Queens College Student Choreography Showcase 2021 About the Choreographers Alisha Anderson is a professional dancer who works every day to fulfill the highest expression of herself as a human being and an artist. Alisha has studied various genres of dance for over 20 years and specializes in tap, Afrobeat and African dance. She began her dance career at her family owned dance school, Dance Arts Repertory Theater, which had a well known company called Yori that specialized in African dance; and inspired her to become a professional African dancer. Alisha has studied under Randi Lloyd, Lancelot Theobald, Shandella Molly, Jewel Love, Chet and many more. She is currently attending Queens College where she is graduating with a Minor in Dance and a MaJor in Education. Alisha has traveled to Ghana, Senegal and other countries in West Africa to further her studies in African dance. Alisha has performed professionally with Salsa Ache which is a salsa and Afro Caribbean dance company, and currently performs with two of the top African dance companies in New York City, Harambee and Bambara. In 2014 Alisha joined Harambee which is directed by Shandella Molly and located in Bronx, NY. With Harambee Alisha has performed for the African American Museum, Nick Cannon, Vice the TV show and many more. In 2015 she joined Bambara which is directed by Jewel Love, and with the company she has performed for the Tira Banks show, Dance Africa (BAM), numerous African festivals, weddings and much more. Alisha began her teaching career at Layla Dance and Drum school where she has taught for the past three years and enjoys working with the students. -

Morehead State University Class of 1996 Spring Commencement Saturday, May 11, 1996 r•] Academic Costumes The wearing of academic costumes is a custom that goes back to the Middle Ages. Since the early European and English universities were founded by the church, the students and teachers were required to wear distinctive gowns at all times. Although the custom was brought to this country in Colonial days, the requirement for students was soon dropped. The custom for professors was confined to special occasions such as graduating exercises and inaugurations of new presidents. With the increase in the number of educational institutions and the development of new subject-matter fields, some confusion arose in time about the type of gown and the specific color co denote various degrees. To introduce desirable uniformity and set up a clearing house for new developments, a commission representing leading American colleges produced The Intercollegiate Code in 1895. ln 1932, a national committee of the American Council on Education revised this code into The Academic Costume Code. It was revised in 1959. Although not obligatory, most of the educational institutions in the country follow it in awarding their degrees, earned and honorary. The most significant part of the academic dress is the hood. The color of its velvet border indicates the academic field, and it is lined with the color or colors of the institution granting the degree. The hoods of those receiving a Master of Arts or an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters have those same color indications, but each successively higher degree carries with it a longer hood. -

I spent the last three summers learning traditional dance- drumming in Ghana, West Africa. I focus primarily on two schools that I have significant recent experience with: the Dagbe Arts Centre in Kopeyia and the Dagara Music and Arts Center in Medie. While at Dagbe, I studied the music and dance of the Anlo-Ewe ethnic group, a people who live primarily in the Volta region of South-eastern Ghana, but who also inhabit neighboring countries as far as Togo and Benin. I took classes and lessons with the staff as well as with the director of Dagbe, Emmanuel Agbeli, a teacher and performer of Ewe dance-drumming. His father, Godwin Agbeli, founded the Dagbe Arts Centre in order to teach others, including foreigners, the musical styles, dances, and diverse artistic cultures of the Ewe people. The Dagara Music and Arts Center was founded by Bernard Woma, a master drummer and gyil (xylophone) player. The DMC or Dagara Music Center is situated in the town of Medie just outside of Accra. Mr. Woma hosts primarily international students at his compound, focusing on various musical styles, including his own culture, the Dagara, in addition music and dance of the Dagbamba, Ewe, and Ga ethnic groups. -

Types of Dance Styles International Standard Ballroom Dances Ballroom Dance: Ballroom dancing is one of the most entertaining and elite styles of dancing. In the earlier days, ballroom dancewas only for the privileged class of people, the socialites if you must. This style of dancing with a partner, originated in Germany, but is now a popular act followed in varied dance styles. Today, the popularity of ballroom dance is evident, given the innumerable shows and competitions worldwide that revere dance, in all its form. This dance includes many other styles sub-categorized under this. There are many dance techniques that have been developed especially in America. The International Standard recognizes around 10 styles that belong to the category of ballroom dancing, whereas the American style has few forms that are different from those included under the International Standard. Tango: It definitely does take two to tango and this dance also belongs to the American Style category. Like all ballroom dancers, the male has to lead the female partner. The choreography of this dance is what sets it apart from other styles, varying between the International Standard, and that which is American. Waltz: The waltz is danced to melodic, slow music and is an equally beautiful dance form. The waltz is a graceful form of dance, that requires fluidity and delicate movement. When danced by the International Standard norms, this dance is performed more closely towards each other as compared to the American Style. Foxtrot: Foxtrot, as a dance style, gives a dancer flexibility to combine slow and fast dance steps together. -

This dance, now known as “on 2” mambo, or salsa, for its relationship to the clave, is the first uniquely North American form of vernacular Latino dance on the East Coast. This paper traces the New York mambo’s develop- ment from its beginnings at the Palladium Ballroom through the salsa and hustle years and up to the present time. The current period is characterized by increasing growth, commercialization, codification, and a blending with other modern, urban dance genres such as hip-hop. LH/1/0512 LINDY HOP – RULES 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 In all items, not regulated separately in the following, the appropriate conditions stipulated by the WRRC especially in the Tournament Rules shall be applicable. 1.2 Lindy Hop must remain free to allow evolution of the dance. Lindy Hop is danced to Swing music. Lindy Hop is based on 6 and 8 counts. Lindy Hop belongs to Lindy Hoppers. Lindy Hop shall give priority to musical interpretation There are NO syllabus for Lindy Hop 1.3 All competitors in WRRC tournaments must arrive and report to the tournament directors at least one hour prior to the beginning of the event. The specific required arrival time shall be stated in the tournament announcement. 1.4 The concept for Lindy Hop events arranged within the World Rock ‘n’ Roll Confederation is a smaller form of event where the audience, the dancers and the dance should be in focus. The competition should be arranged in a social context, the audience, participators and officials should have the possibility to dance and enjoy the spirit of Lindy Hop. There is no need for a huge arena like concepts and in coherence with Lindy Hop spirit the event can be arranged in Clubs, Theaters and smaller forms of arenas where the audiences can come close to the dancers and the joy and happiness that the dance spreads. How breakdancing taught me to be a technical artist Robbert-Jan Brems Technical Artist Codemasters Hello ladies and gentlemen, my name is Robbert-Jan Brems. I'm currently technical artist at Codemasters and here to present you my talk : “How breakdancing taught me to be a technical artist” I only have been working as a professional technical artist in the video game industry for just over a year, but I have been breakdancing for almost nine years, and dancing for almost seventeen. The reason I am telling you this will become more apparent later on. Just out of curiosity, are there any breakdancers in this room? Well, the good news is that you do not need any breakdance related experiences to understand this talk. The main reason why I wanted to do this talk was because I have the feeling that as a person it is really easy to be looking through the same window as everybody else. What I mean with that is when we follow the same route to find knowledge as everybody else, we end up knowing the same things while missing out on other potentially important knowledge. By telling you my life story as a breakdancer and a game developer I want to illustrate how I reflect the knowledge that I obtained through breakdancing to my profession as a technical artist. So, the goal of my talk is to hopefully inspire people to start looking for knowledge by looking at learning from a different perspective. Once upon a time ... I started dancing when I was around 7 years old. -
