HEADER TK | DEAR BOOK FRIENDS, I love learning new things about National Geographic, and recently I was thrilled to discover that of the more than 60 million images in our world-famous image collection, nearly half of them showcase the stunning beauty and diversity of our own backyard: the United States. I’m delighted to announce that we’ve undertaken a major photographic and storytelling project in alignment with National Geographic magazine: America the Beautiful. In October, we’ll be publishing this gorgeous and gift-worthy volume, featuring more than 300 images from National Geographic’s 130-year history. We’ve sought out prominent Americans from each of the 50 states and six territories, from LeBron James (Ohio) to President Barack Obama (Hawaii) to Tara Westover (Idaho), to tell us what they love about their state in 50 words. In November, National Geographic magazine will feature a selection of these words and images in a special “America the Beautiful” issue timed to the presidential elections. Social media and television will support as well. This promises to be a must-have gift book for what will be a big year in American history. And speaking of great gifts, we’ve worked hard to have something for everyone on your holiday list. Wine lovers will covet our New Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia, the most comprehensive wine book on the market and a key reference for the popular Master Sommelier exam, made famous by the hit documentary Somm. It includes more than 800 varietals and more than 50 wine-growing regions around the world, and features a cover that makes me want to curl up with a glass of pinot noir and read about wine! For the traveler in your life, we’ve got 1,000 Perfect Weekends, a breathtaking compendium of getaways from city escapes to exotic adventures, as well as a new edition of the international bestseller Drives of a Lifetime, completely updated with exciting new destinations and scenic highways. For Instagram junkies, we’ve got our Complete Photo Guide, which harnesses the enormous expertise of National Geographic to help readers take fabulous photos. History lovers will delight in Michael Farquhar’s More Bad Days in History, a follow-up to his popular bestseller, and fans of Winston Groom will love his take on Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Alexander Hamilton in The Patriots. Our completely revised and updated Family Reference Atlas is a perfect resource for the entire family, as is the 2021 edition of our popular Almanac, which is packed full of amazing facts and stunning photos and graphics—a great stocking-stuffer! FIGURE 8.1 I EUROPE Stretching from Iceland in the Atlantic to the Black Sea, Europe includes 40 countries, ranging in size from large states, such as France and Germany, to the microstates of Liechtenstein, Andorra, San Marino, and Monaco. Currently the population of the region is about 531 mil- lion. Europe is highly urbanized and, for the most part, relatively wealthy, par- ticularly the western portion. However, economic and social differences between eastern and western Europe remain a problem. (left) Migration re- mains one of Europe’s most troublesome issues. Chapter 2 Communal Land Management in the Cordillera Region of the Philippines Lorelei Crisologo-Mendoza June Prill-Brett ndigenous land tenure systems define practices of access, use, and control over resources by individuals, clans, and communities. These Ipractices among indigenous cultural communities are circumscribed and modified by varying economic and political transformations as well as national land laws within a diversity of historical and social conditions. This chapter examines the issues of indigenous land tenure systems and communal land management, in particular, among Cordillera communi- ties of Northern Luzon, Philippines.2 The discussion covers three aspects: (i) national land policies and laws affecting the land rights of indigenous peoples in the Philippines, (ii) the character of communal land ownership in different land-use systems and the forms of access to and control over land by landholding households, and (iii) the prospects for communal land 2 Primary data used in this discussion were collected through a research program on ancestral domain and natural resource management conducted from 1997 to 2002, a household survey in 1994, and field work periodically undertaken since the 1970s. The authors wish to acknowledge the support of the Inter- national Development and Research Center of Canada, which funded the first author’s household survey in 1994.
