An established event now in its 32nd edition whose hallmarks include: discovering and promoting new artists; promoting collecting, and exchanging projects and information among professionals and lovers of contemporary art from around the world. The ARCOmadrid Fair is a cornerstone for promoting and managing art in our country and revitalising its gallery sector. Given its commitment to contemporary art, the Autonomous Region of Madrid also values not just the fair’s enormous capacity to make contemporary art accessible to every kind of public, through the variety of activities and initiatives that come under its diverse programme, but also its clear contribution to putting our city on the great art capitals map. Madrid is to become an international focus for contemporary art over the coming few days. It will be playing host to every player involved in the art sector: creators, gallery owners, curators, critics, museum directors, collectors, the international press and the public at large from around the world. Turkey is to be the guest country at this edition, with its emerging market represented by ten galleries to enrich the fair’s offerings and add the final touches to an event that is bound to impress. Artists and galleries converge on Madrid to present their best works every year to Spanish and international private collectors, art museums and centres, foundations and members of the public interested in contemporary creations. We are proud to see the ARCO-Autonomous Region of Madrid Prize for Young Artists has now reached its tenth edition and that its awarded works will go on to enrich the Contemporary Art Collection from the Autonomous Region of Madrid that is now on display at our Dos de Mayo Art Centre in Móstoles. The fair has raised many expectations, not just in the artistic sphere but in Madrid’s considerably large tourist sector, which has been seeing a growing number of visitors every year attracted by the excellent range of cultural events and activities our region has to offer. The world of art is meeting up in Madrid. I call on Madrid’s residents and everyone planning to visit Madrid in the coming days to come over to the ARCOmadrid Fair and enjoy the very best from the international art scene. This year we celebrate the thirty-second edition of the fair ARCOmadrid, one of the most important initiatives in the country for the promotion of contemporary art. Thirty-two years of history have made this fair one of the most consistent projects on the Spanish scene, and over the years it has been an essential date, not just for gallerists, artists and collectors but for all contemporary art enthusiasts and professionals. Every February, ARCO puts Madrid at the centre of the international artistic map, attracting people from many countries, generating parallel initiatives and making the city a celebration of contemporary art for a few days. Over the years, ARCO has evolved under its different directors, from its founder Juana de Aizpuru, to whom we owe the idea, and whom we can now take the opportunity to acknowledge in these pages; through Rosina Gómez-Baeza, who consolidated and internationalised the fair; to Lourdes Fernández, who had to deal with the start of the economic recession. All three were able to detect the changing needs of the times and respond to them, with the constant aim of contributing to stimulating the Spanish contemporary art market and raising the international profile of our artists. The current director, Carlos Urroz, faces the enormous challenge and responsibility of adapting the fair to the new social and economic context which is still taking shape. We can certainly expect to see new ways of doing things in this latest edition of ARCO, including the programme to encourage collecting and to help small collectors, an initiative which we applaud, as this is a type of collector we would like to see develop further in Spain; and the use and analysis of online strategies and tools, such as extending services to galleries by creating an online art shop, and a forum for bloggers (bringing new criticism formats to the table). Another of the essential values of ARCO is its role in promoting Spanish art and its agents. Year after year, the fair’s organisers have made enormous efforts to publicise it beyond our borders, attracting collectors, curators, galleries, artists and critics from outside Spain, and presenting the fair in different international forums each year. One of the most interesting channels for this internationalisation is the “guest country” programme, which links our city and our country to other communities and other ways of approaching art and culture. This year the guest country is Turkey. Turkey and Spain, at opposite ends of the Mediterranean, have strategic roles in the politics of the region, and culture and art
