And just as the sun’s rays bathe the 45 four-thousanders, meadows, vineyards and trees of the wonderfully unspoilt landscape in a glorious light, you can also recharge your batteries beneath the peerless Valais sky. We have over 8,000 kilometres of signposted hiking paths that lead past rushing mountain streams and mystical Alpine lakes, spectacular mountain bike trails that wind their way over mountain sides and through dense forests, refreshing thermal baths that guarantee pure relaxation. And even at the height of summer you can still have fun in the snow high up on our glaciers. Apart from that, the sun also lends our natural produce its unique taste. Not only are magnificent wines made here in Switzerland’s largest wine-producing region, but wonderful fruit and flavoursome spices are also grown. And the heart and soul the vintners, Alpine herdsman and farmers put into their work can be felt everywhere. Valais is a land of superlatives. A few examples? It is home to the Great Aletsch Glacier, the largest of its kind in the Alps. The Matterhorn, Switzerland’s most famous landmark, stands in Valais – as does the Grande Dixence, the world’s highest gravity dam. Page 9 2 How to get to Valais Whether you arrive by car, public transport or plane, Valais offers outstanding transport connections in all directions. By car The main thoroughfare is the A9 motorway, which runs to Sierre. In addition, the Alpine passes of Col de Forclaz (connection to France), Pas de Morgins (France) and Simplon (Italy), and the Grand St-Bernard road tunnel (Italy) are open all year round. The Nufenen Pass (Canton Ticino), Grimsel Pass (Canton Bern) and Furka Pass (Canton Uri) are only open in summer. It is also possible to put your car on the train, using the shuttle services that run through the Lötschberg (canton Bern), Furka (canton Uri) and Simplon tunnels (Italy). By public transport There is a guaranteed direct service to Valais from Basel, Bern, Geneva (airport), Lausanne and Zurich (airport) every 30 minutes. What is more, the opening of the NEAT tunnel through the Lötschberg in 2007 has brought Valais considerably closer to German-speaking Switzerland and thus also to Germany. Since then, journey times to Valais from the major population centres such as Basel, Zurich or Bern have been cut by as much as 70 minutes. Within Valais itself, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, RegionAlps, various cable car operators and post bus lines guarantee ideal connections to individual holiday resorts. By air International flight connections via Geneva, Zurich, Basel and Bern airports, all of which are ideally linked to the public transport network. Trails to suit every taste Hiking is one of the most popular activities in the Valais. With over 8,000 kilometres of marked trails, every hiker can find a trail to suit him: to the top of high mountains, through fragrant larch forests and nature parks, following traditional irrigation channels and ancient footpaths, across hanging footbridges or along wine trails. The Valais is a hiking region with much to explore. More information 2. Discovery tours on two wheels Variety is guaranteed on the mountain-bike trails and cycling paths of the Valais: they lead past gushing mountainside streams and mystical mountain lakes, twist and turn across the sides of mountains and through dense forests or across vineyards from Lake Geneva to high in the Rhone Valley. There is something for everyone, for leisure cyclists and sports- keen road racers, for mountain-bikers and downhill specialists. More information 3. Thermal baths – oases of wellness in the Valais The hot water bubbles up from deep beneath the Valais mountains and offers utter bathing pleasure. Soothing and relaxing – the thermal baths are veritable oases of revitalisation. The therapeutic effect of the alpine thermal baths was known to the Romans, and by the Middle Ages the settlements had began to grow up around the thermal springs. Even Johann Wolfgang von Goethe could not resist the allure of the warm and beneficial thermal water, when he heard of the warm springs in Leukerbad on his journey through the Valais to Italy. The Goethe House on the village square still recalls Goethe’s stay in November 1779. More information 4. Winemaking heritage - The Valais, land of vineyards and wines With its 5,000 hectares of vineyards, the Valais hosts one-third of Swiss vine cultivation exploiting many of the advantages the canton offers: spectacular scenery enjoying long hours of sunshine, vines planted on hillsides to gain the most from the sun, numerous varieties of grape (nearly 60) producing a multitude of great wines, customs and traditions giving it a character and identity of its very own.
