Starting in the early 1960s, Joel Meyerowitz went out on the streets, day in, and day out, powered by his passion and devotion to photography, in order to study people and see how photographs described what they were doing. In order to catch the vibes he ranges over the streets of New York, together with Tony Ray-Jones and later with his friend Garry Winogrand. Different from Tony Ray-Jones and Garry Winogrand, Meyerowitz loaded his camera with color film in order to capture life realistically, which meant shooting in color for him. While his first photographs are often determined in a situational way, he starts, early on, putting the subject not only in the centre, but consciously leaving the centre of the picture space free and extending the picture-immanent parts over the whole frame. His dealing with picture space and composition, which consciously differ from those of his idols like Robert Frank and Cartier-Besson, create a unique style.

LILLIAN A film by | Un film de | Ein Film von Andreas Horvath Synopsis | english Lillian, an emigrant stranded in New York City, decides to walk back to her native Russia. She resolutely starts out on the long journey. A road movie straight across the USA into the freezing temperatures of Alaska. The chronicle of a slow disappearance. Director‘s Statement | english The starting point for our film and our journey was the story of a Russian woman living in New York City, who one day set out to walk back to her homeland. It was only by accident that she was discovered by workmen in the Canadian boreal forest. Despite their warnings, she pursued her march alone toward the Bering Strait. Her name was Lillian Alling, the year was 1927. To this day she is still considered missing. Her determination fascinated me and the idea for LILLIAN has followed me for 15 years. The deafening metropolis of New York, a rustling cornfield somewhere in the Midwest and a lonely beach on the Bering Strait … If you connect these three places with a line, you obtain Lillian’s approximate route.

  • NATHAN LYONS: Final Chapter
NATHAN LYONS: Final Chapter March 27 - April 2, 2017 Reception: Friday March 31, 7-10pm Affirmation Arts 523 W 37th Street In honor of the renowned photographer, educator, lecturer, author, and curator Nathan Lyons, Bruce Silverstein is pleased to present, in association with Affirmation Arts, Nathan Lyons: Final Chapter. This exhibition marks the first occasion that this legendary artist’s color photographs will be seen by the public. It represents the fifth and final installment of a photographic opus spanning five decades, illustrating the artist’s intention of creating and transmitting a unique visual language through photography. This exclusive first look will be a prelude to his upcoming exhibition at the George Eastman Museum in 2019. Nearly 50 years have passed since the publication of his seminal book, Notations in Passing (1971), born out of his larger, extraordinary body of work bearing the same title. The images comprising this now-iconic compilation would be the artist’s first series of ‘snapshots’. This series sought to document the American ethos of 1962-1974 through the ubiquitous vernacular elements dispersed throughout the suburban landscape. Lyons would often focus on specific advertisements, posters, signage, drawings, and graffiti–lending a voice to the otherwise fading, forgotten script. Notations in Passing was also groundbreaking in its introduction of the artist's keen interest in photographic sequencing, often laying out seemingly disparate images in pairs, allowing a range of meaning to emerge through such juxtaposition. The snapshot, not as product but as process. Unpretentious and yet important, aspiring to nothing but a notation in passing. Things as they are, or what we make of them? In attempting to let objects be, objects and object spaces, to form simultaneously a neutral yet actively observational position, to combine ‘non-photographs’ as photographs.

JOEL MEYEROWITZ April 18 – May 31, 2014 EUROPEAN TRIP: Photographs from the Car THE EFFECT OF FRANCE New Still Lifes, 2012-2013 Joel Meyerowitz, Greece, Corfu, 1967. Gelatin silver print; printed c. 1967, 9 X 13 3/8 inches © Joel Meyerowitz, Courtesy Howard Greenberg Gallery, New York New York – Howard Greenberg Gallery will show two exhibitions of the work of Joel Meyerowitz from April 18 to May 31. European Trip: Photographs from the Car presents forty images from 1966-67 made by Meyerowitz as he traveled in France, Greece, Spain, Germany, Turkey, Bulgaria, Morocco, England, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. The photographs have not been on view since their debut in a major New York museum exhibition in 1968. The gallery will also show Meyerowitz’s new work, The Effect of France, a series of still lifes, mostly made at his home in Provence. “During my European car trip in the 1960s, I often saw remarkable things fly by outside my window, things that would be gone had I stopped to go back to see what they were,” recalls Meyerowitz. “In a way the photographs in European Trip: Photographs from the Car comprise my first conceptual work. I thought of myself as sitting inside a moving camera on wheels, and that the window was the frame which showed me the continuous scrolling of events flying by outside. All those humble instants sped past me and left their heartbreaking beauty on film and in my memory. Life along the roadside still whizzes by at 60 miles per hour, and even though we have all kinds of advanced mechanics, the camera continues to be the only instrument that makes ordinary things seem momentous when we glimpse them in passing and recognize their innocence and beauty.” While living in Provence a few years ago, Meyerowitz was inspired to buy a few odd objects as a gift for a friend he was visiting in Tuscany.

  • Style.Com Reveals First-Ever Fashion Yearbook Awards
STYLE.COM REVEALS FIRST-EVER FASHION YEARBOOK AWARDS NEW YORK, December 27, 2005 – STYLE.COM, the online home of Vogue & W magazines, has issued its first-ever fashion yearbook awards. Some of the highlights include: • Most Theatrical: John Galliano. No contest here. Fashion’s favorite impresario turned July’s Dior couture presentation into one for the history books. • Together Forever: Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana. Never known as low key hosts, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana pulled out all the stops for their brand’s 20th anniversary celebration during Milan fashion week. • Class Cut-Up: Karl Lagerfeld. Whether palling around with Lindsay Lohan or snipping off the tips of his gloves to show off a treasure trove of Chrome Hearts rings, Monsieur Lagerfield always finds new ways to have fun. • Most Entrepreneurial: Stella McCartney for H&M. Not since that other British invasion have masses of women swooned like they did when Stella McCartney’s collection for H&M arrived at the chain’s New York City stores. • Most “Overexposed”: Tom Ford. For a designer who quit the runway early last year, we saw a lot of Tom Ford in 2005, from the Nude perfume launch to that nude photo. • Most Popular: Gwen Stefani. Gwen applied the same technique in putting together the runway show for her spring 2006 L.A.M.B. ready-to- wear collection as she did on her smash solo album. It seems no one can resist Gwen’s charm. For the complete awards list log on http://www.style.com/trends/features/year2005/ STYLE.COM STYLE.COM, a CondéNet publication, is the definitive fashion website, extending the editorial authority of Vogue and W magazines to the Internet.

Souther: Human v. House: A Combat for Couture Command of Luxury Labels HUMAN V. HOUSE: A COMBAT FOR COUTURE COMMAND OF LUXURY LABELS Carly Elizabeth Souther* ABSTRACT As an industry that thrives on-rather than succumbs to- adversity, the couture corporate world demands innovation and encourages risks. When combined with successful marketing and savvy business practices, these risks can result in large payoffs, which exist, primarily, due to the nature of the global fashion market.' Endless consumption drives the market, rewarding fashion houses that cater to current trends with top-line growth and damning those whom fail to suffer decreased net earnings. In order to remain a viable player in the fashion industry, the house must have the resources to market and manufacture the product in a timely manner, as well as incur the costs if a collection is poorly received.
