Grimsel Test Site (GTS) Information sheet Visitor season is from the end of May to the middle of October, Monday to Saturday The Grimsel Test Site (GTS) is located at an altitude of 1730 m a.s.l. above Meiringen in Canton Bern. It is constructed in the granite formations of the Aar Massif, some 450 m beneath the Juchlistock mountain. The tunnel system is around 1 kilometre long and offers ideal conditions for performing a range of research projects. Today, more than 20 partner organisations are involved in the work at the GTS. How do I register a visitor group? • Visits are possible only if the date is arranged in advance (see contact address). You will then receive the registration documents by post. The form "Visitor Application" should be sent to Nagra at least 6 weeks before the visit. Around 4 weeks before the date, you will receive written confirmation from us. The visitor list should then be returned to Nagra at least 2 weeks before the visit. Contact address • Nagra ● National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste ● Hardstrasse 73 ● CH-5430 Wettingen ● Tel. +41 56 437 11 11 ● [email protected] ● www.nagra.ch Arrival and departure • Visitors are responsible themselves for organising transport to and from the agreed meeting-point, which is usually Gerstenegg. • Groups of more than 10 persons should attempt, where possible, to arrive by bus (coach). Access to the tunnel is not possible with double-decker buses. The maximum permissible vehicle height is 3.80 m and the maximum width is 2.55 m. • The meeting-point with the Nagra guide is usually Gerstenegg (cable-car station of Kraftwerke Oberhasli AG, KWO). See situation plan. • For organisational reasons, we ask you to please observe the agreed arrival time. In the case of late arrival, we may be obliged to shorten or cancel the tour of the Test Site. • In the case of adverse weather conditions – particularly during the winter months (October – May) – the road over the Grimsel pass is closed; following prior agreement the meeting-point will then be the Handeck cable-car station (see situation plan). It is possible that the visit may have to be cancelled at short notice for safety reasons. General • The visit to the Test Site, consisting of a presentation followed by a tour of the tunnels, lasts approximately 2 hours. A visit to the crystal cave requires a further 30 minutes. If the group plans to tour the Kraftwerke Oberhasli (KWO) facilities, the visit to crystal cave can be combined with this. Tel. KWO 033 982 20 11. • The tour is not suitable for children under 12. • Please note that, during the tunnel tour, the group will be required to walk and stand for around 1 hour. There is no seating in the tunnels. • A group should consist of 10 – 50 persons. Smaller groups may be required to join another group and groups of more than 50 may have to be divided up. • The visit to the Test Site is free of charge. • There is no smoking in the GTS! • During the tour of the tunnels, the group must stay together! • Sensible footwear (rubber soles) is recommended. • The temperature in the tunnels is approx. + 14°C all year round (warm clothing is recommended).
