Conditions will be encountered in mountains that have a significant effect on. military operations. Mountain operations require, among other things^ special equipment, special training and acclimatization, and a high decree of self-discipline if operations are to succeed. Mountains of military significance are generally characterized by rugged compartmented terrain witn\steep slopes and few natural or manmade lines of communication. Weather in these mountains is seasonal and reaches across the entireSspectrum from extreme cold, with ice and snow in most regions during me winter, to extreme heat in some regions during the summer. AlthoughNthese extremes of weather are important planning considerations, the variability of weather over a short period of time—and from locality to locahty within the confines of a small area—also significantly influences tactical operations. Historically, the focal point of mountain operations has been the battle to control the heights. Changes in weaponry and equipment have not altered this fact. In all but the most extreme conditions of terrain and weather, infantry, with its light equipment and mobility, remains the basic maneuver force in the mountains. With proper equipment and training, it is ideally suited for fighting the close-in battfe commonly associated with mountain warfare. Mechanized infantry can\also enter the mountain battle, but it must be prepared to dismount and conduct operations on foot.

    THE • VOL. LIII NOVEMBER I 942 NO. 265 THE NORDEND OF MONTE ROSA BY T. GRAHAM BROWN Substance of a lecture delivered before the Alpine Club, December g, 1941. T is curious to reflect that the ascent of the N ordend might have been one of the most popular in the Alps had the Dufourspitze been but 83 ft. lower. As things are, the mountain is relatively neglected. The usual route to its graceful summit lies off the beaten track, and more .often than not the N ordend is omitted during traverses of the Monte Rosa peaks ; parties from the Marinelli hut seem almost invariably to take the easier but more dangerous route to the Dufour­ spitze in preference to the more difficult ascent of the N ordend by its stupendous Macugnaga face ; the sensational Frontier arete, 1 which plunges to the Jagerjoch in vertical steps, has rarely been visited ; and (to the best of my knowledge) the wide and steep Weisstor (or N.E.) face of the N ordend has so far received attention from but a single climbing party. To these striking neglects may be added a fifth: on only one former occasion, and that was nearly thirty years ago, has the Nordend been the subject of a paper read before the Club.2 The event deserves to be recalled, because it was then that E. A. Broome described his expedition of 191 I, when, in the course of the day, he ascended the Macugnaga face from the Marinelli hut and descended by the ordinary route to the Riffelhaus the memorable achievement of a great climber who was in his sixty-seventh year at the time of the ascent.

    The Romansch Way The most beautiful ski-ramble in the Engadine WALTER LORCH For some 150 years Brits have climbed, ski'd and charted the Alps. In 1861 members of the Mpine Club established the 'High Level Route' known today as the Haute Route - the classic crossing from Chamonix to Zermatt and Saas Fee. Early this century Arnold Lunn introduced the world to downhill racing and ski slalom, landmarks indeed. Over the past 20 years the Nordic ski has infiltrated the Alps, Brits being notable by their absence. Ski de randonnee to the French, Skiwandern and Langlauf to the German-speaking people and cross-country skiing to the English-speaking world, has brought a third dimension to the world of skiing: independence from the clutter and queues of mechanical transportand access to fairy-tale lands away from the crowds. But, most important of all, ski-rambling gives a sense of physical well-being and achievement known so well to sailors and mountaineers. The choice of terrain is endless and the cost low. After more than half a century of ski-mountaineering and downhill skiing, with an occasional excursion on Nordic skis, I decided to explore this new, yet ancient mode of snow travel over true alpine territory. The Engadine appealed most and, finally, two factors decided my choice: firstly, the Engadine is different from the rest of Switzerland. So is the language. So are the people. So is the weather. While the sun shines in Sils and Scuol, the rest of Switzerland may be covered in mist. The route leads along the River Inn, across frozen lakes, flanked by the panorama of the Engadine giants, loved by every skier.

    SLF Wochenbericht www.slf.ch Oktober 2014: Zuerst nur Schnee im Hochgebirge, dann Wintereinbruch im Nordosten Am 11. und 13.10. brachte eine Staulage dem Süden ergiebigen Niederschlag , doch fiel dieser nur auf den höchsten Gipfeln als Schnee (vgl. Abbildung 1). Vom 21. bis 23.10. brachte ein Nordstau dem Nordosten viel Schnee bis in mittlere Lagen. Danach war es wiederum sonnig und mild, so dass in der Schweiz der viert wärmste Oktober seit Beginn der Messungen vor 150 Jahren resultierte (siehe Klimabulletin von MeteoSchweiz). Allerdings war der Wärmeüberschuss in den Bergen weniger ausgeprägt als im Flachland, wo teils neue Maximalwerte gemessen wurden. Der Oktober brachte dem Wallis teils nur halb so viel Niederschlag wie üblich, dem Tessin gebietsweise das Doppelte. Im Oktober wurden drei Lawinenbulletins herausgegeben. Mit den zwei ergiebigen Niederschlagsperioden und den teils starken Winden kam es zu spontanen Lawinenabgängen und mindestens drei Personenauslösungen.
