Simony once called the Dolomites “a gi-
gantic city covered in debris with numerous Tcastles and towers“. Such is the scale and wonder of this legendary mountain range.
The ragged peaks and impressive rock formations, which have been called “the world’s most beautiful mountains“ by the mountaineer Reinhold Messner, have always been of great inspiration to the people of
Val Gardena. Many popular local tales and legends speak of the cultural heritage of the area around the
Sella Group and the Sassolungo, telling stories of witches, wise men, various forest creatures, monsters and brave soldiers. UNESCO has declared the Dolo- mites a World Heritage Site, and you will quickly feel the area’s special charm and flair. Having developed millions of years ago out of a tropical sea, this lime- stone mountain range still enchants locals and visitors alike. lpinism in the Dolomites of Val Gardena
started as early as the beginning of the
19th century. In the first half of the 20th Acentury, many renowned mountaineers made themselves a name, among those the legendary
Ferdinand Glück, who in the 1930s was known as “King of the Sella Towers”. He was a local from Selva
Gardena, a man of many trades, who was an outstand- ing mountaineer, cross-country skier, alpine skier and even ski jumper. It was he who established more than
20 hitherto unknown Alpine climbing routes on and in the surroundings of the Sella and the Sassolungo, many of which have now become classic routes frequented by many. In the 1950s, climbing in the
Dolomites became tremendously popular and was transformed from a sport of the elites into a veritable mass phenomenon. However, so much activity in the mountains soon required safety precautions and preventive measures. This gave birth to the Catores
Climbing Guild, which also organized rescue opera- tions. The mountain rescue service of the valley subsequently became one of the best and most renowned of its kind in the entire Dolomites region.
Even today, most of Val Gardena’s climbers and mountaineers, be it beginners or extremists, have utmost respect for the rescue service and are well aware of its importance. The Val Gardena Mountain
Guide Association has been organizing individual tours for more than 25 years.

he Puez-Odle Nature Park has been declared
part of the Dolomites which are listed as an
UNESCO World Heritage Site. This protected Tarea features many rock types, sedimentary depositions and alteration zones which are typical of
the region, making it a true “open book of geological
Earth history”. It is evidence of a development which
spans almost 60 million years and still testifies to the
existence of the tropical sea which once dominated the
region.
Nature wonders
The valley is full of spruces, larches and Swiss pines
along the forest paths, and rare flowers such as
daphnes, heathers and alpine roses can be found in the
understory. The chamois frequent the copses of
mountain pine, and if you’re lucky, you might even come
upon a capercaillie! On the high mountain meadows of
Val Gardena you will find crocuses and primroses in
spring, and in summer you will be able to admire the
stunning yellow and blue coloured meadows. On the
hiking trails you will come across monkshoods,
gentians and many other wonderful flowers, many of
which are protected by law such as the rare dwarf
alpine rose and the Turk’s cap lily. The local fauna is
every bit as rich and varied, with colorful butterflies and
rare birds such as snow finches, northern wheatears
and black redstarts, and high above the mountain
peaks in Vallunga you will be able to admire majestic
golden eagles.

Gardena indicate that the first inhabitants
of Val Gardena, who dwelt here at around A6,000 BC, were probably hunters. The population subsequently developed into a farming
community. As the Raeti (the ethnic name of the popula-
tion of Val Gardena), were romanised and the local
language mixed with Latin, the Ladin language
developed, which still prevails in this area. Not long
ago, the majority of the population of Val Gardena still
plied its trade as mountain farmers working the alpine
pastures and steep slopes around the Sella and the
Sassolungo. Such life wasn’t easy, and the hardship of
generations still has a profound influence on the local
inhabitants, who respect values such as diligence and
resourcefulness. Families and village communities still
play an important role in everyday life in Val Gardena.
Even today there are still processions in traditional
comstumes. Traditions are loved and respected by old
and young alike, and especially in their cuisine there is
a seamless transition from the traditional to new

inhabitants started to pass their time in winter, Iwhen the area was largely inaccessible from the outside, by carving wood. This unique skill quickly

In 1994, many artists in Val Gardena combined to form
an association called UNIKA, which today is known far
beyond regional borders for quality and creativity. Every
year in September, the UNIKA sculpture fair in Val
Gardena exhibits a range of stunning works of art. The
UNIKA gallery is open all year and shows many works
of art as well as hosting wood carving demonstrations.
400 years of tradition
The cultural centre of Ortisei hosts the newly designed
ART52 exhibition hall, which provides interesting
insight into the arts in Val Gardena, demonstrating the
many changes and advances which have influenced
wood carving in the area over the centuries.
The items with Val Gardena origin boast the Gardena
Art trademark – making them instantly recognizable as
quality works of art.

he legendary Saslong slope has been a
fascinating place for the best skiers in the
world for more than 40 years, hosting many TAlpine World Cup competitions. However, the resort is also a marvellous place for non-profession-
als, and has been awarded many prizes for its excellent
snow quality and superb slope preparation.
The famous mountain guide, film director and actor Luis
Trenker shot his films here more than 70 years ago, and
today Prince Albert II of Monaco is a frequent guest in
the resort. The ice skating champion Carolina Kostner
made her first turns on skates on one of the many rinks
in the area.
Carefree winter fun
Given the superb snow conditions, easy access and
variety of slopes, it comes as no surprise that practi-
cally everyone in the area likes to ski, and children can
be seen on the slopes from an extremely early age on.
However, a modern cross-country centre, one of South
Tyrol’s longest toboggan runs and many other facilities
also provide plenty of entertainment for those willing to
take a break from the slopes. If your legs get tired, why
not take an extended rest on one of the many quaint,
traditional Alpine huts, and have a good glass of local
wine accompanied by some speck, cheese and
“Schüttelbrot”, a local culinary delight.
You will find the local people to be extremely hospita-
ble and willing to talk, and you will feel the deep
connection between man and nature which unites them.

Val Gardena which has constantly
re-invented itself. Winter sport, as Wwell, has undergone many changes. Today, the area boasts highly modern lift facilities, which give access to more than 1,200 km of superbly groomed slopes in the Dolomiti Superski resort, one of the highlights of which is the 26 km Sellaronda. The modern, subterranean Gardena Ronda Express cable car conveniently connects the Sochers/Ciampinoi and
Col Raiser/Seceda skiing areas. The newly constructed cross-country centre on Monte Pana boasts a total of more than 30 km of ski runs, and the Nordic Active
Park in Vallunga is another true paradise for sports enthusiasts.

Selva Gardena he three villages in Val Gardena, Ortisei, S. Cristina and Selva Gardena, offer many
opportunities to enjoy and experience the Tlocal way of life. Ortisei, located on an altitude of 1,236 m above sea level at the entrance to
the valley, will enchant you with its romantic pedestrian
centre which boasts a variety of little shops and still
emanates traditional culture. Stroll around the village
and admire the century-old architecture and the many
local landmarks such as St. Jacob’s Church.
The picturesque village of S. Cristina is located at the
end of the legendary Saslong ski run near Monte Pana,
S. Cristina Col Raiser and Seceda. It is well worth a visit for its romantic side streets and informal atmosphere, as well
as for a number of sights such as the parish church, the
early Baroque Gardena Castle and the sun dial at Monte
Pana, which shows the time for a total of 60 villages.
Selva Gardena, meanwhile, is located higher up at an
altitude of 1,563 m above sea level at the sunny end of
the valley. It is surrounded by the jagged peaks of the
Sassolungo and the Sella Group. Selva Gardena is a
pulsating village brimming with life and invention,
which boasts an excellent range of restaurants and
stylish bars, as well as a number of cultural highlights
such as the parish church, St. Silvester’s Chapel with its Ortisei more than 300-year old frescoes, and the ruins of the
