The assignment for the multimedia lab class had been to bring in a powerful image representing love. “We’re going to ask you to think visually in a way that you’ve never done before,” Allison de Fren told her class recently at Taper Hall. Each student sat at a large comput- er screen depicting images such as an iPod, the cover of “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” album, a mother breast- feeding her baby and primates snuggling. Bruce Zuckerman, professor of religion, holds up an ancient cylinder seal, while Georgiana Nikias, a senior majoring in archaeology and De Fren was a teaching assistant English, looks on. Nikias and her classmates do original research on the seal in a new multimedia course offered by USC College. in a pilot program launched this fall, dubbed Multimedia in the Core. In spite of its relatively open, democratic, and pluralistic (though flawed and military-dominated) political system, however, for most of the post- WWII period Turkey’s economic structure and patterns of development bore an uncanny resemblance to the regional norm of underperformance and unfulfilled potentials. Although largely bereft of abundant natural resources and export commodities, Turkey was nonetheless saddled with a state-dominated, inward looking, uncompetitive, corrupt, and inefficient economy that was beset with anemic growth and chronically high levels of inflation, unemployment, disparity, mismanagement, debt, and deficit. The primary foundations for economic takeoff, including the dismantling of import substituting industrialization, encouragement of private initiative, retreat from autarky, and embrace of export led growth, were laid during the premiership/presidency of Turgut Ozal in the 1980’s. Nevertheless, the 1980’s were also a time of turmoil and disruptive transition during which inflation averaged 75 percent and the ratio of government debt to GDP was consistently and excessively high. The period also witnessed the emergence of cozy and unsustainable relations between the government, bureaucracy, banks, and corporations, which paved the way for subsequent financial scandals and crises.

    USC Dornsife in the News Archive - 2015 December Wednesday, December 23, 2015 CBS News featured research presented by John Platt of USC Dornsife College to the American Geophysical Union that may explain mysterious fault lines. Platt said when two faults collide, they may merge like a zipper, instead of breaking past one another. "It may solve some long-standing and intractable problems concerning the timing and displacement on faults," he said. EdTech wrote about a $2.7 million U.S. Department of Education grant for a digital game project by Daphna Oyserman, Dean’s Professor of Psychology and professor of psychology, education and communication. Oyserman will work with the nonprofit McREL, game developer Filament Games, and the South Centeral Colorado Board of Cooperative Education Services to build and test the game based on Oyserman's "identity-based motivation" for teens. The Wall Street Journal ran an op-ed by Dan Schnur, director of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics, about Sen. Lindsey Graham's decision to end his presidential campaign. Tuesday, December 22, 2015 The Nation highlighted research by Manuel Pastor, Turpanjian Chair in Civil Society and Social Change and professor of sociology and American studies and ethnicity, and colleagues on the economic impact of Prop. 13 in California. If Prop. 13 was reformed so that commercial and industrial properties were taxed at market rate, the state could generate between $8.2-10.2 billion. Pastor noted that Prop. 13 affects younger Californians - who are predominantly non-white - more than older, more established residents. Daily Mail featured research by Margaret Gatz, professor of psychology, gerontology and preventive medicine, and Andrew Petkus, a postdoctoral researcher in psychology, along with colleagues finding that long-term anxiety can increase the risk for dementia.

Traces of Time. The Image of the Islamic Revolution, the Hero and Martyrdom in Persian Novels Written in Iran and in Exile. Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis. Studia Iranica Upsaliensia 28. 196 pp. Uppsala. ISBN 978-91-554-9577-0 The present study explores the image of the Islamic Revolution, the concept of the hero, and the concept of martyrdom as depicted in ten post-Revolutionary Persian novels written and published in Iran compared with ten post-Revolutionary Persian novels written and published in exile. The method is based on a comparative analysis of these two categories of novels. Roland Barthes’s structuralism will be used as the theoretical tool for the analysis of the novels. The comparative analysis of the two groups of novels will be carried out within the framework of Foucault’s theory of discourse. Since its emergence, the Persian novel has been a scene for the dialogue between the five main discourses in the history of Iran since the Constitutional Revolution; this dialogue, in turn, has taken place within the larger framework of the dialogue between modernity and traditionalism. The main conclusion to be drawn from the present study is that the establishment of the Islamic Republic has merely altered the makeup of the scene, while the primary dialogue between modernity and traditionalism continues unabated. This dialogue can be heard in the way the Islamic Republic, the hero, and martyrdom are portrayed in the twenty post-Revolutionary novels in this study.

    ANNUAL REPORT 2019 THE RAND CORPORATION IS A RESEARCH ORGANIZATION THAT DEVELOPS SOLUTIONS TO PUBLIC POLICY CHALLENGES TO HELP MAKE COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD SAFER AND MORE SECURE, HEALTHIER AND MORE PROSPEROUS. THE CAMPAIGN FOR RAND MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR AND THE PRESIDENT RAND’s mission—to help improve policy and decisionmaking through research and analysis—guides the topics we choose to tackle, our methodological approaches, and our outreach. This year, it also helped inspire RAND to launch its most ambitious fundraising campaign to date. Our campaign is focused on five priorities. Countering truth decay. “Truth decay” is the term we use to describe the diminishing role of facts and analysis in public life. As a nonpartisan institution that seeks to advance the public good through research and analysis, RAND is the only research institution that has already invested in an initiative to counter this grave, existential threat. Rethinking and retooling institutions. The 20th century saw the establishment of some of the world’s most strategic and beneficent organizations. RAND will help to design a revitalized set of institutions to promote security, stability, and prosperity for the century to come—institutions essential to the disciplined, long-term, consensus-driven, and coalition-building efforts on which clear, well-supported policy depends. Strengthening and safeguarding communities. In confronting global problems such as social and economic inequity, unsustainable cities, migration and displacement, and the health of an aging population, RAND understands the need to solve these problems where people are already experiencing them firsthand—in local communities. By working at the front lines of need, RAND can pilot and refine practical tools and approaches that others can deploy right away.

Friday, December 23, 2011 Los Angeles Times ran an op-ed by Janet Fitch of the Master of Professional Writing Program reflecting on her mother’s cooking during the holidays. Wired quoted David Bottjer of earth sciences and biological sciences about new research on fossils that may hint at how multi-cellular creatures first came into being. Smithsonian cited research by Kaspar Meyer of psychology, finding that when study subjects were shown silent film clips, the brain regions governing sound would light up. Thursday, December 22, 2011 The New York Times ran an op-ed by David Treuer of English about how American Indian identity has been exploited by both the U.S. government and tribal people themselves at various times in history. Racial mixing has led to complications in tribal identification as well as knowing who should receive reservation benefits, Treuer wrote. Ultimately, tribes need to use metrics beyond bloodlines to identify members. "Having survived this long and come this far, we must think harder about who we want to be in the future, and do something more than just measure out our teaspoons of blood," he wrote.

Dissertation Advisor: Françoise Massardier-Kenney This dissertation addresses the need to expand translation scholarship through the inclusion of research into different translation traditions and histories (D’hulst 2001: 5; Bandia 2006; Tymoczko 2006: 15; Baker 2009: 1); the importance of compiling bibliographies of translations in a variety of translation traditions (Pym 1998: 42; D’hulst 2010: 400); and the need for empirical studies on the functional aspects of (translation) paratexts (Genette 1997: 12–15). It provides a digital bibliography that documents what works of Persian literature were translated into English, by whom, where, and when, and explores how these translations were presented to Anglophone readers across three historical periods—1925–1941, 1942–1979, and 1980–2015— marked by important socio-political events in the contemporary history of Iran and the country’s shifting relations with the Anglophone West. Through a methodical search in the library of congress catalogued in OCLC WorldCat, a bibliographical database including 863 editions of Persian-English literary translations along with their relevant metadata—titles in Persian, authors, translators, publishers, and dates and places of publication—was compiled and, through a quantitative analysis of this bibliographical data over time, patterns of translation publication across the given periods
