The White Rose The White Rose was a non-violent, intellectual resistance group in Nazi Germany, consisting of students from the University of Munich and their philosophy professor. The group became known for an anonymous leaflet and graffiti campaign, lasting from June 1942 until February 1943, that called for active opposition to dictator Adolf Hitler's regime. -

Religion and Resistance: An Analysis on the Influence of Christianity on the White Rose Resistance Movement Laura Kincaide HIST 3120: Nazi German Culture Dr. Janet Ward December 1, 2014 1 Because religion often leads people to do seemingly irrational things, understanding a person’s religion is essential to understand his/her actions. This was especially true in Nazi Germany when religious conviction led some people to risk their lives to do what they believed was right, others allowed their religion to be transformed and co-opted by the Nazis to fit a political agenda while meeting spiritual needs, and still others simply tried to ignore the cognitive dissonance of obeying an authority that was acting in direct contradiction to a spiritual one. This paper will examine the role of Christianity in resistance movements against the Nazis with a focus on the White Rose in an attempt to explain how members of the same religion could have had such drastically different responses to the National Socialists. The White Rose resistance movement officially began in June, 1942 when the group’s first anti-Nazi pamphlet was published and distributed, although the activities and broodings of the members far predated this event. The movement started at the University of Munich, where a small group of students, most notably Hans Scholl, Sophie Scholl, Alex Schmorell, Willi Graf, Christoph Probst, and Traute Lafrenz, and their philosophy and musicology professor, Kurt Huber, discovered that they shared negative opinions of the Nazis and began meeting in secret to discuss their dissident political views.i Some of the most dedicated and passionate members felt the need to spread their ideas throughout the German populace and call upon their fellow citizens to passively resist the Nazis. -

Choose to die well while you can; wait too long, and it might become impossible to do so. – Gaius Musonius Rufus All men must die, but death can vary in its significance. – Mao Zedong On the 18th of February 1943, members of the anti-Nazi resistance group White Rose distributed copies of their sixth leaflet at the University of Munich. Before they left, one of them, Sophie Scholl, flung the remaining copies into the atrium from the top floor. She was seen and taken into Gestapo custody with her brother Hans. Being a young woman, Sophie was given the option to recant and save herself, but she refused. In court, she explained their actions as follows: Somebody, after all, must make a start. What we said and wrote is also believed by so many others. They just don't dare to say it out loud.1 Predictably, the Scholls were sentenced to death for treason and executed. While in prison, Sophie discussed her coming execution with a cellmate, Else Gebel, who reported her saying the following: 1 See http://www.mythoselser.de/texts/scholl-urteil.htm for the original German. 2 What does my death matter, if through our actions thousands of people will be shaken and awakened? … I could also die of illness, but would it have the same meaning?2 Well, probably not. Dying for a cause can be more meaningful than dying from an illness, including in the sense of giving meaning to one’s life. -

She is greatly admired for the bold and courageous actions she took to defy the Nazi regime. She and several other members of the White Rose, including her brother Hans, clandestinely published and distributed anti-Nazi literature. Between the early summer of 1942 and February 1943, people in cities in the South of Germany and in Austria found leaflets in their mail boxes calling for protests against the Nazi regime. On February 19, 1943, Hans and Sophie took a great risk by placing copies of a sixth leaflet produced by the White Rose Group in the deserted halls of the University of Munich. After a janitor spotted them, they were arrested by the Gestapo. Sophie, her brother Hans and Christoph Probst were soon tried and executed. The recent film, Sophie Scholl: The Final Days, directed by German director Marc Rothemund, reconstructs the last six days of her life. Based on actual trial transcripts and official police records, this film dramatizes her arrest, her interrogation, her imprisonment, her trial, and her execution. This film reminds its viewers that German resistance did occur and that young adults played prominent roles in the German resistance movement. -
