Signature: Date: Copyright © 2010 University of Stellenbosch All rights reserved iii Abstract The present dissertation is a commentary on Psalms 38 and 145 in the Septuagint (LXX) version, or more accurately, the Old Greek (OG) version. Specifically, this dissertation attempts to understand the semantic meaning of these psalms at the point of their inception, or composition, i.e. as translated literary units derivative of a presumed Semitic Vorlage. Stated differently, this dissertation sets out to understand how these psalms were interpreted in translation by the translator(s). With the task of interpretation comes the assumption that the “original” or “oldest” verifiable text can be first established since neither the OG nor its Vorlage are known to be extant. To this end it is necessary to begin with the best critical editions available while also attempting to reconstruct a viable representative of the OG and Vorlage in the light of standard text-critical criteria and translation technique. Although the Old Greek text is the object of study, the transmission history and related history of interpretation for both the Greek and Hebrew are selectively examined insofar as they are necessary as comparisons for the LXX at the point of its inception, and the Vorlage from which it was derived. This work assumes – in accordance with the way translation may be understood generally – that the translator(s) of the Psalms were attempting to communicate his/her Vorlage to a new audience. In this respect translation may be viewed as communication that crosses a language boundary. As such, both lexical replication and idiomatic representation fall within the scope of interpretation. Both phenomena occur in Ps 38 and 145 in varying degrees and both phenomena comprise aspects of the translator’s cross-lingual communication. Chapter 1 establishes preliminary concepts regarding translation in terms of isomorphic and isosemantic representation, textual criticism of the Psalter, and select MSS and witnesses used throughout the study. Chapter 2 surveys key modern translations of the Septuagint as well as certain trends in Translation and Communication Studies for methodological and hermeneutical approaches. Chapter 3 derives working methodological principles based upon the discussions in chapters 1 and 2. Chapters 4 and 5 are detailed, word-by-word, clause-by-clause, commentaries on Psalms 38 and 145 respectively. Chapter 6 offers a summary and conclusions. iv Opsomming Hierdie verhandeling is ‘n kommentaar op Psalm 38 en 145 in die Septuagint (LXX), of meer bepaald, die Oud Griekse (OG) weergawe. Die navorsing poog in besonder om die semantiese betekenis van hierdie psalms ten tyde van hul ontstaan of samestelling te verstaan, dit wil sê as vertaalde literêre eenhede wat vermoedelik op ʼn Semitiese Vorlage gebaseer is. Anders gestel: Hierdie verhandeling is daarop uit om te begryp hoe die vertaler(s) van hierdie psalms die tekste vertolk het. Die taak van vertolking behels die veronderstelling dat die ‘oorspronklike’ of ‘oudste’ verifieerbare teks eers bepaal kan word. Sover bekend het nóg die OG weergawe nóg sy Vorlage egter behoue gebly. Daarom is dit nodig om met die beste beskikbare kritiese uitgawes te begin, en terselfdertyd ʼn lewensvatbare weergawe van die OG teks en Vorlage te probeer rekonstrueer aan die hand van standaard- tekskritiese maatstawwe en -vertaaltegnieke. Hoewel dit hoofsaaklik die OG teks is wat bestudeer word, word die oorlewerings- en verwante geskiedenis van vertolking vir sowel die Grieks en Hebreeus ook selektief ondersoek in soverre dit vergelyk kan word met die ontstaansvorm van die LXX sowel as die Vorlage waarop dit gebaseer is. In pas met die waarskynlike algemene opvatting oor vertaling, gaan hierdie navorsing van die veronderstelling uit dat die vertaler(s) van die psalms sy/haar/hul Vorlage aan ʼn nuwe gehoor wou probeer oordra. In dié opsig kan vertaling as kommunikasie oor taalgrense heen beskou word. As sodanig val sowel leksikale duplisering as idiomatiese verteenwoordiging binne die bestek van vertolking. Albei verskynsels kom in wisselende mate in Psalm 38 en 145 voor en albei behels aspekte van die vertaler se intertaalkommunikasie. Hoofstuk 1 lê voorlopige konsepte met betrekking tot vertaling vas wat betref isomorfiese en isosemantiese verteenwoordiging, tekstekritiek op die Psalter, en uitgesoekte manuskripte (MSS) en getuienisse wat deur die hele studie gebruik word. Hoofstuk 2 ondersoek kern- moderne vertalings van die Septuagint sowel as bepaalde tendense in Vertaling en Kommunikasiestudie vir metodologiese en hermeneutiese benaderings. Op grond van die besprekings in die eerste twee hoofstukke, lê hoofstuk 3 metodologiese werksbeginsels neer. v Hoofstuk 4 en 5 bevat uitvoerige, woord-vir-woord-, sinsdeel-vir-sinsdeel-kommentaar op Psalm 38 en 145 onderskeidelik. Hoofstuk 6 sluit af met ʼn samevatting en gevolgtrekkings. vi Acknowledgements As with any lengthy project whose progress cannot be accurately gauged on a daily basis, the present work is the culmination of years of intensive work, however obscured by clouded vision and uncertainty along the way.     3 The Issue of Methodology Regarding Inner-Biblical and Inter-Biblical Interpretation: Rhetorical Criticism In our last chapter, we delineated discourse analysis (text-linguistics) as one of the two methodological approaches we will apply in this project. In this chapter, we will examine our second methodological approach, rhetorical criticism, under the rubric of literary analysis. Literary analysis83 has a protracted history that encompasses a variety of methodologies that stretch beyond the scope of this project. While we refer to scholarly works that treat and discuss these subjects,84 our course of action is to focus on one of the methodologies and consider how it can be applied to our study. Literary analysis includes the following methodologies: source, tradition- historical, form, redaction, canonical, and rhetorical criticism.85 Regardless of the methodologies chosen, the aim of applying literary criticism to biblical studies – to borrow John Barton’s term – is for the ‟elucidation” of the biblical texts.86 After reviewing all the critical methods, we have settled on rhetorical criticism. The reasons why we have chosen rhetorical criticism above other methods of literary analysis serve as the subject of our next section. 83 Traditionally, literary criticism is also known as source criticism.     THE MODERN HISTORY OF THE QUMRAN PSALMS SCROLL AND CANONICAL CRITICISM JAMES A. SANDERS At its 2001 annual meeting the international Society of Biblical Literature celebrated the completion of the publication of the Dead Sea Serolls. It was a gala occasion with a sense of the miraculous hovering over the some three hundred who attended. In the previ­ ous five decades eight volumes of the Discovenes in the Judaean Desert scries had been published, but during the last decade twenty-eight more have appeared. Emanuel Tov, Magnes Professor of Hebrew Bible at the Hebrew University, made the difference. In 1990 Tov became the fourth chief editor of the international team charged with thc pub1ications, following Roland de Vaux, Pierre Benoit, and John Strugnell. Tov increased the team from twenty scholars to over sixty. Five further volumes are in the pipeline at the present, which will complete publication of thirty-nine volumes of the scrolls in thc DJD series, over nine-hundred ancient texts all told. Reference vol­ umes will follow. Tov's address on the occasion was stunning. It was a tell-all, detailed history of publication of the Dead Sea Scrolls from his stand­ point, and as only he with his intimate knowledge of the last phases of the enterprise could tell it. I It was a kind of oral history of thc sort Sterling Van Wagner and Weston Fields, an editor of the present volume, and others have recently been collecting from the earlier generation of Dead Sea Scrolls scholars. One weeps over the lost, unpublished records that have languished in widows' and heirs' attics, when the source of the most intimatc kind of knowledge has been totally lost in the deaths of those who failed to complete their work, or who were too modest to publish their memories of what really happened.

The psalmist has sinned (verses 3-4 and 18), but cries out to God not to leave him in such terrible physical and mental anguish. He assumes, according to the mentality of the time, that suffering is willed by God, and therefore must be a form of punishment for sin. He asks forgiveness, but insists that those who are maligning him are acting unjustly (verses 19-20). The title reads: ‘A Psalm* of David, for the memorial offering’, indicating its cultic setting. Psalm 6 opens in the same way.     Cultivate - PSALMS PSALM 126: We now come to the seventh of the "Songs of Ascent," a lovely group of Psalms that God's people would sing and pray together as they journeyed up to Jerusalem. Here in this Psalm they are praying for the day when the Lord would "restore the fortunes" of God's people (vs.1,4). 126 is a prayer for spiritual revival and reawakening. The first half is all happiness and joy, remembering how God answered this prayer once. But now that's just a memory... like a dream. They need to be renewed again. So they call out to God once more: transform, restore, deliver us again. Don't you think this is a prayer that God's people could stand to sing and pray today? Pray it this week. We'll pray it together on Sunday. God is here inviting such prayer; he's even putting the very words in our mouths. PSALM 127: This is now the eighth of the "Songs of Ascent," which God's people would sing on their procession up to the temple. We've seen that Zion / Jerusalem / The House of the Lord are all common themes in these Psalms. But the "house" that Psalm 127 refers to (in v.1) is that of a dwelling for a family. 127 speaks plainly and clearly to our anxiety-ridden thirst for success. How can anything be strong or successful or sufficient or secure... if it does not come from the Lord? Without the blessing of the Lord, our lives will come to nothing.

Introduction to Understanding the Old Testament Scripture promises the one seeking wisdom and understanding that he or she “will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding” (Pr 2:5-6). If one really wants to properly respond to the Bible message, one must know how to interpret it. Certainly many of the spiritual truths of the Old Testament can be ascertained through just a cursory reading of the text, but systematic study can yield far greater benefits. While it is true that in-depth Bible study will take more time and effort, there are principles and methodologies that can serve as guides for making the whole process quicker, easier, and more productive. A. Hermeneutics Correctly interpreting and understanding the Old Testament can be an arduous, often puzzling, but intrinsically rewarding experience. Deciding to begin doing in-depth Bible studies may seem intimidating at first, but a knowledge of the art and science of hermeneutics should prove useful. The Greek verb hermeneuein means “to explain, interpret” or “translate,” while the noun hermeneia means “interpretation” or “translation.” Using the verb, Luke informs his readers that Jesus “explained” to the two disciples on the Emmaus road what the Scriptures said about Him (Lk 24:27). Hermeneutics attempts to help us comprehend what a message—written, oral, or visual— is endeavoring to communicate.

    CANONICAL READING OF THE OLD TESTAMENT IN THE CONTEXT OF CRITICAL SCHOLARSHIP - -■11111.44.0411,■.--- ROLF RENDTORFF In the early seventies of this century a new term appeared in biblical scholarship: Canonical Criticism. It was James Sanders who explicitly introduced this term in his essay Torah and Canon (1972). The discussion on this program was from its very beginning also closely linked to work of Brevard Childs. In the meantime this term and its manifold implications are widely used and debated. Let me first of all say something about terminology. The word 'canon' has been used, of course, much earlier in Bible scholarship, but under a different aspect. We can now distinguish between two main aspects of canon studies. I quote the categorization by one well-known expert in this field: Sid Leiman in the foreword to the second edi- tion of his book, The Canonization of Hebrew Scripture (1991), speaks about two related but distinct categories, not to be confused with each other. The one category may be termed 'canonization studies.' Its focus is on the history of the formation of the biblical canon from its inception to its closing. The other category has been termed 'canonical criticism.' Its focus is primarily on the function of the biblical canon throughout the reli- gious history of a particular faith community. For the latter Leiman mentions explicitly Childs and Sanders, "among the founders and major proponents." In my eyes the first category is very important, not only from a historical point of view but also to understand under what circumstances and religious conditions the canon of the Bible, as we now have it, came into being.

His creations were regarded from an analytical perspective in opposition with Arnold Schonberg’s music, the musical critics trying to limit the compositional amendments of the 20th century to the scores of the two composers. We find this view unjust, the musical wealth of the 20th century stemming precisely from the multiple meanings framed within various compositional patterns by the composers which music history placed among the unforgettable ones. MORIN. In Chapter I Jerome is speaking himself on his method(s?) of translating the 'hebraica veritas'. Chapter II discusses the afflnities between Hh and the other Latin Psalters (some of the evidence should weaken ALLGEIER'S thesis that Hh preceded Hg). Chapter III investigates the relations between Hh and LXX, and especially the all-pervading influence of a.', a', (0', upon Hh (this being the main part of the book: 62 out of 139 pages). Jerome's insufficient knowledge of Hebrew along with some other observations on the nature of Hh, compel M. to minimize the value of Hh for recogniz- ing the Hebrew text on which Jerome was working. It is a great pity that this book will have lost some of its importance before coming into general use, since M.'s book (preface dated June 1955) is based upon HARDEN'S 1925 edition 1) of Hh, which was based upon 9 Mss, and not upon the more recent edition (imprimatur dated June 1954) of H. de SAINTE-MARIE,which is based upon 19 Mss. The use of SAINTE- MARIE's edition invalidates a number of the examples given in HARDEN.
