A match between Molde and Vålerenga on Friday, March 28 marked the beginning of the 2014 season for Tippeligaen, Nor- way’s premiere soccer league. This league, also known as , is Norway’s pri- mary soccer competition and is very popular among Norwegians. The 2014 season marks the 70th season of premiere soccer in Nor- way and the 25th season since the league was officially named Tippeligaen. This was a late start to the season, which began two weeks earlier in 2013. The sea- son spans from March 28 to November 9 and includes 240 games. There are 30 rounds of matches, occurring on the week- ends. The most popular round takes place on May 16. This is known as the “national day of football” because it is the day preced- ing Norway’s Constitution Day and tends to have greater attendance. There will also be a three-week break this season in June for the World Cup Tournament in Brazil. Each year, 16 Norwegian teams make it Photo: Strømsgodset Toppfotball / Facebook into Tippeligaen. 6 lbs. (2 ¾ kg.) lamb breast or shoulder 4 tbsp. flour 1 tbsp. salt 1 tbsp. black pepper corns 2 large heads cabbage

Note: The whole pepper corns hidden in between cabbage leaves and under chunks of meat is part of the “tradition,” but you could leave them out, use ground pepper, or employ a cheesecloth sack if you want to avoid this “annoyance.” Wash the lamb in lukewarm water and cut into small pieces. Blot dry, dip in flour, and layer in the pot with a little more than half the cabbage that has been washed and coarsely cut. Add boiling water until it reaches half the level of the meat. Add salt and pepper. Simmer for 1 hour, and then add remainder of the cabbage. Simmer well covered for about 1 hour longer, or until meat and cabbage are tender. Serve with steamed/boiled potatoes, carrots, and flatbread. Serves 10-12. Spise godt!
