2011 FESTIVAL GUIDE ACPinfo.org Welcome to the Atlanta Celebrates Photography Festival 2011, our 13th year of celebrating photography across the Metro-Atlanta area! During the ACP festival, Atlanta will be transformed by photography. Hundreds of venues, from your favorite museum to your local coffee- shop, will be infused with the creative efforts of local photographers to internationally-known artists; you might even see snapshots from your Atlanta friends and neighbors! From inspiration to education, ACP 2011 delivers the best in photography, from enlightening exhibitions at participating galleries, to provocative public art installations on the streets of Atlanta. To get the most out of the Festival, grab a highlighter and spend a few minutes discovering your favorites in the Festival Guide. Highlight events that look interesting to you, then indicate your favorites on the calendar at the front of the guide (there is also an index of artists and venues to assist your search for a particular event). Then you’ll have an easy schedule that can guide your month-long photography experience! With so much to choose from, we know it can be a bit overwhelming! There are far too many events and exhibitions for one person to attend, so don’t get discouraged. There’s something for everyone; try starting with ACP’s featured events (pgs 14 - 21) and join us as we explore where photography meets contemporary art and culture. We look forward to seeing you in the coming weeks, and again, we’d love to hear about your Festival experience. A message from ACP At last, here we are on the brink of another memorable ACP Festival! We continue to be amazed by the enthusiasm, generosity and creativity of our supporters; a community that with each passing year represents a wide cross-section of photography-lovers, from age 8, to 80! We’re grateful to you, for your curiosity and interest, to our Board and Advisors for their direction, to our volunteers for their patience and flexibility, to our participants for their creativity and inspiration, and to our audience, for their willingness to be amazed. You all comprise the cultural fabric that sustains not just ACP, but Atlanta as a cultural center, and we thank you all! We are also thrilled for the continued sponsorship of Bank of America. Everywhere you look, Bank of America is working hard to support Atlanta’s cultural institutions. They believe in making Atlanta a better place through the arts. We are, of course, aligned with that belief and are honored to continue our relationship with them. Have a fantastic Festival! Bank of America is proud to sponsor Atlanta Celebrates Photography for their leadership in creating a successful forum for artistic expression. © 2011 Bank of America Corporation SPN-108-AD | ARD1J1U2 It’s undeniable: photography is more popular than ever. Photographs are more than mere expressions of artistic intent, documents of important world events, or cherished, family keepsakes. They are now the means by which we share, communicate, discover, and interact. While it’s unassailable that photography is more important than ever, its value seems to be in question... While the systems through which we create and experience images are changing, the primacy of the photograph remains. Yet, it’s estimated that of the images made with digital cameras, only 15% are ever printed. And how many of those are viewed in a traditional gallery setting? All this upheaval makes for an exciting time! If it all sounds a bit existential, it is (if a tree falls in the forest and no one’s there to photograph it, is it still a tree?) yet the main question remains; how can we continue to meaningfully interact with images, whether they’re presented in a familiar, traditional way, or not? The territory surrounding these questions is teeming with image- makers who explode yesterday’s notions of presentation, artistic intent, and the perceived value of photography. While we wait for the dust to settle, it’s also clear that today’s photography is a lot like the Wild West; the Sheriff fled town, rations are low, and there’s a heckuva dust-storm blazing toward us on the horizon. We hope that, over the course of the Festival, you experience something that gives you the sense of order you’re looking for, or a taste of the chaos you crave. ACP is for you; to deliver exactly what you expect, or what you never thought you’d find. As you explore the many events and exhibitions presented during the ACP 2011, keep the state of the photographic union in mind... ACP-featured guest Zoe Strauss made a name for herself hanging photographs under a freeway and selling them for $5, while Martin Schoeller creates the polished look of multi-million dollar ad campaigns. The Impossible Project is saving us from living in a world without instant-film and Monica Cook creates stop-motion animations that look like nightly broadcasts from the TV station run by your brain’s neurotransmitters. In light of our changing photographic world, we can examine the work of modern masters such as ACP-featured speaker Emmet Gowin and recognize their enduring relevance. It truly is an exciting time to experience photography, to push the boundaries and to celebrate the pioneers!ACPinfo.org | 5 Check us out online! http://festivalguide.acpinfo.org View events by week, by neighborhood, by artist or by venue.
