ABSTRACT In feminist theory, there is no greater site of contestation than that of the body. This thesis explores how, often, debates on the body become centred upon a dichotomy between oppression and liberation. There is a vast diversity of scholarship that challenges this binary ranging from post- colonial, post-structuralist and Marxist feminist work, nevertheless, the dichotomy is still in action. This thesis focuses in on this dichotomy through the lens of dieting, to argue that the ‘feminine’ body is not simply a site of oppression or liberation. Rather, I draw upon the meeting points between Foucault’s (1977) Discipline and Punish and post-structuralist feminist scholarship to suggest that power works ‘through’ the everyday language and actions used to construct dieting and fatness. Using Weight Watchers and Slimming World as case studies, I note how processes of self- surveillance discipline dieters bodies through the act of confession and the structuring of one’s time around weight-loss. The underlying aim of the thesis demonstrates the complexities that surround women’s relationship to the body; it is simplistic to suggest that dieting is a product of ‘oppression’ or a tool for ‘empowerment.’ In challenging this dichotomy, the thesis extends criticism of some post-structuralist feminist scholarship, which can occasionally ‘fall back’ into binary discussions of the body. Additionally, the thesis cements itself within the wealth of black feminist scholarship; by exploring the discourses surrounding Oprah Winfrey’s dieting ‘journey’, the thesis addresses the gaps on race and gender within Discipline and Punish. !2 This thesis is dedicated to the memory of Geoffrey Morris. Chandler: dude, don’t do that to me! Monica enters. Ross: it’s OK, you can stay here with my parents. Chandler: no, it’s not that, I just don’t want to be stuck here with your fat sister. In this scene on the US sitcom Friends, the ‘fat sister’ to whom the men are referring, is a character called Monica Geller, a beautiful perfectionist with ‘OCD’ traits. However, throughout flashback scenes, the audience is repeatedly informed that “svelte and athletic” Monica was once fat (Richardson, 2016, p.83). Played by Courteney Cox in a fat-suit, the purpose of ‘Fat Monica’ (as she became known) was twofold. Firstly, she was there to be the punchline of a running joke, with quips about her weight being a constant across all ten series of the show (Harris-Moore, 2016, p. 93). Secondly, ‘Fat Monica’ provided substance to the character of Monica: haunted by her experiences as a fat child and young woman, Monica develops her trademark control-freak tendencies.

    ABSTRACT Title of dissertation : FEMINISM À LA QUEBEC: IDEOLOGICAL TRAVELINGS OF AMERICAN AND FRENCH THOUGHT (1960-2010) Geneviève Pagé, Doctor of Philosophy, 2012 Dissertation directed by: Professor Claire Moses Department of Women’s Studies This dissertation examines the travelings of three concepts central to feminism – gender, queer, and intersectionality – as they move between the United States, France, and Quebec. The concept of gender, central to U.S. feminism, is relatively absent from feminist theory in France and Quebec until the 1990s; rather, drawing on Marxist and existentialist traditions, French and Quebec feminists will deploy the term “rapports sociaux de sexe” to identify that differences among women and men are grounded in social structure and, further, that the two classes, women and men, are constituted in hierarchicized relation. The term queer, linguistically subversive in English but lacking this potential when translated into French, is mainly resisted by French materialist feminists and feminist scholars in Quebec on the basis that it displaces social reality focusing instead on resistance through performance. Nonetheless, in Quebec, activists groups such as Les panthères rose are able to present a version of queer that also addresses systemic oppressions. Finally, the concept of intersectionality, theorized first by feminists of color in the U.S. trying to reconcile their allegiances to multiple struggles, provides a useful tool for analyzing the interaction between different systems of oppression and how they shape the lives of people differently located. In France, a similar desire to theorize multiple oppressions led to the development of the concept of “consubstantialité des rapports sociaux,” whereby social “rapports” of sex and of socio- economic class are co-constituted.

    Art & Activism in the Age of the ‘Obesity Epidemic’ by Pamela Grombacher A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in HISTORY OF ART, DESIGN AND VISUAL CULTURE Department of Art and Design University of Alberta © Pamela Grombacher, 2014 Abstract This thesis considers three contemporary artworks that open up new possibilities for size acceptance activism, a political movement that arose in the late 1960s to combat fat stigma and weight-based discrimination. Fatness is vilified in many parts of the world as an unhealthy, unattractive, and, most significantly, immoral embodiment. This is due, in part, to “healthism,” or the moralization of health, and to the perceived controllability of body size. In cultures where health is viewed as a moral obligation and size is viewed as a personal choice, fat people are discriminated against for supposedly choosing to be unhealthy. Fat stigma has worsened in the wake of the “obesity epidemic,” the alarmist rhetoric of which frames fatness as a lurking and deadly contagion that threatens to destroy public health. There are those within the size acceptance movement, however, who question the legitimacy of this “epidemic” as a true health crisis and suggest that it is instead a moral panic that reflects cultural anxieties about personal accountability. As politicians, medical practitioners and diet industrialists wage a “War on Obesity” to eradicate fatness and thus rid society of this alleged scourge, size acceptance activists resist weight-based discrimination by arguing that stigma, rather than fat, is the true enemy to be conquered. I suggest new possibilities for resistance by analyzing artworks that subvert hegemonic notions of fat in novel and nuanced ways.

Fat phobia is used by the dominant culture to oppress women and keep them „in-line‟ with the heternormative, white, cultural ideals of beauty in the United States. “All Made-Up” argues that fatness is socially constructed via medicalization, political rhetoric, and mother blame. It argues that hyperfeminization is an important form of fat activism, but one that is narrow in its ability to change cultural ideals. Hyperfeminization reinforces cultural ideals regarding femininity and excludes a vast group of women in the process.

Abstract The main topic of this research is the struggle of an African-American woman in facing discriminatory treatment. It is a study on the main character in Margot Lee Shetterly's novel: Hidden Figures. The process of this research involves the overall story, intrinsic elements: character and characterization, conflict, setting and plot and also extrinsic elements: liberal feminisme, multicultural feminism and racism. This qualitative research is conducted by applying descriptive analysis method along with library research technique, leading to the identification that racism and feminism turns out to cause discrimination. The main character, Katherine, undergoes dicrimination on education and employment for African-American people. These experiences eventually prompts the main character to fight against discrimination by proving that she is capable of becoming the first black woman who works for NASA.
