We have a new office in Chicago and three new staff members, Deana Lewis, Jennifer Ash, and Victoria Agunod, who have done an incredible job putting together what we know will be a stellar conference. Many, many thanks for their hard work to attend to every detail of this conference, from childcare to the quiet room to accessibility services. I have had the privilege and honor of working with two amazing co-chairs, Dána-Ain Davis and Robyn Spencer, and a wonderful roster of review chairs who were critical in shaping the content of the conference. This year, NWSA had its largest number of proposal submissions ever (over 1300!); congratulations to everyone, from participants to reviewers, who labored to ensure an intellectually stimulating and inclusive conference. #NWSA2019 will prove to be a busy and enlightening conference with 600 sessions, over 2300 presenters, and over 400 moderators. In addition to our keynote conversation between Keeanga-Yamhatta Taylor and Arundhati Roy, we are thrilled to have as featured speakers Cherríe Moraga, Mishuana Goeman, Margaret Noodin, Aren Aizura, Lynn Roberts, Noura Erakat, Michelle Téllez, Thenmozhi Soundarajan, and many more. The Bay Area is an especially inspiring place to hold this conference given the confluence of organizing and activism around indigenous, LGBTQ+, Palestinian, Latinx, immigration, and labor issues. In addition to panels and papers highlighting Bay Area politics, this year, for the first time, NWSA has formed a local arrangements committee to partner with community organizations and offer locally oriented events. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to attend a tour of the Comfort Women Memorial Statue and a closing celebration at the San Francisco Women’s Building. We have worked with writer, performer, and artist Rosamond King to curate an Arts@ NWSA program with a selection of dance by the Sarah Bush Dance Project and visual arts (including DJ Emancipation at the Welcome Reception!) Finally, we have strengthened NWSA’s commitment to creating a welcoming space for activists, through inclusion on panels and plenaries and financial support with our activist travel fund. We encourage people who are able to make a donation to support travel for participants with limited resources. You can do so on the NWSA website: www.nwsa.org And a sneak preview for #2020NWSA: Our conference theme for next year is “The Poetics, Politics, and Praxis of Transnational Feminism.” We hope it will be an opportunity to reflect on the theory and praxis of the past and future of transnational feminism in a rapidly shifting global landscape. The call for proposals will be issued shortly. In the meantime, mark your calendars for November 12-15, 2020 in Minneapolis! • POETRY, FEMINISM, and PROTEST Introduction
POETRY, FEMINISM, AND PROTEST Introduction In this set of lessons, students will explore the often-overlooked relationship between poetry and politics. Poets like Anne Sexton, Adrienne Rich, and Audre Lorde create vital dialogue about the relationship between the daily lives of women and structures of power. The poems and essays below will be examined through a feminist-activist lens. Ø Anne Sexton, “Little Girl, My String Bean, My Lovely Woman” Ø Adrienne Rich, “Anne Sexton: 1928- 1974” Ø Audre Lorde, “Power” and “Poetry is Not a Luxury” Essential Question: Ø How can poetry serve as a form of feminist social protest? FOR THE TEACHER: ADRIENNE RICH AND ANNE SEXTON 1. Explain to students that after Anne Sexton took her own life in 1974, Adrienne Rich delivered a eulogy for Sexton, celebrating her poem “Little Girl, My String Bean, My Lovely Woman.” 2. Explain to the students how Sexton’s poem is central to Rich’s eulogy of Sexton and helps to better illustrate what Rich and others mean when they try and expand the definition of feminist poetry. 3. Ask your students to read the poem by Sexton and essay by Rich and to complete the attached questions. Then use those answers to inform a class discussion. 4. Feminist theorist bell hooks defines feminism as “a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.” After students have answered the worksheet questions, share hooks’s definition of feminism and ask students to consider how Rich’s essay and Sexton’s poem address feminist ideas or goals. 5. For further reading: In a 2013 issue on women in fiction, Vice magaZine included a fashion spread of seven models depicting famous female writers who died by suicide, but without any mention of the writers’ works.

Debora Spini teaches at Syracuse University in Florence and at New York University in Florence. She is the author of various essays and book chapters in English and Italian on topics such as the transformation of public spaces, crisis of the modern self, secularization and postsecularization. Her current research in- terests focus on the intersection between gender and religion in violent conflicts. Contact: [email protected] A CALL TO LOYALTY: WOMEN’S BODIES, PLAYGROUNDS AND BATTLEFIELDS Debora Spini Syracuse University Florence DOI: 10.17450/170206 Reception date 19th June 2017; acceptance date 19th July 2017. This article is the result of research activities held at Syracuse University Florence. Abstract The article aims at analysing how the use of “feminist” arguments by xenophobic, right –wing and populist discourses– constitutes a specific form of neutralisation of feminism. In European public discourse, women’s freedom is becoming a pawn in a political game that has nothing to do with women themselves. Women’s bodies –posses- sed, re-appropriated, impregnated, covered and uncovered– become battlefields for the “identity conflicts” of late modernity. On the other hand, the aspiration to autonomy, re-narrated in late capitalism in terms of freedom to consume, causes women bodies, exposed, spectacularised, commodified, to become the playgrounds of neo-liberal order (Fraser, 2009). Some trends in contemporary feminism reflect this mimetic version of freedom, thus contributing to make feminist critique suitable to the spirit of new capi- talism and easily manipulated by xenophobic, right-wing populist discourses. Keywords Gender, difference, xenophobia, neoliberal order.

  • Sara Farris and Catherine Rottenberg
INTRODUCTION: RIGHTING FEMINISM Sara Farris and Catherine Rottenberg In the last few years, we have witnessed a perplexing new trend. Following an extended period in which few high-profile women were willing to identify publicly with feminism, all of a sudden - or so it appeared - many well-known women were loudly declaring themselves feminists, one after the other: from the former president of Barnard College, Debora Spar and the current UK Prime Minister, Theresa May, through internationally popular music celebrities Miley Cyrus and Beyoncé to right-wing populists like Marine Le Pen in France.1 Indeed, Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign was strongly 1. Asked if she identifies herself as endorsed by liberal feminist organisations, and marked one of the high points a feminist, Le Pen of a resurgent feminist agenda in the United States with resonances across said that she could consider herself as the western world. Despite her ultimate defeat, Clinton was nevertheless the such to the extent first woman in US history to be nominated as a presidential candidate by a that she defends women’s rights, major national party. Feminism, it seemed, had finally become legitimate in which are threatened the popular imagination in ways that it simply never had been before. by Islam. F. Scrinzi, ‘A new French These public feminist declarations were not the only ways in which a National Front?’, revived feminist discourse began circulating, however. Rather, since 2012 forthcoming. - in both the anglophone world as well as in the west more generally - there has been a virtual explosion of feminist discussion in both popular and mainstream media: from internationally bestselling books, through widely read articles in the mainstream print media to popular television shows.

University of Texas B.A. Miami University March 2010 Committee Chair: Anne Sisson Runyan, Ph.D ABSTRACT What constitutes global civil society? Are liberal assumptions about the nature of civil society as a realm autonomous from and balancing the power of the state and market transferrable to the global level? Does global civil society necessarily represent and/or result in the promotion of liberal values? These questions guided my dissertation which attempts to challenge dominant liberal conceptualizations of global civil society. To do so, it provides two representative case studies of how domestic and transnational factions of the Religious Right, acting in concert with (or as agents of) the US state, and the political opportunity structures it has provided under conservative regimes, gain access to global policy-making forums through a reframing of international human rights discourses and practices pertaining particularly to women’s rights in order to shift them in illiberal directions.
