Day 1 – Wednesday 17th – Folkestone….

Where do we start???... Well It’s a known fact that traveling down to the Eurotunnel in Folkestone is not the most exciting of journeys and therefore we have planned for all participants to meet up the night before at the Holiday Inn Hotel Folkestone, thus allowing a fresh start to the Exceptional Rides Tour the following morning.

With Riders traveling down to Folkestone from different parts of the Country we have arranged meeting points along the way to able small groups to meet up and travel down to the Hotel if required.

We suggest Riders plan to arrive at the Holiday Inn Express no later than 18:00hrs thus allowing all Riders & Pillions to check in to the Hotel and get acquainted with one another over Dinner. This also provides the opportunity to review the GPX Route files starting from Calais through the Ardennes down to our first overnight stop in historic town of Sedan…

Holiday Inn Express Bed & Breakfast Accommodation also offers us value for money Evening Meal in the Restaurant, as we need to be mindful of an early night in preparation for our early start for Day 2 of the 2020 Exceptional Rides Tour.

Day 6 - Monday 22nd – Ulrichen Switzerland – 5 Passes

Whilst using the Hotel Astoria in Ulrichen as our base we have planned an exciting diary of routes, attractions and activities for you to experience during our 3-day Swiss Alps visit.

Ulrichen Itinerary Options:-

Switzerland’s 5 Passes – Susten – Furka – Neufenen - St Gottard & Grimsel…

This is what we have all come to witness and I can reliably inform you that you will not be disappointed, especially as we can comfortably ride the 5 passes within 1 day, allowing of course for the compulsory Café – Cake and Photographic opportunity stops.

THE SUSTEN PASS

Driving the Susten Pass at the foot of the Gotthard Mountain makes it crystal clear why the Swiss Alps are paradise to a Biking enthusiast.

The Susten is a wide and almost 30 miles long, high alpine road with endless photo opportunities of which 26 are bridges and tunnels hewn into the rock.

And it gets better and better behind every curve.

Susten Pass - YouTube review… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWcb7zXNsq8

THE

The Furka Pass between Gletsch and has a long history since the 14th century. But the real fame for the alpine pass on 2341 meters 7680 ft above sea level came only in 1964 when Sean Connery chased over the Furka in his Aston Martin DB5 as James Bond.

No wonder scenes of the 007 Goldfinger movie were shot here, the Furka is one of the most impressive Alpine crossings in Switzerland, if not the world. Of course today most of the pass is paved and only a few stretches of cobblestone remind us what it was like to cross the Alps hundred years ago.

The Furka Pass is narrow in some areas and climbs the mountainside in a dramatic way.

After driving the Susten and before you will feel confident enough to drive down the slightly more challenging Furka Pass.

Behind every corner awaits another spectacular view and you will realise why the Furka Pass among all the beautiful Swiss alpine passes was chosen to shoot scenes of the 1964 Goldfinger movie.

But remember to ride with caution and don’t become a clever “Furka”.

THE NEUFENEN PASS

The Neufenen Pass in the Swiss Alps is a road that many miss out on, because instead of riding over the Neufenen Pass they will ride the Grimsel Pass and Furka Pass instead.

However we have linked all three of these together along with the St Gottard & Susten to make it a full Days Tour.

Rising 2478m above sea level the is the second highest paved mountain pass road in Switzerland after Umbrailpass. The road is between two cantons, and , and connects Ulrichen and . The best hairpin turns are on the west side starting the climb up on Nufenen Pass from Furkastrasse. After reaching the top of Nufenen Pass there is a mix of long straights and nice switchbacks for the rest of the drive, which is about 37 kilometres in total.

The views are spectacular to say the least, with two small lakes at the top plus you will witness the rising up 4,274m above sea level to the north, which is the highest mountain in the , and the ninth highest in the whole Switzerland.

Also as we are visiting the area third week of June we anticipate we will see significant Snow Drifts.

ST GOTTARD PASS

St Gottard Pass is the King of Alpine passes and the most known entrance gate (or exit point) to the southern part of Switzerland.

San Gottardo is probably the mountain with most myths and Swiss traffic history behind.

The story of the route is that of a long struggle by men to triumph over a hostile nature. Travelling over the San Gottardo you do not just avoid queues on the motorway, but also get one of the most breathtaking views in Ticino.

One can either take the longest historical monument of Switzerland the roman stone paved “Tremola” street with its serpentine curves or the newer street, on which above of Airolo there is a viewing point with kiosk and terrace to stop and enjoy the panorama over the upper Leventina.

Going over the Gotthard massif allows you to see all the historic places that you usually miss out on.

THE GRIMSEL PASS

The Grimsel Pass zigzags trough towering granite, tunnels, past hazy blue water reservoirs and hydroelectric power plants. The 38 kilometre / 24 miles long alpine pass it is also one of the highest paved roads in Europe and has usually only little traffic.

The breathtakingly beautiful mountain road in these pristine landscapes with quaint villages and deep valleys make it an absolute Bikers paradise and rises to 2164 meters above sea level.

When you ride the Grimsel for the first time it will make confident about alpine pass riding with the pass often wide enough to overtake (or be overtaken) & has relatively long straight stretches which allows you to enjoy the wonderful scenery. If you feel the need to stop you will find spaces where it was safe to park and take those memorable pictures.

In the middle of the pass we recommend stopping at Grimsel Hospice on top of a towering peninsula inside the artificial Lake Grimsel.

Thanks to power plants and the artificial water reservoirs it was also the first electrically heated Hotel in Europe.

A historic Hotel is a place to enjoy an authentic Swiss Lunch and to reach the Grimsel Hospice you will also drive over the dam walls which is another eventful experience.

Day 7 - Tuesday 23rd – Ulrichen – Other Passes

Following the completion of the 5 Passes on Day 6 we have also researched an additional 4 Passes to explore taking in some amazing roads and equally impressive scenery and will provide details of these early 2020, however one Pass that we would recommend you explore is the Simplon Pass.

SIMPLON PASS…

Starting out from Hotel Astoria in Ulrichen we travel South West towards the town of Brig and head for the Simplon Pass.

This in turn will bring us out at Lago Maggiore where we will be able to stop for lunch overlooking the impressive Lake.

LAKE MAGGIORE… E

Lake Maggiore extends from the Italian speaking part of Switzerland far into the Italian regions of Piedmont and .

Thanks to its mild climate, there is lush, Mediterranean vegetation along its shores. In the hinterland is a wild and romantic mountain landscape with breath-taking views.

Day 8 – Wednesday 24th – Ulrichen – Zermatt –

As today will be our last full day in Switzerland you have the option of taking in a “REST DAY” and either just stay local or ride up to Andermatt for Lunch and soak in the scenery.

Alternatively to add to the excitement we have arranged to Ride South West through the town of Brig and onto the final “End of Road” in Tasch where we will park our Bikes safely at the Matterhorn Terminal Car Park.

Here we will board Matterhorn Gottahrd Bahn Train Shuttle & within 12 minutes delivers us to the centre of the Matterhorn village of Zermatt.

Zermatt is a Car Free zone so Train & Bus travel is essential and as we as stopping off in Zermatt this is an ideal time to take the mandatory early morning Coffee & Cake.

We then board the Gornergrat Bahn Railway which is a narrow gauge cog railway taking us up to the highest Observation Platform whereby you we witness the Matterhorn in its full glory.

Rotenberg is the penultimate stop and allows access to one of the most famous viewpoints in Zermatt.

Located within a 10 minute walk from the station is the opportunity to take a photo of the perfect Matterhorn reflection.

Day 9 – Thursday 25th – Ulrichen – Epinal

Today we start our steady but progressive return homeward a journey with a host of sights still to be seen along the way, Departing Ulrichen we will be taking some more of those fantastic roads towards and .

You may well have had enough of Mountains by now but one last important sight to behold is looking up at the Eiger – Monch & Jumgfrau Mountains whilst travelling alongside Lake Brienzersee & Lake Thunersee a view you can take home with you.

Staying within the Swiss borders we plan to take you up through Park Natural Chasseral and Parc Natural du Doubs concentrating on maintaining non technical but quality biking roads and tree lined verges.

Most of these roads will not have previously been ridden by many UK Bikers as we have taken time to research interesting and flowing roads with enhanced scenery.

Following a deserved Lunch Stop we then cross over the Swiss/French Border riding up through the Reserve Naturelle des Ballons Comtois well know for its numerous sweeping and wide open Hairpin Bends.

As we continue up through the Vosges & having travelled this way then it would be rude not to stop for afternoon Tea and at least ride along Lake Gerardmer on our last leg to our overnight stop in Epinal.

Lake Gérardmer is the biggest natural Lake in the Vosges. This Glacial Lake is located 660 metres above sea level in the municipality of Gérardmer, close to the town centre.

In the winter, when it freezes, the lake can be seen from the slopes of the ski resort, a superb spectacle!

But – Its June so sorry NO Frozen Lakes for us….

Day 9 – Continued

Following the early departure from Switzerland some 10 hours previous and the awesome roads we will have ridden during the course of the day we will welcome our arrival at the Best Western Hotel in Epinal.

Best Western Plus - Epinal….

Epinal is a “Stop Over” location on this Tour, which enables us to have a further 3 days of unbelievable roads and relaxed sight-seeing.

So after a long day we recommend eating in the Hotel this evening so that we can have an early night and early start next morning in preparation for the compact Day 10 itinerary onto Reims.

Might be worth taking advantage of the Pool & Jacuzzi before Dinner just to recharge the Batteries for tomorrows stunning roads and places to visit.

If you think the roads today have been impressive then Day 10 will bring your taste buds alive with roads you wished you had ridden before… Not fast but just continual flowing and progressive with very little traffic.

Exceptional Rides Day 9 Travel Information:-

Planned fuel & comfort breaks approximately every 2 hours - Plus light lunch along the way.

Distance: 219 Miles In the Saddle: 7 Hours Total Travel Time: 8:5 Hours inc. stops

Day 10 – Friday 26th – Epinal – WW1 Memorials – Reims

Albeit that we are on our return journey home we still have a lot to do and see and we have not forgotten to keep the roads safe and interesting - Where have the last 9 days gone?

Our first main sight-seeing stop will be at the unbelievable St. Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial which is located at the west edge of Thiaucourt, France. A staggering 40.5 acres cemetery containing the graves of 4,153 American military who died from World War 1.

Cemetery’s are not something that you can get excited about or necessarily plan to visit but this is unquestionably a reality check and an exception to the rule as this, out of all the WW1 Memorials we have visited over the years, will blow your mind. It is fair to describe it as a ‘Stunning” memorial to those, as did many others, lose their lives over 100 years ago…

From St Mihiel we ride onto the Memorial de Verdun for a brief visit before taking in a late Lunch at Abris des Pelerins Café & Bar allowing us to reminisce on what we have witnessed so far today at the WW1 Cemeteries & Monuments.

Mémorial de Verdun – Champ de bataille

Having had our History lesson for the day we depart Verdun and take 70-mile rural ride across country to our overnight stay at the Holiday Inn in the vibrant city of Reims where there are a host of excellent Bars & Restaurants for you to investigate and enjoy…

Abris des Pelerins Café & Bar

Day 10 – Continued – Holiday Inn – Reims

Holiday Inn Reims…

Situated within a two minute walk of the City Centre the Holiday Inn ticks all the boxes when it comes down to location and easy access plus safe Garage Parking for the Bikes.

A few of us on this years Exceptional Rides Tour will have stayed at the Holiday Inn previously and will appreciate that the Restaurant is on the Top Floor which provides commanding views of the City and can be enjoyed whilst having Breakfast.

Bedrooms may not overlook the city but the best way to experience the atmosphere is to walk up into the main centre where you will find a host of amazing Bars & Restaurants.

Although we are only in Reims for 1 night and especially if you have not been here before then it’s well worth the 10-minute walk from the City Centre to visit Reims Cathedral – An amazing work of Art.

Day 11 – Reims - Circuit de Reims-Gaux - Ulster Tower - Montreuil sur Mer

OK Day 11 – Last day before we head back to those fabulous UK Roads & fantastic M20/M25 Traffic delays. But let’s first focus on what is going to be an awesome days Biking with some sights that you will undoubtedly not have visited before, starting with the Circuit de Reims-Gueux situated some 15 kms South West from Reims Centre.

The Reims Gueux circuit is situated on the western edge of Reims, between the communes of Thillois and Gueux.

The Circuit stretches to 7.8 km in length and was made up of secondary roads and a section of the N31.

The circuit was first used in 1926 for the first Grand Prix de la Marne organised by the Automobile Club of Champagne. In 1938, the Automobile Club of France used it for the French Grand Prix, & the first official Formula 1 course was in 1950.

The circuit was used for Formula 1 for the last time in 1966, the last meeting was held in 1969 and the last competition in 1972. It was finally closed as a result of financial problems after hosting fourteen French Formula 1 Grand Prix races. A large part of the stands and a portion of the course can still be seen today. An association, Les Amis du Circuit de Gueux, are currently working to save this legendary circuit with the aid of Lottery Funding:

www.reims-tourism.com/circuit-automobile-de-reims-gueux/gueux/pcucha051v5072yi

We will take the opportunity of a 20-minute tour of the Pits & Paddock area and take the statutory group “Photo Shoot”. I will guarantee that over Dinner later in the evening you will all be talking about the experience and atmosphere of this unmistakable piece of Motorsport History… From here we could choose to take the traditional straight French roads but we plan to do something a little more exciting by cutting across country where you will experience a lot more character, fun and excitement onto the Best Western Hotel in Montreuil sur Mer.

Day 11 – Continued

Leaving Reims Gueux and staying with the theme of WW1 Memorials we will set off across the Champagne regions of France taking in the stunning number of “Champagne” Chateau’s along the way.

Believe me nothing prepares you for the splendour of these magnificent buildings and what they must have cost to built over 250 years ago.

The two most iconic memorials on todays ride are the Thiepval Memorial and Ulster Memorial Tower.

We will have time to visit the Museum, which has much to absorb, and you will be able to witness the atmosphere and grandeur of what happened in this area.

The Ulster Tower is a much smaller memorial but by no means less significant but there is for the want of the correct description an element of charm about the Tower and its surroundings.

At the rear of the Tower it hides one of the best Café’s for miles around where we will be stopping for Lunch and listening to the historic tales the locals share with the visitors.

Day 11 – Continued…

BEST WESTERN Heritage Hotel - Montreuil sur Mer

Upon arrival at the Best Western Heritage Hotel we will without doubt stir the locals of Montreuil sur Mer as this quaint little French town.

Montreuil offers us the ideal location for our final nights’ accommodation.

We will round the Tour off with a farewell Evening Dinner in our own Dining Room and later have the opportunity to stroll around the Town and appreciation established history.

Situated only 40 miles South West of the Calais Eurotunnel this allows us to have a relaxed morning Breakfast and a leisurely ride back to Calais to catch a midday crossing and home in the same day without any need for additional Hotel Accommodation.

Planned fuel & comfort breaks approximately every 2 hours - Plus light lunch along the way.

Exceptional Rides Day 11 Travel Information:-

Distance: 160 Miles In the Saddle: 4:5 Hours Total Travel Time: 8:0 Hours inc. stops

Hotel Website: https://www.hermitage-montreuil.com/fr/ Safe Bike Hotel Parking.

Day 12 – Montreuil sur Mer - Calais

Today – Final Day we return to the UK with a shortened 40 mile ride from Montreiul sur Mer to the Eurotunnel and onward to the UK… Eurotunnel Crossings will be booked for 13:00hrs local time, which allows us to be back in the UK for around midday…

Distance: 40 Miles In the Saddle: 1:25 Hours Total Travel Time: 1:25 Hours

From here it's a fond farewell – until the next one…..
