Ballroom Dance: Origins of the Dance

Purpose of the assignment: You will research ONE type of dance that you have learned during ballroom class, and learn the history, origins, and elements of the dance.

Resources: You can use books from the library, encyclopaedias, or websites. ANY RESOURCES THAT YOU USE MUST BE CITED. ANY PLAGIARISM WILL RESULT IN A FAILING GRADE.

Outline of the assignment

1) Title page: The title page should include the name of the dance, an illustration, your name, my name, your class and the date (similar to the cover page that is included in this booklet). Due: April 1,2020 2) Essay: Your essay will contain the following elements. Each paragraph should have one main idea each. a. The city and country where the dance originated. Also discuss some facts about the country. For example, the population of the country, the language that is spoken, the climate, and one attraction in the country that you could visit. b. How the dance is performed. Discuss the rhythm pattern of the dance. Explain each set of steps (example – during the foxtrot, you do two steps away from the circle, two steps to the side, etc.) You may also discuss the attitude of the dance (Is it a serious dance? A fun dance?) c. Discuss what the proper dance frame is for your particular dance. How do you hold your arms? How far apart do you stand from your partner? d. Discuss the character development that you have learned throughout ballroom so far. What has ballroom taught you in terms of the character attributes – respect, responsibility, teamwork, fairness, kindness and caring, perseverance, cooperation empathy, integrity and honesty?

3) Illustration: Provide a hand-drawn illustration of what the dance looks like. The illustration should be in color. 4) Bibliography: On the final page, write down the title of any book that you used, including the author. If you used a website, write down the URL (the www address). If you used an encyclopedia, I will need to help you. Please see me.

* You may either handwrite your assignment or you may type your assignment. * You may want to brainstorm some ideas. * The essay should be approximately 2-3 pages double-spaced. You should have at least 4 paragraphs, each one discussing one main idea. * Your assignment should be bound in some way: You may staple it or you may put it in a project folder. It should look nice when presented to me (just as you look nice when you go to ballroom). * This assignment will count for two marks: One for Art/Music and one for English writing.
