Janz is professor of religious studies at Loyola University, New Orleans, · Louisiana. From the time of its inception as a discipline, the scientific study of religion has raised the question of the universality of religion. Are human beings somehow naturally religious? Has there ever been a truly religionless society? Is modernity itself inimical to religion, leading slowly but nevertheless inexorably to its extinction? Or does a fundamental human religiosity survive and mutate into ever new forms, as it adapts itself to the exigencies of the age? There are as of yet no clear answers to these questions. And religiologists continue to search for the irreligious society, or at least for the society in which religion is utterly devoid of any social significance, where the religious sector is a tiny minority made up largely of elderly people and assorted marginal figures.

    Illyrian-Albanian Continuity on the Areal of Kosova 29 Illyrian-Albanian Continuity on the Areal of Kosova Jahja Drançolli* Abstract In the present study it is examined the issue of Illyrian- Albanian continuity in the areal of Kosova, a scientific problem, which, due to the reasons of daily policy, has extremely become exploited (harnessed) until the present days. The politicisation of the ancient history of Kosova begins with the Eastern Crisis, a time when the programmes of Great-Serb aggression for the Balkans started being drafted. These programmes, inspired by the extra-scientific history dressed in myths, legends and folk songs, expressed the Serb aspirations to look for their cradle in Kosova, Vojvodina. Croatia, Dalmatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina and Montenegro. Such programmes, based on the instrumentalized history, have always been strongly supported by the political circles on the occasion of great historical changes, that have overwhelmed the Balkans. Key Words: Dardania and Dardans in antiquity, Arbers and Kosova during the Middle Ages, geopolitical, ethnic, religious and cultural concepts, which are known in the sources of that time followed by a chronological development. The region of Kosova preserves archeological monuments from the beginnings of Neolith (6000-2600 B.C.). Since that time the first settlements were constructed, including Tjerrtorja (Prishtinë), Glladnica (Graçanicë), Rakoshi (Istog), Fafos and Lushta (Mitrovicë), Reshtan and Hisar (Suharekë), Runik (Skenderaj) etc. The region of Kosova has since the Bronze Age been inhabited by Dardan Illyrians; the territory of extension of this region was much larger than the present-day territory of Kosova. * Prof. Jahja Drançolli Ph. Dr. GJON BERISHA Assistant Professor Institute of History "Ali Hadri", Prishtina Abstract: One of the countries with which Skanderbeg had ongoing relationships and of a particular importance was the Holy See in Rome. In the 15th century, Rome represented, as it does today, the universal center of the Catholic Church (Holy See) and the capital of a powerful political state (papal state). As a Holy See, its jurisdiction extended to all structures of Catholic Church, hence, in Albanian territories as well. The advancement of the Ottoman armies in the Balkans, their approach to the borders of the Catholic Hungary, their outlet on the Adriatic coast, the aim of the sultans to penetrate into Central Europe and to cross the Italian Peninsula, had seriously worried Rome. The concern of Pope Eugene IV (1431-1447) grew even more after the Council of Florence (1439), where his projects for a joint crusade with the Eastern Church prove unsuccessful. It is precisely in these circumstances that Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottoman armies gained a special strategic, political, military and ecclesial importance for Rome, both as a church and state. This study, mainly based on unpublished sources, those published in Latin and a rich bibliography, will treat the role of the Albanians and their warrior-king, George Kastrioti Skanderbeg in relation to the Holy See in the face of Ottoman invasions.

DAINOSE The Sister-Brother Recognition Motif in the Albanian Folk Ballad: Meaning and Contexts within the National Culture ARBNORA DUSHI Institute of Albanology (Prishtina, Kosovo) ABSTRACT. The motif of sibling relationships has been part of folklore since ancient times. In ancient civilizations, a marriage between brother and sister was considered the perfect pairing, as represented by the union of the moon and the sun, with its creative power on life on earth. According to written sources, Paganism supported this belief until the advent of Christianity, which sacrificed the sibling couple on the altar of monotheism, while it is also proven that the prohibition of incest originates from where nature transcends itself, where the social defeats the natural. This paper looks at this phenomenon among Albanians, and examines how it is treated in tradition, by analyzing the cultural background of the motif in folk ballads and in current artistic variations. How does the sister-brother relationship manifest in Albanian folk ballads? What is its origin? What do folk ballads say about the complexity of this relationship through time? I will draw on examples from Albanian folk ballads alongside anthropological theories built on family relationships, kinship, and cultural influences from a comparative perspective. VARIANTS OF ALBANIAN FOLK BALLADS WITH THE MOTIF OF SISTER-BROTHER RECOGNITION The constant element that characterizes traditional Albanian ballads, and others (Delić 2000: 21–42), is the family institution, or, more precisely, family relationships. In Albanian folklore, the motif-based typology of ballads is built on the family relations represented in the ballad: ballads of the husband and wife reunion; the ballads of the sibling (or sister-brother) recognition (Haxhihasani 1973: 125–145); ballads with the motif of wife’s betrayal (Çetta 1974: 9–38); ballads with the motif of fratricide; etc.
