Family and Caregiver Education BEREAVEMENT Why do I feel guilty? Guilt often plays a part in normal grieving. It seems to surface as one “reviews” the sequence of events leading up to and including the death of a loved one. This review process is natural. In fact, it is part of the healing process. But as one reviews, alternative choices and responses become apparent in hindsight. That’s when guilt can rear its head. Actually, there have been nine types of guilt identified in relation to the grieving process: * Death Causation Guilt Can occur whether the person was actually directly responsible for the death, or not at all responsible. The perception of responsibility is the driving factor. Illness-Related Guilt Focuses on the time period prior to and including the illness of a person who has died. Examples include: not believing the person was ill, not noticing symptoms that led to the illness and the death, saying or doing something negative during the illness, being angry at the person for being ill, etc. Role Guilt A role is an expected set of behaviors. When a person we care about dies, guilt may emerge concerning, “what I should have done with, or for,” this person (in relation to our role as parent, spouse, etc.). If Only Guilt Stems from the belief that the bereaved survivor could have done something to change the course of the illness and/or death. Much of it falls into the category of Magical Thinking (doing something, or failing to do something, that any reasonable person would say had no relationship to the death; but nonetheless, the person feels responsible for the death in some way). -

About Emotions There are 8 primary emotions. You are born with these emotions wired into your brain. That wiring causes your body to react in certain ways and for you to have certain urges when the emotion arises. Here is a list of primary emotions: Eight Primary Emotions Anger: fury, outrage, wrath, irritability, hostility, resentment and violence. Sadness: grief, sorrow, gloom, melancholy, despair, loneliness, and depression. Fear: anxiety, apprehension, nervousness, dread, fright, and panic. Joy: enjoyment, happiness, relief, bliss, delight, pride, thrill, and ecstasy. Interest: acceptance, friendliness, trust, kindness, affection, love, and devotion. Surprise: shock, astonishment, amazement, astound, and wonder. Disgust: contempt, disdain, scorn, aversion, distaste, and revulsion. Shame: guilt, embarrassment, chagrin, remorse, regret, and contrition. All other emotions are made up by combining these basic 8 emotions. Sometimes we have secondary emotions, an emotional reaction to an emotion. We learn these. Some examples of these are: o Feeling shame when you get angry. o Feeling angry when you have a shame response (e.g., hurt feelings). o Feeling fear when you get angry (maybe you’ve been punished for anger). There are many more. These are NOT wired into our bodies and brains, but are learned from our families, our culture, and others. When you have a secondary emotion, the key is to figure out what the primary emotion, the feeling at the root of your reaction is, so that you can take an action that is most helpful. . -

However, although empathy is often thought to be automatic, recent theories have argued that there is a key role for motivation in modulating empathic experiences. Here we administered self-report measures of empathy and apathy-motivation to a large sample of healthy people (n = 378) to test whether people who are more empathic are also more motivated. We then sought to replicate our fndings in an independent sample (n = 198) that also completed a behavioural task to measure state afective empathy and emotion recognition. Cognitive empathy was associated with higher levels of motivation generally across behavioural, social and emotional domains. In contrast, afective empathy was associated with lower levels of behavioural motivation, but higher levels of emotional motivation. Factor analyses showed that empathy and apathy are distinct constructs, but that afective empathy and emotional motivation are underpinned by the same latent factor. These results have potentially important clinical applications for disorders associated with reduced empathy and motivation as well as the understanding of these processes in healthy people. Empathy – the capacity to understand and resonate with the experiences of other people – is considered essential for navigating meaningful social interactions and is closely linked to prosocial behaviour1–7. -

This study aims to investigate the relationship between coping mechanisms, dysfunctional negative emotions, and Internet use. A total of 54 participants aged between 14 and 19 years old completed a questionnaire containing several measures and demographics information. We measured participants’ coping strategies, emotional distress, social and emotional loneliness, and their online behavior and Internet addiction using self-report questionnaires. In order to identify the relation between the investigated variables, we used correlation analysis and regression, and we tested one mediation model. The results showed that maladaptive coping strategies and Internet use were significant predictors of dysfunctional negative emotions. Shamay-Tsoory Empathy describes an individual’s ability to understand and feel the other. In this article, we review recent theoretical approaches to the study of empathy. Recent evidence supports 2 possible empathy systems: an emotional system and a cognitive system. These processes are served by separate, albeit interacting, brain networks. When a cognitive empathic response is generated, the theory of mind (ToM) network (i.e., medial prefrontal cortex, superior temporal sulcus, temporal poles) and the affective ToM network (mainly involving the ventromedial prefrontal cortex) are typically involved. In contrast, the emotional empathic response is driven mainly by simulation and involves regions that mediate emotional experiences (i.e., amygdala, insula). A decreased empathic response may be due to deficits in mentalizing (cognitive ToM, affective ToM) or in simulation processing (emotional empathy), with these deficits mediated by different neural systems. It is proposed that a balanced activation of these 2 networks is required for appropriate social behavior. BWW Reviews : James Brown - Get on the Good Foot: A Dance Celebration October 25 10:29 2013 by Jermaine Rowe "Give the people what they came for" James Brown said in reference to his shows, and it seemed that the Apollo set out to do just that on the opening night of "James Brown - Ge t on the Good Foot" dance celebration concert in Harlem. It was fitting that the concert opened with a welcome speech by Rev. Al Sharpton , given the historic relationship between the Apollo Theatre and James Brown . Sharpton reflected on his connection with Brown on the very stage that we were about to experience the evening's performance. The hour-long performance that followed showcased a variety of choreographers exploring the music of James Brown , danced by the Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO) and three (3) non-affiliated featured soloists. The show opened with a dynamic and exciting sound play with music and voice -overs of Brown that was effective in setting up the scene for the legacy that was being honored. The fault of the program, however, was that you ended up watching the first three choreographers before you realized that the show was not going to have breaks between each work. This made the flow seem unorganized and unclear. Despite this, "Too Funky," choreographed by Otis Sallid , saw a vibrant, young, and talented group of dancers let loose to the funky sounds of a well- arranged set of songs. The team did such a great job of setting up the excitement of the evening that I found myself a little disappointed by the lack of structure in Sallid's work.
