Current Position

2013-2016 Principal, Andy Patrick Consulting, San Francisco, CA The consulting practice is focused on strategic planning across all functions of technology start-ups including branding, product development, social media, marketing and sales, revenue growth, organizational development, online product vision, funding, partnerships and business development strategies. Client projects have included: - creating and implementing a partnership program for the largest live online learning platform in the creative industry; - development of a launch plan and funding strategy for an app; - creation of a product road map for an industry-leading SaaS platform; - revamping the business model and marketing plan for an online platform; - comprehensive branding, product development and business modeling for a crowdfunding platform; - mentoring four CEOs. This work leverages twenty years of experience in leadership positions in the Internet, e-commerce, entrepreneurial, photography and creative professional sectors.

Career History

2005-2013 Co-Founder, President & CEO, liveBooks, Inc., San Francisco, CA Within one year of launch, liveBooks created a paradigm shift for how creative professionals market themselves. Became the world’s leader in the design and development of online portfolio websites for professional photographers. Responsible for establishing the overall vision and leadership across all functions of the organization including people, branding, marketing, business development, product strategy and technology. Actively involved in establishing an office in Romania. Interviewed and hired over thirty employees in Romania and an additional forty employees in the United States. Profitable in year three on revenues of $4.6M, and in 2008 successfully led a business model transition to SaaS, attracting $7M in outside funding to bridge the transition. With 15,000+ of the world’s top creative professionals as clients and known for an elegance in design, superior customer service, drag-n-drop ease of use and superb quality, the company was acquired by WWLB Management in 2013.

2004-2011 Co-Founder, All Roads, Society, Washington DC Approached by Explorer-in-Residence and Anthropologist Wade Davis and National Geographic Society Fellow and world-renowned documentary photographer Chris Rainier to create a business plan for an international photography program focused on indigenous photographers documenting their own cultures. The highly successful program developed an Advisory Board of the who’s-who in photography, including David Friend of Vanity Fair, creative consultant Mary Virginia Swanson, the legendary photographer from Reza Deghati, Bangladesh-based photographer and scholar Shahidul Alam, New York Times photo editor Kathy Ryan, and Director of Photography at National Geographic Traveler Dan Westergren. Developed annual training program for the international group of winners including best practices in marketing, sales, distribution and creation of a sustainable business model for photojournalists, fine art and documentary photographers. Secured funding from for-profit and grant-making organizations.

2001-2010 Co-Founder & CEO, FiftyCrows Foundation, San Francisco, CA The preeminent organization dedicated to advancing the role of documentary photography as a medium for communicating challenging social messages worldwide. Seasonally, it produced the prestigious International Fund for Documentary Photography Awards for the best long- term photographic essays. Developed and conducted countless workshops, exhibitions, special events, websites and multimedia projects providing exposure to millions of viewers worldwide. Secured funding from for-profit, individuals and grant-making organizations to sustain a fully- staffed organization for six years. Led the vision and collaborated with architect Sim Van der Ryn to develop the first eco-renovated, solar-powered office and gallery building in San Francisco, which housed the FiftyCrows organization. In 2013, the entire FiftyCrows Archive was donated to the the nation’s leading museum of photography and one of three finest libraries of photographic literature in the world – George Eastman House in NY.

1999-2001 Founder & CEO, BluePearl Internet Group, San Francisco, CA Formed as a development partner to the UB Group of Bangalore, India to create a national Internet provider, Internet cafes and technology learning centers under the Kingfisher brand. Worked extensively with Indian industrialist, Chairman of UB Group and member of the Indian Parliament, Dr. Vijay Mallya, as well as the leading Indian journalist and author MJ Akbar. Traveled extensively to develop partnerships with CEOs of the top software and web development companies throughout India.

1999-2001 EIR & General Partner, eSeed Capital, LLC, San Francisco, CA Recruited to be the Entrepreneur-in-Residence at this early-stage technology venture firm established in 1999 and funded by icons of Silicon Valley including Arthur Rock, Sandy Robertson, Chuck Schwab, and Scott Heldfond. Reviewed pitches to identify commercially-viable investment opportunities, provided real-world insights about the entrepreneurial process in the new Internet economy, and offered expertise in operational aspects of technology start-ups.

1996-1999 Co-Founder, EVP & COO, Adjacency, Inc. San Francisco, CA Co-founded this groundbreaking strategic web design and development consultancy that created the first websites and e-commerce for the world’s greatest brands. Led all operational, people management, client strategy, marketing and financial activities from leading million-dollar office renovations in San Francisco during the first days of the dot.com boom – from hiring and managing 73 individuals in all departments of the business, including the creation of new disciplines such as information architecture. Worked directly with the CEOs such as Steve Jobs at Apple, Richard Branson at VirginMegastore, Yvon Chouinard at Patagonia, Dan Nordstrom at Nordstrom, and top executives at Tag Heuer, Rollerblade, Specialized Bike, LandRover, Caterpillar and Lufthansa to create their first online strategies. Identified the shifting nature of the industry in late 1998 and made a recommendation to partners that we move to acquisition. Engaged Robertson Stephens as investment banking partner and collaborated on all aspects of the highly successful acquisition by Sapient in early 1999, a full one-year prior to the bursting of the dot.com bubble.

1993-1996 Director Strategy & Development, Planet Design, Madison, WI Evolved a three-person print design firm into a 20-person multi-disciplinary agency by closing leading-edge client projects from Citibank's first Internet banking on 3.5” floppy disks – from a web-based educational program for National Geographic's International Arctic Project that streamed live to hundreds of schools via a partnership with Scholastic – from comprehensive corporate identity and branding projects for leading companies in the healthcare, software, music, and food & beverage industries.

1991-1993 Co-Founder & Executive Director, MadHousers of Chicago, Chicago, IL Founded this non-profit, inspired by the original designs of Bailey Pope in Atlanta, to provide emergency shelter for homeless individuals on the streets of Chicago. Led the growth into an all volunteer organization of over 300 people with donated building space, tools and materials while gaining front- page awareness of homeless issues in national newspapers and magazines including the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, New York Times, and The Progressive. These activities inspired people across the country to form their own MadHousers groups, offering dignity, safety and shelter to hundreds of people across the country.

1990-1992 Database Marketing Specialist, Creative Access, Chicago, IL Leveraged emerging database and ink-jet technologies to create a marketing consultancy focused on companies selling to the creative communities. Accomplished enormous cost efficiencies while enabling greater knowledge-gathering about clients and prospects for highly targeted marketing messages. Clients included Apple, Aldus, Adobe, the majority of the stock photography houses and fine printing paper companies.

1987-1989 Co-Founder, EVP & CFO, Chicago Marketing Services, Inc. Chicago, IL The first full-service direct marketing production house in the country doing computerized personalized direct mail printing and fulfillment, quickly became the largest mailer at the Chicago Branch of the United States Postal Service with bluechip clients including Montgomery Ward. Earned a reputation of being professional, transparent and leading-edge in a business historically perceived to be exactly the opposite. Company acquired.

2012-2014 Founding Board Member, LikeMinded.org, San Francisco, CA Currently in start-up mode, LikeMinded is focused on creating an online platform for civic leaders, helping them to create and distribute compelling stories about effective projects, enabling greater access to funding and resources, and expanding leadership capabilities and best practices.

2007-2014 Board Member, Kinsey Institute, Bloomington, IN Presented to the Board about leading-edge Internet technologies and how they might be leveraged to further the goals of the Institute. Helped to concept and shape the 10ML initiative. Took a sabbatical from the Board in 2009 and remain as special advisor to the Board and Board Chairman.

2001-2005 Founding Board Member, Healing the Divide, New York, NY Recruited by Richard Gere to assist in the development of his foundation to preserve the culture of the Tibetan Diaspora. Healing the Divide produced a number of historic events featuring the Dalai Lama in NYC’s Central Park and a highly successful fundraising concert at Lincoln Center featuring Tom Waits, The Gyoto Monks and Philip Glass.

2000-2002 Board Member, Foundation for National Progress, San Francisco, CA For over thirty years, the mission of the FNP has been to produce revelatory journalism that in its power and reach seeks to inform and inspire a more just and democratic world. The primary program of FNP is Mother Jones magazine. My focus was on helping to move the publication to a successful online format with a readership of 1.3 million unique visitors per month.

1992-1993 Founding Board Member, Streetwise, Chicago, IL A street magazine sold by people without homes or those at-risk for homelessness in Chicago. Topics covered what was happening in Chicago at the time. In 2003, it had the largest readership of any street publication in the United States of America. 1991-1993 Founder Board member, Mad Housers of Chicago, Chicago, IL Led the Board through difficult political and legal issues surrounding the activities of the organization, interaction with numerous government and non-governmental entities, and the national media.
