Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans 20Th Anniversary Alumni Notes Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans 20th Anniversary Alumni Notes The following notes are included for each fellow who submitted an update and are organized by class year (1998 to 2017) and last name (A to Z). An index is included at the back of this collection for reference. 1998 Rajiv Doshi | Los Altos, CA | [email protected] Director, India Program, Stanford Biodesign; Adjunct Professor, Stanford School of Medicine Since completing the Fellowship, Raj followed two career paths in parallel. First, Raj has taught medical technology innovation at Stanford in the medical, engineering, and business schools. He directs a collaboration between Stanford and the Government of India to promote medical technology innovation, training 32 fellows (all Indian nationals). Second, Raj has pursued a career in the healthcare industry, first as a venture capitalist and then as an entrepreneur, founding two companies. His most impactful inventions to date have been a disposable sleep apnea product (Provent) and a consumer snoring product (Theravent), which are both available globally. Raj currently runs Piper Biosciences, a startup focused on non-drug solutions to manage chronic diseases and serves as a Sr. Advisor to McKinsey. Nadine Duplessy Kearns | Washington, DC | [email protected] District of Columbia Program Director, Meyer Foundation Nadine is well settled in Washington, DC, her husband’s hometown, where they are raising two boys (ages 10 and 14). Twenty years ago, when she was named a Fellow, she could not imagine how much the identity of being a first generation immigrant would shape all that she has done and how she continues to engage the world around her. She is deeply committed to working in the social sector to create opportunities for ALL Americans, new and by birth, to fulfill their potential and realize their dreams. Nadine has led in creating the Haitian Ladies Network, a global platform to connect women of Haitian descent to each other for personal growth, professional advancement, and community impact. • George Soros
George Soros George Soros Born August 12, 1930, as Schwartz György) is a Hungarian-American financier, businessman and notable philanthropist focused on supporting liberal ideals and causes.[3] He became known as "the Man Who Broke the Bank of England" after he made a reported $1 billion during the 1992 Black Wednesday UK currency crises.[4][5] Soros correctly speculated that the British government would have to devalue the pound sterling.Soros is Chairman of the Soros Fund Management and the Open Society Institute and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Council on Foreign Relations. He played a significant role in the peaceful transition from communism to capitalism in Hungary (1984–89)[5] and provided Europe's largest-ever higher education endowment to Central European University in Budapest.[7] Later, the Open Society Institute's programs in Georgia were considered by Russian and Western observers to have been crucial in the success of the Rose Revolution. In the United States, he is known for donating large sums of money in an effort to defeat President George W. Bush's bid for re-election in 2004. In 2010, he donated $1 million in support of Proposition 19, which would have legalized marijuana in the state of California. He was an initial donor to the Center for American Progress, and he continues to support the organization through the Open Society Foundations. The Open Society Institute has active programs in more than 60 countries around the world with total expenditures currently averaging approximately $600 million a year. In 2003, former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker wrote in the foreword of Soros' book The Alchemy of Finance: George Soros has made his mark as an enormously successful speculator, wise enough to largely withdraw when still way ahead of the game.

Annual Report 2015–16 1 2 4 Introduction 6 Metropolitan Opera Board of Directors 7 Season Repertory and Events 14 Artist Roster 16 The Financial Results 48 Our Patrons 3 Introduction The Metropolitan Opera’s 2015–16 season featured numerous memorable artistic successes and represented a second consecutive year of nearly-balanced financial results, despite the ongoing economic challenges of presenting grand opera. Six new productions arrived throughout the season, beginning with the Opening Night premiere of the Met’s new production of Verdi’s Otello, alongside 18 revivals. The Live in HD series of transmissions to cinemas worldwide continued, with ten live broadcasts earning a total of $25 million. Combined earned revenue for the Met (Live in HD and box office) totaled $112 million. Total paid attendance for the season in the opera house was 70.6%. Of the 2015–16 season’s six new productions, three marked the sophomore efforts of directors who had made outstanding Met debuts in recent years. Renowned visual artist William Kentridge followed his 2010 success in Shostakovich’s The Nose with a gripping new production of Berg’s Lulu, Penny Woolcock delivered a sumptuous realization of Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs des Perles following her direction of the 2008 Met premiere of John Adams’s Doctor Atomic, and the Met welcomed the first return of Patrice Chéreau’s brilliant vision since Janáček’s From the House of the Dead in 2009 with a new production of Strauss’s Elektra, overseen in New York by Chéreau’s longtime assistant Vincent Huguet following the legendary director’s death in 2013.
