Peterson One of the many quiet joys the priesthood has brought me is the access to people’s lives given to me out of their in- nate trust and love. In particular, we priests have the privilege of watching sons and daughters in families grow and ma- ture, marry and have children of their own. Shortly before this pandemic changed our lives, I was in the company of a faith-filled couple I first met as students when I was a college chaplain.

James Brown - Get on the Good Foot: a Dance Celebration October 25 10:29 2013 by Jermaine Rowe

BWW Reviews : James Brown - Get on the Good Foot: A Dance Celebration October 25 10:29 2013 by Jermaine Rowe "Give the people what they came for" James Brown said in reference to his shows, and it seemed that the Apollo set out to do just that on the opening night of "James Brown - Ge t on the Good Foot" dance celebration concert in Harlem. It was fitting that the concert opened with a welcome speech by Rev. Al Sharpton , given the historic relationship between the Apollo Theatre and James Brown . Sharpton reflected on his connection with Brown on the very stage that we were about to experience the evening's performance. The hour-long performance that followed showcased a variety of choreographers exploring the music of James Brown , danced by the Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO) and three (3) non-affiliated featured soloists. The show opened with a dynamic and exciting sound play with music and voice -overs of Brown that was effective in setting up the scene for the legacy that was being honored. The fault of the program, however, was that you ended up watching the first three choreographers before you realized that the show was not going to have breaks between each work. This made the flow seem unorganized and unclear. Despite this, "Too Funky," choreographed by Otis Sallid , saw a vibrant, young, and talented group of dancers let loose to the funky sounds of a well- arranged set of songs. The team did such a great job of setting up the excitement of the evening that I found myself a little disappointed by the lack of structure in Sallid's work.

A. Denton, Texas May, 1974 ABSTRACT mcClaran, Nancy Eubanks, Emily and the Child.: An Examination of the Child Image in the Work of Emily Dickinson. Master of Arts (English), May, 1974, 155 pp., 6 chapters, bibliography 115 titles. The primary sources for this study are Dickinson's poems and letters. The purpose is to examine child imagery in Dickinson's work, and the investigation is based on the chronological age of children in the images. Dickinson's small child exists in mystical communion with nature and deity. Inevitably the child is wrenched from this divine state by one of three estranging forces: adult society, death, or love. After the estrangement the state of childhood may be regained only after death, at which time the soul enters immortality as a small child. The study moreover contends that one aspect of Dickinson's seclusion was an endeavor to remain a child. TABLE OF CONTENTS Page Chapter I. INTRODUCTION . 1 II. INFANCY - .-- -. * . 21 III. Although that significance seemed apparent to critics almost from the moment the first volume of her poems was posthumously published in 1890, very little has been written on Dickinson's imagery.

This is the keynote or escapism in the English Romantic Movement as evidenced by Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Keats and Byron. The world had closed too tightly about man in the previous age. Therefore, there breaks forth around 1800 the reaction to the eon- ventionality, the formalism in lite, thought and feeling. It is under that aspect that approach to this thesis must be made.

It draws on my fieldwork in Noumea and Mare in the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia. The main part of the thesis looks at the interactions of this group of young people with other ethnic and social groups living in New Caledonia. These include the Kanaks, the “Caldoches” (native-born Caledonians of French origin), the “Metros” (immigrants from metropolitan France), Pacific islanders, Vietnamese and Indonesians. The thesis also includes a short section describing Mare itself and my fieldwork there. Particular attention is paid to the Kanaks and to the Caldoches, whose rural and urban lifestyles are compared and contrasted to those of the young people being studied.

  • CONFESSION: OLD TESTAMENT INSIGHTS1 by Clifford Rapp, Jr

CONFESSION: OLD TESTAMENT INSIGHTS1 by Clifford Rapp, Jr

Confession 1 CONFESSION: OLD TESTAMENT INSIGHTS1 by Clifford Rapp, Jr. The New Testament promises that if we confess our sins [God] is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).2 This essay ad- dresses the nature of confession. The paucity of New Testament material on confession makes this question difficult. A few confessions exist: the prodi- gal son (Luke 15), the tax collector’s confession (Luke 18), and Simon’s plea for mercy (Acts 8). Probably the longest and most detailed confessions of sin are Paul’s public testimonies in which he acknowledged his sin. The New Testament uses the homologeó, “confess,” word group (οϑµολογεϖω, οϑµολογιϖα, εϕξοµολογεϖω) only forty times. Furthermore, 1 John 1:9 is the only time where the direct object of homologeó is sins, iniquities, trans- gressions, debts, etc. Four times the related term exomologeó, is used of confessing sin, faults or evil practices (Matthew 3:6; Mark 1:5; Acts 19:18; and James 5:16). 1 [Editor’s note—Some long-term readers may remember that the CTS Journal 2 (Spring/ Summer 1996) contained an article by Clifford Rapp, Jr., defending one view of Ephesians 5:18, while Thomas Ice presented an alternative. Read- ers may examine both articles at the CTS Website: www.chafer.edu. Ephesians 5:18 and 1 John 1:9 are related, so CTS Journal invites inquiries and responses to this (and any other) article. Considering such issues allows iron to sharpen iron.] 2 Unless otherwise noted, all Scripture citations are taken from the New Ameri- can Standard Bible (NASB) copyright 1960, 1962, 1963, 1968, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1994 by the Lockman Foundation.
  • Division of the Self: Life After Death and the Binary Soul Doctrine

Division of the Self: Life After Death and the Binary Soul Doctrine

Division of the Self: Life After Death and the Binary Soul Doctrine Peter Novak LaPorte, IN ABSTRACT: Ancient Egyptians believed that each individual had two souls, a ba and a ka, which separated at death unless steps were taken to prevent this division. Egyptian descriptions of the ba and ka are strikingly similar to modern scientists' descriptions of the conscious and unconscious halves of the human psyche. Many other cultures all over the globe believed in two souls, one like the conscious, the other like the unconscious, which separated at death. Many cultures held that one soul would go on to reincarnate, while the other would become trapped in a dreamlike netherworld. Some believed that this division could be prevented or reversed, while others saw the division as being inevitable. The two stages of near-death experiences, a detached, objective, and dispassionate "black void" followed by a subjective, relationship-oriented, and emotionally intense "realm of light," reflect the distinctions between the conscious mind and the unconscious mind. The "darkness" stage seems to be experienced exclusively through the conscious half of the psyche, while the "light" stage seems to be experienced exclusively through the unconscious, as if the two were operating independently during these episodes. A similarly polarized dichotomy can be found in the accounts of reincarnation, of the Realm of Bewildered Souls, of the void between lives, of the behavior of ghosts and apparitions, and in statements about the afterlife by parapsychologists. The "Binary Soul Doctrine" hypothesis, that the two halves of the psyche separate after death, offers a consistent explanation for these afterlife phenomena.
