A Journey to Other Worlds – Artifacts Journal - University of Missouri Page 1 of 5 University of Missouri A Journal of Undergraduate Writing A Journey to Other Worlds Daniel Miller Daniel Miller graduated from MU with a bachelor of English in May 2014, and he is a first-year masters’ student now in English at MU. His fiction has appeared in ZONE 3, Puerto del Sol, and Hobart, among other publications. He selected to write about this topic simply because he has always been fascinated with astral projection and lucid dreaming. He tried to achieve this state while researching and writing the paper. The astral body appears in many different cultures throughout time and throughout the world. In Egypt, the “KA was not the soul of man . but its vehicle” (Muldoon & Carrington, 2011, p. xxii). In the Qur’an, Muhammad’s astral body travels in the Isra and Mi’raj story. And, among other sacred and secular texts, the astral body appears in Hindu scripture, Taoist practice, and even Christianity. In his article regarding the afterlife, Woolger (2014) notes that “in such journeys in the world religions and innumerable tribal practices” scholars have “described a common pattern of ‘ascent’, which is to say an ecstatic, mystical or out-of body experience, wherein the spiritual traveler leaves the physical body and travels in his/her subtle body into ‘higher’ realms” (para. 4). Dually, this quotation makes apparent the historical depth of astral projection as well as uses specific terms—spiritual, mystical, and the idea of ‘higher’ realms—that separates astral projection from other types of out-of body experiences (OBEs). -

This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -

BWW Reviews : James Brown - Get on the Good Foot: A Dance Celebration October 25 10:29 2013 by Jermaine Rowe "Give the people what they came for" James Brown said in reference to his shows, and it seemed that the Apollo set out to do just that on the opening night of "James Brown - Ge t on the Good Foot" dance celebration concert in Harlem. It was fitting that the concert opened with a welcome speech by Rev. Al Sharpton , given the historic relationship between the Apollo Theatre and James Brown . Sharpton reflected on his connection with Brown on the very stage that we were about to experience the evening's performance. The hour-long performance that followed showcased a variety of choreographers exploring the music of James Brown , danced by the Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO) and three (3) non-affiliated featured soloists. The show opened with a dynamic and exciting sound play with music and voice -overs of Brown that was effective in setting up the scene for the legacy that was being honored. The fault of the program, however, was that you ended up watching the first three choreographers before you realized that the show was not going to have breaks between each work. This made the flow seem unorganized and unclear. Despite this, "Too Funky," choreographed by Otis Sallid , saw a vibrant, young, and talented group of dancers let loose to the funky sounds of a well- arranged set of songs. The team did such a great job of setting up the excitement of the evening that I found myself a little disappointed by the lack of structure in Sallid's work. -

A CHAIR BASED YOGA WORKSHOP FOR SELF-CARE AND STRESS MANAGEMENT FOR SOCIAL WORKERS AND MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS Abstract ABSTRACT This dissertation is a continuing education unit (CEU) course that teaches social workers and other mental health professionals how to cultivate resiliency and enhance self-care through the ancient practice of yoga. The course explores emerging research that reveals how yoga and other mindfulness-based practices can positively impact neurochemistry and brain biology. Most of the yoga positions and breathing exercises are practiced from a chair and can be adapted to any level of flexibility and fitness level. Designed to make yoga accessible for everyone, the techniques are gentle and available to individuals with various physical abilities, including participants who may be in a wheelchair. The program is experiential in nature but also includes power point slides and traditional classroom style instruction. -

The threads he referred to are the sutras of the legendary Indian philosopher or philosophers known to us as Patanjali; the rope is a popular meta- phor in Indian thought which represents escape from the world of delusion into the path to understanding and truth. For more than two thousand years, the strands or threads of the 196 sutras--a mala (rosary or necklace) of succinct idea-seeds which inspire rather than embody philosophical development--have provided the raw mate- rial for yogic thinkers to weave philosophical fabrics of great diversity. Thinkers within the Yoga system have used the sutras as a point of departure to develop philosophies as disparate as the so-called “scientifi c Yoga” of Sri Yukteswar in the 19th century (which presaged the contemporary fascination with correlations between East- ern mysticism and quantum physics) to the teachings of the contemporary yogi, B.K.S. -

An Introduction to the Doctrines of Soul and Enlightenment in Mahayana Buddhism and the Baha'i Faith Yeo Yew Hock Abstract This article examines the development of Mahayana Buddhism, its spread to China and how the Chinese people adopted and adapted it. The Buddhist teachings on "nonself" and the "Enlightenment" are correlated with the Baha'i teachings on the soul. In particular, the journey of the soul described in Baha'u'Uah's Seven Valleys, which culminates in a state of "True Poverty and Absolute Nothingness" is likened to the Mahayana Sunyata (Tmptiness) of Nirvana. Parallels are drawn between the Baha'i "Valley of Unity" and Buddhist monism, both of which seek to go beyond all notions of duality. The central role played by the founders of the Baha'i Faith and Mahayana Buddhism on unlocking the spiritual potential of their respective followers is also compared. In both cases their teachings are best understood in terms of a way by which their followers can explore the expanses of their own hearts. Also, both in Mahayana Buddhism and the Baha'i Faith, there is an injunction to attain a balance between Wisdom and Compassion, between individual self-enlightenment and universal salvation. 36 THE SINGAPORE BAHÁÍ STUDIES REVIEW 1. A last act though which he wanted to give unity, through a rich symbolic substrate, to the space outside of nature and the space within his own mind. A unity he first met and fully understood when he joined Madame Blavatsky’s Theosophical Society in 1887. This essay aims to examine the influence theosophy on Yeats’s literary works, namely on A Vision and how theosophical methodologies of investigation helped him to discover and adopt a metaphysical approach in his own internalisa- tion and representation of material and spiritual realities. Leadbeater Chapter -1- WHAT CLAIRVOYANCE IS [Page 5] Clairvoyance means literally nothing more than "clear seeing", and it is a word which has been sorely misused, and even degraded so far as to be employed to describe the trickery of a mountebank in a variety show. Even in its more restricted sense it covers a wide range of phenomena, differing so greatly in character that it is not easy to give a definition of the word which shall be at once succinct and accurate. It has been called "spiritual vision", but no rendering could well be more misleading than that, for in the vast majority of cases there is no faculty connected with it which has the slightest claim to be honoured by so lofty a name. For the purpose of this treatise we may, perhaps, define it as the power to see what is hidden from ordinary physical sight. It will be as well to premise that it is very frequently ( though by no means always ) accompanied by what is called clairaudience, or the power to hear what would be inaudible to the ordinary physical [Page 6] ear; and we will for the nonce take our title as covering this faculty also, in order to avoid the clumsiness of perpetually using two long words where one will suffice.
