney at the back of the smithy looked a little thin. I happened to have some moulded brick- effect Plasticard in stock, so cut some small pieces to fit around the existing Metallic silver over red primer to create a rusty chimney, but doubled its width at the roof effect. sides, effectively making it square. eaders might know my main interest in the Welsh narrow gauge has majored on the RNorth Wales Narrow Gauge and it successor, the Welsh Highland Railway (WHR). When this kit was released it was something of a must have, to complement my existing WHR coaching stock. The body outer sides come with laser cut blind holes where bolts would have been on the real coach. There are twelve such holes per side, each one was drilled out with a 1mm dia drill, by hand. The pins represent bolts. The same method of fixing was used as for those on the bogies apart from the two at the bottom of the centre pillar. These were glued in place due to the lack depth of the wood.

Using external grade wood glue mixed with water layers of tissue paper are laid along the roof section. Three layers in total, each layer being allowed to dry before the next one is added. It is important that the width of the paper is wider than the roof, I allow in the region of 10mm either is no screwdriver access. The roof section comes laser cut into planks with small retaining tabs between each plant. It lends itself to bending (no jig required). To aid the final fitting of the roof section it was place on the body and held in place with several plastic crocodile clips. Left in place for 48 hours, when removed the roof had taken on the required curvature. This is more of an aid than a necessity. Garden-Rail.co.uk | 281 January 2018 37 CONSTRUCTION 1:19

Having fitted he roof section I opted for a simulated outer covering, using tissue paper. Installing the tissue paper was done by painting a diluted PVA and water mix. The first layer the glue was painted onto the wood of the roof with the paper being carefully laid in place. The final two layers were fitted in exactly the same way, glue painted on top of the previous layer. As each layer was fitted the sides and ends were teased over the protruding roof sections while still wet.

The same tactic was used for removing the excesses on the ends, but this time using the rounded end of the ruler. Trimming the four corners of the roof is not straightforward, being very much trial and error. It is often necessary to repeat this procedure several times before the tissue paper grips the underside of the roof.

A pair of vacuum stands with flexible hoses (from the original Brandbright company catalogue but not available at present) were fitted centrally on the coach ends. Door safety chains are a bit of modellers license as in reality such chains were not fitted until later in the lives of these coaches. Two problems arose when I started looking for the necessary parts, the first was finding split pins with an OD of 1mm. Eventually, eBay came up trumps. The second was finding sufficient chain of the right size, not such large links as they looked like end of coach safety chains. As with all laser cut thin ply kits there is very little weight. olystyrene is a useful medium for model construction, easy to TOOLS REQUIRED cut and work, and easy to bond Pusing a solvent to chemically bond components. Many will be familiar with polystyrene kits, it is also available in sheet form as well as a huge variety of extruded section. This article will focus on its use in creating the effect of wood. For those not familiar with its properties the two items shown here are created from scraps of styrene sheet so trying the techniques shown will not risk damaging a kit you have purchased. My day job involves creating master for resin and brass moulding, I prefer to use worked styrene to represent wood, as it is stable, grain free and easily bonded. The two pieces shown here are to 7/8ths scale, but the methods shown will apply to many scales, with due regard for the effects of scale. I have opted for a couple of simple projects to show the various techniques, with Left to right: Scalpel with 10A blade, minimal financial investment, I am sure razor saw, wire brush, brass brush, that you will be able to apply these to and nylon fleece. future projects for your own railways. n SIDING

The back story... On the Fosdyke Albert Fosdyke was a great admirer of Brewery Tramway with Sir William A Stanier of the LMR, as a beer wagon. was apparent at his home: his study had a model of a Black Five and there was a huge portrait of the Coronation Class locomotive named after the great man above his fireplace! He was intrigued by Stanier’s experimentation with steam turbine locomotives so Albert decided to have a go himself. As was usual with Albert’s experiments the locomotive was cobbled together from existing parts “stored” in the workshops of the Rossington Sand & Gravel Company or “acquired” from various sources. The four wheel chassis had been made a few years ago by the little known Bugwold Engine Company in a failed attempt to build a diesel version of a Beyer Garrett. Albert had picked up the chassis at auction and it had been lying around ever since. From the start Albert had tried to build his own coupling rod system but the complex three eighths positioning wouldn’t work – note this chassis Albert built a steel box around didn’t.
