Die verbleibenden Karten bilden den Talon und werden • mit einer höheren Karte der angespielten Farbe als verdeckter Stapel quer auf die aufgeschlagene Karte stechen. -

THE PACK: 32 cards - A K Q J 10 9 8 7, of each suit, clubs, spades, hearts and diamonds. RANK OF CARDS: When a suit is trump the four jacks are the highest trumps, regardless of which suit. The trumps rank in order as follows: cJ, sJ, hJ, dJ, A, 10, K, Q, 9, 8, 7 of the suit named trump. The other three non trump suits rank in order, A, 10, K, Q, 9, 8, 7. When Grand is trump, only the four jacks are trump and rank in order as above stated, and all suits are equal, ranking in order as named above. When Ramsch is played all cards rank as in Grand. When playing Null, Null out of the hand , Null Ouvert, Null Ouvert out of the hand, every suit ranks in the following manner: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7. Note the 10 does not take the K or Q as it does when there is a trump because in a null play there are no trumps. In pointing out the features of the game, in giving the rules, defining the plays, tables etc., I shall be as concise as possible, using no complicated or lengthy remarks, but in short and comprehensive manner, give all the points and information required. ' Its intellectual possibilities are endless, and no card game. Whist not ex- cepted, offers such unlimited opportunity for strategic play and well-balanced judgment. Thoroughly democratic, it was the first game introduced to an American audience wherein the knavish Jacks took precedence of the " royal pair "; and from this character- istic Euchre was evolved. At that time the American card-mind was not sufficiently cultivated to receive Skat. -

De tekstuitgave vormt een onderdeel van de elektronische Woordenbank Nederlandse Dialecten (eWND), op www.meertens.knaw.nl/dialectwoordenboeken/ De Proeve van een woordenboek der Drentsche volkstaal in de 19e eeuw van Helmer Molema uit 1889 is nooit gepubliceerd; het gaat om een handschrift waarvan een afschrift aanwezig is in de bibliotheek van Groningen en op het Drents Archief. Het exemplaar uit de Groningse bibliotheek is door twee vrijwilligers (Petra van Mourik-Visser en Bartel van ’t Lindenhout) gefotografeerd; de teksteditie is gebaseerd op die foto’s. Bij twee onleesbare passages is het handschrift op het Drents Archief (contactpersoon Henk Nijkeuter) geraadpleegd; daarbij bleek dat de handschriften kleine verschillen vertonen. In 1887 had Molema het Woordenboek der Groningsche Volkstaal in de 19de eeuw gepubliceerd. Editorische ingrepen Algemeen: * In het manuscript staan tal van onregelmatigheden in de spelling, die we hebben gehandhaafd, bijvoorbeeld: earpel naast aerpel, -îg naast -ig, o naast ō, enz. * Molema vat de ij alfabetisch op als een y. Daardoor komen lemmata als belijftuchtigen en belijing na belukken. * Kennelijke verschrijvingen van Molema hebben we stilzwijgend hersteld (zoals Juniperus comminus voor Juniperus communis of testiculie voor testiculi). * Grotere wijzigingen hebben we verantwoord door de toevoeging van een opmerking tussen vierkante haken, zoals over het ontbreken van een betekenis bij een Drents woord, bijvoorbeeld: bloedtiend (Hoogeveen) = [uitleg ontbreekt in bron]. * Foutjes in de verwijswoorden zijn stilzwijgend hersteld (zo stond onder schaarte; zie: schaorde, i.p.v. zie: schaord, en onder oetkubbîng; zie: uitkubbing, i.p.v. -
