  • CHAPTER 3 Hong Kong Music Ecosphere
    Abstract The people of Hong Kong experienced their deepest sense of insecurity and anxiety after the handover of sovereignty to Beijing. Time and again, the incapacity and lack of credibility of the SAR government has been manifested in various new policies or incidents. Hong Kong people’s anger and discontent with the government have reached to the peak. On July 1, 2003, the sixth anniversary of the hand-over of Hong Kong to China, 500,000 demonstrators poured through the streets of Hong Kong to voice their concerns over the proposed legislation of Article 23 and their dissatisfaction to the SAR government. And the studies of politics and social movement are still dominated by accounts of open confrontations in the form of large scale and organized rebellions and protests. If we shift our focus on the terrain of everyday life, we can find that the youth voice out their discontents by different ways, such as various kinds of media. This research aims to fill the gap and explore the relationship between popular culture and politics of the youth in Hong Kong after 1997 by using one of the local bands KingLyChee as a case study. Politically, it aims at discovering the hidden voices of the youth and argues that the youth are not seen as passive victims of structural factors such as education system, market and family. Rather they are active and strategic actors who are capable of negotiating with and responding to the social change of Hong Kong society via employing popular culture like music by which the youth obtain their pleasure of producing their own meanings of social experience and the pleasure of avoiding the social discipline of the power-bloc.

India Art Fair, New Delhi The exhibition will present several works that have never been exhibited earlier publicly. The India Art Fair gallery walls were filled with carefully selected quality art works, paintings and sculptures. The collection includes works of many artists. One of the best known Sri Lankan visual artists, Anoli Perera with over twenty years of experience of working and exhibiting in Sri Lanka and internationally, displayed a bright red blood-like aura, at first glance life-like and life-size, but transformed upon closer inspection into a massive, imposing, solid form despite the open fragility of its construction at the India Art Fair booth. The booth was filled with the innovative work of many contemporary artists. ___________________________________________ The fifth edition of India Art Fair was held in 2013. Anoli Perera’s ‘Blue Cupboard’ theme was one of the new works which assumed higher significance before the fair ended. ‘Blue Cupboard,’ in addition to the attractive élan and finesse of art in it, also holds a key to unlock the political debates emerging from contemporary visual art in Sri Lanka.

This research explores Singaporean design education institutes that adopted ‘twinning’ strategies with international design schools over the last 20 years and compares them with institutions that have retained a more individual and local profile. Seeking to explore this little-studied field, the research contributes to an emergent conversation about Singapore’s design history and how it has influenced the current state of the design industry in Singapore. The research documents and describes the growth resulting from a decade of investment in the creative fields in Singapore. It also establishes a pattern articulated via interviews and applied research involving local designers and design educators who were invited to take part in the research. The content of the interviews demonstrates strong views that reflect the growing importance of creativity and design in the local society. In considering the deliberate practice of Singaporean graphic design schools adopting twinning strategies with western universities, the research posits questions about whether Singapore is now able to confirm that such relationships have been beneficial as viable long-term strategies for the future of the local design industry. If so, the ramifications may have a significant impact not only in Singapore but also in major new education markets throughout Asia, such as the well-supported creative sectors within China and India.
